LEADING THE WAY

FROM THE DIRECTOR & BOARD CHAIR We are proud to share Clark Planetarium’s 2018 Community Update with you. Here you will find information about our new Community Education Outreach program as well as stories of the planetarium’s impact on Utah public schools, the innovative partnerships and events we hosted, and a look forward to the year ahead. We love to host visitors in our facility and take pride in what we offer – 2018 was a tremendous year for us in both earned income and attendance. It is also increasingly important for us to deliver our mission outside of our building by getting out into the community. Clark Planetarium’s new Community Education Outreach program reached 30,000 residents throughout Salt Lake County and beyond, and continues to strengthen partnerships and build new ones to reach a broader audience base. Last year we received a federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to provide a robotics program for teens in all 18 Salt Lake County Library branches. The program launched in 2019 and has been a great success so far. We are deeply grateful to those who help us fulfill our mission of inspiring wonder and learning about space and science. We have proudly fulfilled this mission and served as a valuable and unique educational resource since 1965. With your support we will continue to be integral to the educational and cultural fabric of our community for decades to come. Finally, it is important to gratefully acknowledge our outstanding staff for their work in 2018, Salt Lake County for its steadfast support and guidance, and our Board of Directors for their invaluable service and commitment, especially Tom Beckett who completed his term as Board Chair last year. We look forward to a variety of successes in 2019, and please be sure to join us from July 16 - 20 for a week- long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing on the Moon. Here’s looking to a wonderful year in 2019! Yours in science,

Seth Jarvis Rees L. Petersen Director, Clark Planetarium Board Chair, Clark Planetarium Advisory Board

NEW EVENTS + NEW PARTNERS = MORE EDUCATIONAL FUN

HONORING WOMEN IN ENGINEERING: INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY DESPITE GAINS IN RECENT YEARS, WOMEN REMAIN UNDERREPRESENTED IN THE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING WORKFORCE – ONLY 13 PERCENT OF ENGINEERS WORKING IN THE FIELD ARE WOMEN. In partnership with L3 Technologies and the Girl Scouts of Utah, Clark Planetarium hosted an event dedicated to supporting girls and women in STEM. Former NASA administrator Gretchen McClain spoke about overcoming challenges and believing in oneself. Her talk was followed by the documentary Science Fair, which chronicles the journey of nine high school students on their quest to win the International Science and Engineering Fair. The event was so well-received that we plan to host a similar event every year, as well as grow our female-focused programming. 7

SUMMER LECTURE SERIES IT’S NOT JUST KIDS THAT NEED EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT OVER THE SUMMER MONTHS! Clark Planetarium was excited to host a trio of free and engaging lectures for our inaugural Summer Lecture Series. The series explored topics ranging from climate change to deep space. Yale professor Robert Mendelsohn, PhD, kicked off the series with a presentation exploring the economic costs of climate change. Our second lecture, given by Jason Steffen, PhD, focused on exoplanets and NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Dr. Steffen has been a part of NASA’s Kepler mission since 2008 and is now working on data from the TESS mission. Our final lecture was given by University of Utah professor Anil Seth, PhD. Dr. Seth discussed how astronomers find black holes. His work has focused on the massive black holes at the center of galaxies much smaller than our own galaxy. Watch for information about our 2019 Summer Lecture Series and ensure that your learning never ends!

ILLUMINATE FESTIVAL WE ASKED THE QUESTION, WHAT MORE CAN WE DO WITH OUR THEATRE SPACE? We had an idea to bring live art performances into the Hansen Dome Theatre and our friends at the Utah Arts Alliance helped us bring this idea to life. Our participation in the Illuminate Festival was a first and it was even more successful than we had anticipated. Working with local band Conquer Monster, Clark Planetarium’s production and dome teams led the creative process to transform the band’s own visual artwork for display on the dome. This visual work complemented the band’s live performance to create a unique and immersive music experience. The live performances were featured as part of the Illuminate Festival and both performances were sell outs. This experience has inspired us to continue to look for ways to partner with artists to bring one-of-a-kind experiences to Clark Planetarium. 8 2018 9 20181818 10

INSPIRING IMAGINATION NEW EXHIBITS DEVELOPED BY OUR IN-HOUSE TEAM INTERACTIVE EXHIBITS BEGINNING IN CLOUDS OF DUST AND GAS, STARS ARE BORN AND EVENTUALLY, THESE STARS DIE. THE DEATH OF A MASSIVE STAR IS DRAMATIC, WITH ITS CORE COLLAPSING INTO A NEUTRON STAR OR A BLACK HOLE AND BLASTING OFF ITS OUTER LAYERS INTO SPACE AS A BRILLIANT SUPERNOVA. STELLAR PLAYGROUND Clark Planetarium’s Stellar Playground exhibit allows visitors to learn about the life cycle of stars. This hands-on digital exhibit encourages visitors to experiment with mass and gravity to create a stellar death scenario that produces LANDER pulsars, neutron stars, or black holes. Stellar playground is just one of the many new exhibits that we introduced in 2018. All of our exhibits are designed to be hands-on, invite experimentation, and create a shared experience SOLAR SYSTEM among visitors. In 2019, we are looking forward EXPLORER to unveiling additional new exhibits that inspire wonder and learning about space and science.

