  • University of Nevada, Reno the Development and Optimization of A
University of Nevada, Reno The Development and Optimization of a Teleoperated Four-Wheel Drive/Four-Wheel Steer Vehicle A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering by Travis D. Fields Dr. Eric L. Wang/Thesis Advisor December, 2009 i Abstract A teleoperated four wheel drive/four wheel steer vehicle was developed. The vehicle was designed according to no slip conditions in which the wheels maintained zero velocity relative to the ground in both longitudinal and latitudinal directions. The vehicle was controlled with an intuitive interface (steering wheel and pedal). Video and command information were sent between a command station and the vehicle via two amateur radio transceivers. An empirical approach for determining the optimal handling characteristics for a four wheel steering vehicle is described. A two dimensional optimization is performed using Powell’s method. The two parameters in question are the steering sensitivity gain and the gain to control instantaneous center of rotation coordinate Y (denoted y gain). Results concluded that the steering gain has a negligible effect on the handling characteristics while the y gain has a significant impact on the handling characteris- tics. It was also concluded that the main limitation in the testing method was the robustness of the test vehicle and the control software. To decrease experimental iterations a one dimensional optimization is recommended utilizing the speed and efficiency of the golden section search method. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank my advisor, Dr. Eric Wang for his invaluable guidance throughout this project. I know his mentoring style will prepare me for the road ahead.

  • VCO Enables a Hands-Free Car Kit for Cell Phones
Maxim > Design Support > Technical Documents > Application Notes > Wireless and RF > APP 5123 Keywords: VCO, transmitter, hands-free cell phone, FM radio, voltage controlled oscillator APPLICATION NOTE 5123 VCO Enables a Hands-Free Car Kit for Cell Phones By: Tom Au-Yeung, Director of Customer Applications Wilson Tang, Member of Technical Staff Mar 18, 2013 Abstract: This design idea presents an integrated IF voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) that can retransmit the audio signal from a cell phone to the FM broadcast band. By placing the cell phone's speaker near the microphone, the user can use the phone as a hands-free device while driving. The circuit in Figure 1 can retransmit the audio signal from a cell phone to the FM broadcast band. When the user places a cell phone speaker near the microphone, he or she can listen to the cell phone audio via the vehicle's FM radio. This can be used as an in-car hands-free speakerphone. Click here for an overview of the wireless components used in a typical radio transceiver. Figure 1. An FM transmitter circuit with microphone for use as a hands-free cell phone. IC1 is an integrated IF voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) with a differential output that supports a 70MHz to 150MHz frequency range, which covers the whole FM radio band. Inductor L1 sets the VCO's center tuning range. Select L1 such that the effective inductance from the IND pin to GND results in an output frequency of 100MHz.This frequency corresponds with the center of the FM band. An inductor value of 270nH covers a tuning 97MHz to 128MHz range.
