THE GREETING The of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you. There is one Body and one Spirit; There is one hope in God’s call to us. One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, one God and Father of all. Please sit

Baptism is the gift of our Lord Jesus Christ. When he had risen from the dead, Jesus commanded his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We have come together today to obey that command. Baptism with water signifies the cleansing from sin that Jesus’ death makes possible, and the new life that God gives us through the Holy Spirit. In baptism, the promises of God are visibly signed and sealed for us. We are joined to Christ, and made members of his body, the Church universal. In confirmation those who have been baptised come to receive the laying on of the ’s hand with prayer. We pray that those who are baptised and confirmed will be empowered by the Holy Spirit for the ministry and service to which God shall call them. So we welcome you, Ashleigh, Jimmy, Matthew, Matthew, Sze Mian, Samuel and Xin as you come to be baptised and confirmed and Rachel, AHua, Meng, MingZhe, Qing, QuanLing, Tian Yue and Xeverie as you come to be confirmed and Gillian as you come to be received into the Anglican Church. We give thanks for you, and pray that you may know God’s love and faithfulness for ever.

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION The saints were faithful unto death and now dwell in the heavenly kingdom for ever. As we celebrate their joy, let us bring to the Lord our sins and weaknesses, and ask for his mercy. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please stand to sing

3 THE HYMN OF PRAISE (GLORIA) Sung by all Please stand

Parish Eucharist – Michael Dudman (1938-94) THE COLLECT Let us pray. Living God, you made your Church to grow through the zeal, courage, and unflinching witness of your servants martyred in New Guinea: give to us and all your people such steadfast faith in your good purposes that we may serve faithfully wherever you have stationed us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD The people are seated for first reading.

THE READING: Romans 8.33-39 Read by Canon Chris Foley 33 Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written,

4 ‘For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.’ 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Hear the word of the Lord. thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Please stand The Lord be with you. And also with you The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St John: 12.20-32 Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ! 20 Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. 21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’ 22Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour. 27 ‘Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—“Father, save me from this hour”? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour.28Father, glorify your name.’ Then a voice came from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.’ 29The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, ‘An angel has spoken to him.’30Jesus answered, ‘This voice has come for your sake, not for mine.31Now is the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’ For the Gospel of the Lord: praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The people are seated at the invitation of the preacher.

THE SERMON The Very Revd Dr Andreas Loewe Dean

5 THE HYMN All are invited to follow the procession to the Baptistry.

THE BAPTISM, CONFIRMATION AND RECEPTION

THE CANDIDATES For Baptism & Confirmation For Confirmation Candidate for Reception Ashleigh Jane Ormerod Rachel Bowles Gillian Myfanwy Murray Jimmy Angus Hilton Meng Gai Matthew Neal Fallscheer Qing Gu Matthew Anthony Rigby MingZhe Li Sze Mian Lee Ahua Luo Samuel McKay Shaw Xeverie Swee Xin Chen Tian Yue Tang QuanLing Zhou

PRESENTATION OF THE CANDIDATES We welcome you who have come to be baptised and confirmed and I ask you now to introduce yourselves to the congregation. My name is Name. I ask to be baptised and confirmed. My name is Name. I ask to be confirmed.

6 THE DECISION The Archbishop says Before God and this congregation, I invite you to affirm that you turn to Christ and reject all that is evil, and so I ask: Do you turn to Christ? Candidates I turn to Christ. Do you repent of your sins? Candidates I repent of my sins. Do you reject selfish living, and all that is false and unjust? Candidates I reject them all. Do you renounce Satan and all evil? Candidates I renounce all that is evil. Almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness and lead you in the light of Christ to his everlasting Kingdom. Amen. Will you each, by God’s grace, strive to live as a disciple of Christ, loving God with your whole heart, and your neighbour as yourself, until your life’s end. Candidates I will, with God’s help. The Archbishop addresses the congregation You have heard these our brothers and sisters respond to Christ. Will you support them in this calling? All We will.

Let us pray. Grant, merciful God, that these persons may be so buried with Christ in baptism that the new nature may be raised up in them. May the fruit of your Spirit grow and flourish in them. Amen. May they know Christ’s forgiving love and continue in the fellowship and service of his Church. May they proclaim, by word and example, the good news of God in Christ. Amen.

THE BLESSING OF THE WATER The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; you nourish and sustain all living things. Thanks be to God.

7 We give you thanks that through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people out of slavery into freedom, and brought them through the river Jordan to new life in the land of promise. Thanks be to God.

We give you thanks for your Son Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing with the Holy Spirit. Thanks be to God.

We give you thanks that through the deep waters of death Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. Thanks be to God.

We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who forms us in the likeness of Christ and leads us to proclaim your kingdom. Thanks be to God.

And now we give you thanks that you have called these your servants to new birth into your church through the waters of baptism. Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that, being baptised in it, they may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection. May they die to sin, rise to newness of life, and continue for ever in Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we give you praise and honour, in the unity of the Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

I now ask you to affirm as yours the faith of the Church. The Congregation responds with the Candidates Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

8 THE BAPTISM The Baptising Priest says Name, I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Name, I sign you with the sign of the cross to show that you are marked as Christ’s own for ever. After all have been signed, the Baptising Priest addresses all the newly baptised Live as a disciple of Christ: fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. All Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory. The Priest continues God has called you into his Church. All We therefore receive and welcome you as a member with us of the body of Christ, as a child of the one heavenly Father, and as an inheritor of the kingdom of God.

THE CONFIRMATION The Candidates stand before the Archbishop, who prays for them: Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth. Blessed be the name of the Lord now, and for ever. Amen. Almighty and everliving God you have given your servants new birth by water and the Spirit, and have forgiven them their sins. Strengthen them, we pray, with the Holy Spirit that they may grow in grace. Increase in them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of discernment and inner strength, the spirit of knowledge and true godliness, and fill them with wonder and awe in your presence through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Archbishop lays hands on each candidate saying: Strengthen, Lord, your servant Name with your Holy Spirit. Empower and sustain him/her for your service. Amen. Anointing the newly confirmed person with the sign of the cross using the Oil of Chrism, the Archbishop says: Name, you are sealed with the Holy Spirit and marked as Christ’s own for ever. All candidates then receive a lighted candle. The Archbishop says: God has brought you out of darkness into his marvellous light. All Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father.

9 The Archbishop leads the congregation in praying: Defend, O Lord, these your servants with your heavenly grace, that they may continue yours for ever, and daily increase in your Holy Spirit more and more until they come to your everlasting kingdom. Amen.

THE RECEPTION The candidate is presented to the Archbishop, by the Precentor Gillian has already been baptised and has formerly been a communicant member of the Baptist Church. She now asks to be received into communicant membership of the Anglican Church of Australia and seeks our prayers in the fellowship of this Cathedral Church. The Archbishop says to Gillian Do you stand by the Christian confession and commitment made at your baptism? Gillian I do. Do you desire to be admitted into communicant membership of the Anglican Church of Australia and accept her doctrine and order? Gillian I do. The Archbishop welcomes Gillian in these words, taking her by the hand. Gillian, we recognise you as a baptised and communicant member of the Christian Church. All return to their seats in the nave and remain standing to sing