IN-HOUSE PRODUCTION TEAM The Clark Planetarium Production Team is carrying on the decades-long tradition of Hansen Planetarium by creating and distributing cutting-edge digital content for planetaria worldwide. We currently have star shows playing in over 52 countries across the globe. We are proud to engage audiences of all ages and nationailites in discovering and learning about space and science. What a way to put your mark on the world Clark Planetarium!

THE EDGE THE NEWEST CLARK PLANETARIUM PRODUCTION Now that the New Horizons mission is returning data from Ultima Thule, our animators are working to produce a realistic model of the object for use in our newest show, The Edge. The Edge features findings from the farthest realm in our solar system and will be the most up-to-date show on that subject. We have also designed the show to be modular—it can be played in its entirety or it can be separated into segments with pauses for discussion or educational activities. These individual modules of the show can be updated as astronomers discover more information about the third realm of the solar system. Written for general audiences, The Edge is a gentle introduction to Pluto, Charon, the Kuiper Belt and the objects that reside there, the Oort Cloud, and comets. Look for The Edge to arrive in our Hansen Dome Theatre by early 2020. 12 LAUNCHING A LEGACY

LAUNCHING A LEGACY GALA FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2018 We love it when the Planetarium is all decked out for a party and the building was humming with excitement for our 2018 annual gala. Guests enjoyed delicious food, drinks, and exclusive auction items all while wandering among our interactive exhibits. The capstone of the evening was keynote speaker Emily Calandrelli. In addition to holding an M.S. degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics as well an M.S. degree in Technology and Policy from MIT, Emily is an Emmy-nominated television host and producer of Fox’s Xploration Outer Space and a featured correspondent on the Netflix series Bill Nye Saves the World. LOOKING AHEAD WHILE HONORING THE PAST

THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE APOLLO MOON LANDING ON JULY 20, 1969, AMERICAN ASTRONAUTS NEIL ARMSTRONG AND EDWIN “BUZZ” ALDRIN WERE THE FIRST HUMANS TO SET FOOT ON THE MOON. To honor the 50th anniversary of this achievement in space exploration and human ingenuity, Clark Planetarium will host a From Launch to Landing celebration, July 16 through July 20. These 5 days honor the span of time from the launch of the Apollo 11 mission to touchdown on the Moon four days later. The events are designed to engage our community and inspire wonder and learning about not just past achievements but also the future of scientific discovery and space exploration. As a highlight of our five day celebration, Clark Planetarium is partnering with Hill Aerospace Museum and KUED to bring Jessica Vos, a trained systems engineer at NASA, to Clark Planetarium for a special engagement presentation. Jessica has planned and executed multiple flight hardware projects as well as large-scale integrated human-in-the-loop tests, advancing through multiple positions encompassing the development of human space flight system technologies and human research studies. Be sure to keep in touch with us to learn more about this exciting celebration. Visit https://slco.org/clark- planetarium/events/ 14

A HIGHER LEVEL OF IMPACT

There’s more to being a member of Clark Planetarium than great experiences and benefits. Membership supports our organization and our mission. A Sustaining Membership supports Clark Planetarium at a higher level financially, ensuring that membership dollars go further and that we serve our community with educational and inspiring programming. Our Sustaining Members enjoy unique events and opportunities. Along with all the benefits of a regular membership, Sustaining Members get to experience our mission at a deeper level. In 2019, we are looking forward to kicking off two new exclusive events for our Sustaining Members:

Apollo 11 Pre-Launch Party: An evening hosted by Clark Planetarium Board Chair Rees Petersen featuring food, star/moon gazing and a chance to hold a piece of the Moon. This special pre-celebration of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing is exclusive to our sustainers. This event is scheduled for June 29th.

Cosmic Kids Event: This family-friendly event will take place in September and will feature a sneak peek at our newest Clark Planetarium star show. Our animators will not only walk us through how we make a feature- length animated star show, but we’ll have hands-on activities to help cultivate the creativity in your kids (and you!). Friends and family of our Sustaining Members will be invited to join us for this special event. UPGRADE TO A SUSTAINING MEMBER TODAY. CONTACT JOSEPH DANE AT [email protected] OR 385-468-1242.

SUSTAINING MEMBER HIGHLIGHT “I served on the Clark Planetarium Board of Directors for more than 10 years, and I am also a founding member of the Sustaining Member club. Supporting Clark Planetarium at a higher financial level as a Sustaining Member just makes sense to me – I want to help ensure that the Planetarium serves our students and our residents with programming that inspires wonder about space and science. Every year the Planetarium reaches roughly 100,000 students and I like knowing that I’m a part of that work.” – Sterling Poulson 15
