  • Ticket Stubs Alone Have Little Value
Ticket stubs alone have little value Jeff Figler can be reached at [email protected]. He would be glad to give you his opinion on values of sports collectibles. BY JEFF FIGLER SPECIAL TO THE POST-DISPATCH 02/17/2010 Every so often I am asked if there is value to ticket stubs, or even unused full tickets. In short, the answer is no. The only instances in which ticket stubs or unused tickets are of value is if they are related to significant events, and only if they are auctioned with other related items. A ticket stub to, let's say a game in July 1962 has no value, except to the owner of the stub. (Maybe going to the game was a birthday gift.) However, a ticket stub to a game of historical significance, for example, Game 7 of the 1960 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates, would have some value. If you combine the ticket stub from that game, with a program from that game, newspaper clippings, and a team-signed ball of the 1960 Pirates, then you have a nice package, worth a minimum of $500. Of course, the value will depend on the condition of the items, especially of the baseball, and if there happened to be a bidding war on that lot. In case you might have forgotten, Game 7 of the 1960 World Series was the one in which statistically the Yankees dominated, but the Bucs won the Series on a walk-off homer by Bill Mazeroski. If someone has the entire unused ticket of a particular event, not merely the ticket stub, the value goes up a bit, but not dramatically.

  • Reign Men Taps Into a Compelling Oral History of Game 7 in the 2016 World Series
Reign Men taps into a compelling oral history of Game 7 in the 2016 World Series. Talking Cubs heads all top CSN Chicago producers need in riveting ‘Reign Men’ By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Thursday, March 23, 2017 Some of the most riveting TV can be a bunch of talking heads. The best example is enjoying multiple airings on CSN Chicago, the first at 9:30 p.m. Monday, March 27. When a one-hour documentary combines Theo Epstein and his Merry Men of Wrigley Field, who can talk as good a game as they play, with the video skills of world-class producers Sarah Lauch and Ryan McGuffey, you have a must-watch production. We all know “what” happened in the Game 7 Cubs victory of the 2016 World Series that turned from potentially the most catastrophic loss in franchise history into its most memorable triumph in just a few minutes in Cleveland. Now, thanks to the sublime re- porting and editing skills of Lauch and McGuffey, we now have the “how” and “why” through the oral history contained in “Reign Men: The Story Behind Game 7 of the 2016 World Series.” Anyone with sense is tired of the endless shots of the 35-and-under bar crowd whooping it up for top sports events. The word here is gratuitous. “Reign Men” largely eschews those images and other “color” shots in favor of telling the story. And what a tale to tell. Lauch and McGuffey, who have a combined 20 sports Emmy Awards in hand for their labors, could have simply done a rehash of what many term the greatest Game 7 in World Series history.

Atlanta Braves Clippings Wednesday, May 6, 2020 Braves.com Braves' Top 5 center fielders: Bowman's take By Mark Bowman No one loves a good debate quite like baseball fans, and with that in mind, we asked each of our beat reporters to rank the top five players by position in the history of their franchise, based on their career while playing for that club. These rankings are for fun and debate purposes only … if you don’t agree with the order, participate in the Twitter poll to vote for your favorite at this position. Here is Mark Bowman’s ranking of the top 5 center fielders in Braves history. Next week: Right fielders. 1. Andruw Jones, 1996-2007 Key fact: Stands with Roberto Clemente, Willie Mays and Ichiro Suzuki as the only outfielders to win 10 consecutive Gold Glove Awards The 60.9 bWAR (Baseball Reference’s WAR model) Andruw Jones produced during his 11 full seasons (1997-2007) with Atlanta ranked third in the Majors, trailing only Alex Rodriguez (85.7) and Barry Bonds (79.2). Chipper Jones was fourth at 58.9. Within this span, the Braves center fielder led all Major Leaguers with a 26.7 Defensive bWAR. Hall of Fame catcher Ivan Rodriguez ranked second with 16.5. The next closest outfielder was Mike Cameron (9.6). Along with establishing himself as one of the greatest defensive outfielders baseball has ever seen during his time with Atlanta, Jones became one of the best power hitters in Braves history. He ranks fourth in franchise history with 368 homers, and he set the club’s single-season record with 51 homers in 2005.

  • Indians Add Delabar, Banwart to Spring Camp by Jordan
Indians add Delabar, Banwart to spring camp By Jordan Bastian / MLB.com | @MLBastian | January 13th, 2017 + 10 COMMENTS CLEVELAND -- The Indians added a pair of arms to the Spring Training mix on Friday, signing right-handers Steve Delabar and Travis Banwart to Minor League contracts that include invitations to attend camp with the Major League club. Indians pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to Spring Training at the team's headquarters in Goodyear, Ariz., on Feb. 12, with the first workout slated for Feb. 14. Delabar and Banwart represent the first pitchers added to the spring fold as non-roster players. Cleveland currently has seven non-roster invitees, along with its 40-man roster. Catchers Erik Kratz and Guillermo Quiroz, first baseman Chris Colabello, utilityman Michael Martinez and outfielder Daniel Robertson are also on the Indians' list of non-roster players who will be on hand this spring. Cleveland has yet to announce its non-roster invitees from within the club's farm system. Delabar, 33, has spent parts of six seasons in the Majors and was an American League All-Star in 2013 with the Blue Jays. That season, the right-hander turned in a 3.22 ERA and had 82 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings. Last year, Delabar split his time between Triple-A Louisville (2.62 ERA in 17 games) and Cincinnati (seven games) before being granted his release at the end of June. He has had stints with the Mariners, Blue Jays and Reds in his career. Banwart, 30, was in the Indians' system in 2014 but then went on to play in parts of three seasons in the Korean Baseball League.
