Working in partnership with the UK’s Visual Arts Alliance (VAA) and London Art School Alliance (LASA) to galvanise the sector in their united response, the CVAN’s open letter emphasises that art is essential to the growth of the country.

But Benton End became both their home and the new premises of the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing which, in 1937, they had founded together in Dedham, Essex. From 1940 until Lett Haines died in 1978 and Cedric Morris in 1982, Benton End was an exotic world apart where art, literature, good food, gardening and lively conversation combined to produce an extraordinarily stimulating environment for amateurs and professionals alike.

    Press Release 19 January 2017 ECVAN successful in ACE Ambition for Excellence bid for New Geographies of the East project The East Contemporary Visual Arts Network (ECVAN) is pleased to announce an application to Arts Council England’s Ambition for Excellence strategic fund has been successful. Receiving a grant of £600,000 over three years will enable ECVAN to deliver a new project: New Geographies of the East. New Geographies of the East is an ambitious programme that will deliver 10 major site- specific visual arts commissions, developed with and for communities in the East of England and with international partners from the Netherlands. The programme will be accompanied by an extensive community engagement programme and an artist and curator development initiative. The project will develop new audiences for contemporary visual art whilst strengthening and deepening relationships between artists and curators in the East of England and the Netherlands. Nine lead partners from ECVAN will collaborate with three partners in the Netherlands; The Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Casco: Office for Art, Design and Theory and If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want to be Part of Your Revolution. They will work alongside a host of additional local partners including Great Yarmouth Borough Council, Vivacity Peterborough and CPP Marketplace, Fenlands & Forest Heath to name a few. It was also a social hub: in the kitchen, Lett-Haines’ cousin, the food writer Elizabeth David, could be found at the stove, childrens’ author Kathleen Hale handed around platters – and, yes, the marmalade cat of her sto- ries looked on – while Lett-Haines mixed martinis and told stories of tiffs with Hemingway in 1920s Paris. To Blythe, then a shy young librar- ian, the atmosphere was “out of this world so far as I had previously tasted it. The generous ghosts at Rough and ready and fine mannered. I began in bright sunshine but soon it was gloomy and raining - yet again. The Wellington Weekly has a correspondent who reports monthly on the weather we have experienced during the month. He recorded that we had only one 24 hour period during the whole of December, when there was no rain. No wonder that there are twenty five square miles of flooded land on the Levels. I remember calling February the month of “full dyke”. One dreads what the land will be like when the floods finally drain away. I notice that Mary Keen writes in “The Garden” how much there is, of quality, to be seen in the garden in what is often regarded as the dead period. It set me off recall- ing what I have in my small mid-terrace garden.

Her mother had been trying to locate plants that had been bred by Michael Foster. Lucy’s interest was sparked. Among the Trees (4 March – 17 May 2020) brings together artworks that reflect on our multifaceted relationships with trees and forests and celebrates the tree’s enduring resonance as a source of inspiration for some of the most significant contemporary artists of our time, including Robert Adams , Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Tacita Dean, Peter Doig , Anya Gallaccio, Giuseppe Penone , Robert Smithson , and Pascale Marthine Tayou . Featuring the work of 15 international artists, Reverb: Sound into Art (24 June – 6 September 2020) invites visitors to experience sound in an immersive multi-sensory way with a number of newly commissioned installations that respond to Hayward Gallery's uniquely volumetric architecture.
