The 2002 college baseball season has officially begun. While most of the schools do not open play until Feb. 1, 2002, there are some that have already opened their seasons entering the final week of January. The 2002 college baseball season promises to be one of the most exciting seasons in memory. Can Miami make it three in a row at Rosenblatt Stadium? The defending champs return a number of key players and will play one of the nation's most demanding schedules. How will baseball at Alex Box Stadium differ now that legendary Skip Bertman is no longer in the first base dugout? New Tigers skipper Ray "Smoke" Laval opened practice on Saturday, Jan. 19, and is the favorite to win the SEC in a vote by the league's 12 head coaches. Can Nebraska claim its third straight 50-win season and turn Rosenblatt Stadium into another sea of red at the 2003 College World Series? Will Stanford journey back to America's heartland again this season, boasting another talented team under Mark Marquess? Who will be the eight teams to fight for the 2003 national championship in June? All of these questions will be answered over the course of the next 21 weeks as the college baseball season unfolds. It promises to be an exciting year. Off the field, there is excitement, too. There will be a trip to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum this year as the annual CoSIDA convention will be held in Rochester, N.Y.

    RELEASE: Jan. 7, 2002 STAVISKY AND SOLLMANN NAMED TO BASEBALL AMERICA PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA TEAM Notre Dame one of eight schools with multiple players on the elite preseason list. Notre Dame is one of eight teams in the nation to place multiple players on Baseball America’s list of 2002 preseason All-Americans, as junior leftfielder Brian Stavisky (Port Allegany, Pa.) has been named to the elite 12-player first team while second baseman Steve Sollmann (Cincinnati, Ohio) is a third-team selection and one of just eight sophomores among BA’s 42 preseason All-Americans (no freshmen were named to the team). The selections are based on input from scouting directors of Major League baseball teams, recognizing performance, talent and Major League potential. Stavisky is the only repeat selection on BA’s preseason first team All-America team and received more support than any other outfielder during the evaluation process. Three Notre Dame players now have received preseason All-America honors, as senior centerfielder Steve Stanley (Arlington Heights, Ohio)–who was married in Columbus on Saturday, Jan. 5, the same day his former Irish teammate Jeff Wagner was being married at Notre Dame’s Sacred Heat Basilica–was named a first team preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball magazine (Sollmann also was a third- team pick on the CB list). The BIG EAST Conference placed five players on the BA preseason All-America list, trailing only the Pacific-10 and the Atlantic Coast for the most selections from the same conference (the Big-12, with three, was the only other conference with more than two).

Southern University second baseman and 2002 NCAA batting leader (.495) Rickie Weeks returns after earning first team All-America laurels from the NCBWA on its 2002 postseason honors’ squad. Richmond outfielder Vito Chiaravallotti is the leading home run producer on the 2003 preseason first unit with 23 while Conference USA stalwarts DH Darryl Lawhorn (.416-19 HR-64 RBI) of East Carolina and utility athlete Michael Aubrey (.315-7 HR-56 RBI, 8-1 pitching record) of Tulane join the solid group. Street (four saves in four appearances in the NCAA World Series) and Simmons (2-0 in the CWS) had a hand in 34 of the 57 wins (57-15) by NCAA champion Texas last season while the starting pitchers on the first team, including Houston’s Brad Sullivan (nation-leading 157 strikeouts) and Wake Forest’s Kyle Sleeth (14-0), combined for a 58-5 pitching mark in ’02.

    NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS ASSOCIATION (June 10, 2003) ncbwa.com Contact: Bo Carter (214-742-1212) or Rob Carolla (401-453-0660) NCBWA ANNOUNCES 2003 DIVISION I ALL-AMERICA TEAMS PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced its 13th annual 2003 All-America Division I baseball teams on Tuesday. The three-unit squads definitely are the cream of the DI crop and have solid representation among NCAA World Series teams. They also reflect some good prognostication by the baseball writers in their 2003 preseason All-America choices. 2003 Dick Howser Trophy finalist Rickie Weeks of Southern heads an all-star cast of .400-plus hitters, standout pitchers, and CWS participants on the NCBWA postseason All-America grouping. The Southwestern Athletic Conference’s Player of the Year in both 2002 and ’03 capped his junior season with a .479 batting average to lead the nation for the second year in succession, hitting 16 homers and driving in 64 runs—good for 11th place nationally with 1.29 RBI per game. In his final two seasons as SU, the second-overall MLB draft selection (Milwaukee Brewers) smashed 36 home runs and drove in 160 runs (including 96 in 2002) during a 107-game span. Weeks is not alone in his stunning stats, though, as first team All-America pitcher Jeff Niemann of Rice leads the nation with a 16-0 record and fellow NCAA World Series participant David Marchbanks of South Carolina was 15-2 overall prior to his Omaha trek. Long Beach State’s Jered Weaver, brother of New York Yankees’ hurler Jeff Weaver, also notched a 14-4 record with a school-season-record 144 strikeouts.

    Kipnis' slam powers Tribe, Lowe to victory By Justin Albers / MLB.com | 6/1/2012 11:50 PM ET CLEVELAND -- The Indians desperately needed somebody -- anybody -- to solidify the starting rotation and give them a quality start. Once again, it was Derek Lowe to the rescue. Pitching on his 39th birthday, Lowe took a two-hit shutout into the seventh inning and helped the Indians to a 7-1 win against the Twins in the first game of a three-game series Friday night at Progressive Field. It was Lowe's team-leading seventh win of the season, a year after going 9- 17 for Atlanta. Lowe, who was rocked for eight runs in 2 1/3 innings last Saturday in Chicago, knew he had to quickly put the bad outing behind him and move on. Everybody in the rotation had been hit hard their last time around. To dwell on the past, Lowe said, would set him up for future failure. "There was no panic," Lowe said. "In years past, I would have probably tried to look back too much at the last game. You just understand that, don't try and watch video to figure it out. Just admit that you did bad." Lowe got plenty of help from his offense -- which produced seven runs in the first four innings -- but he gave the Indians a chance by keeping the Twins off the board early. Once the Cleveland bats started coming around with a Lonnie Chisenhall two-run home run in the second inning, Lowe's job became a lot easier.
