Purpose: U.S. NATIONAL TEAM QUALIFIER. Men’s and Women’s Open finalists earn positions on the team, and qualify for international competition through semi-annual “team trials.” Also encour- ages development of racquetball as a lifetime sport, with additional competitive age divisions offered in five-year increments between 19+ and 85+, plus skill division [A,B,C,D] playoffs. An overall “state team champion” is also named. Established: 1968 Frequency: Annual (In October, usually the first weekend) Entrants: 600 - 800 Eligibility: Entrants must be USRA members, and may earn seeding position by competing in a preliminary regional doubles event, but participation in such a qualifier is not required. In age division competition, players must meet the proper age requirement as of the first day of the tournament. Awards: Gold, Silver, Bronze, Consolation awards in all divisions, plus state team trophy. Judging: Competition conducted in single elimination championship rounds, with consolation bracket for first-round losers. INTRODUCTION Racquetball is a relatively new game which continues to grow in popularity. It can be played competitively or simply for fun and relaxation. HISTORY OF THE GAME Racquetball is an offshoot of the game of tennis. It’s tempting to make comparisons between the two sports but we have to be careful not to be misleading! According to many pros, excelling in one of the racquet sports does not necessarily guarantee top performance in another. Racquetball is a young sport, having originated in the United States in the 1950s. Although it is strenuous and physically challenging, it does not entail chasing balls all over a court. But like tennis, it does require both supe- rior physical dexterity as well as the ability to strategize quickly and effectively.
