Ausstellungen, Präsentationen und Veranstaltungen beleuchten die Vielfalt des Themas Garten zwischen Kunstprojekten und Gemeinschaftsgärten. www.chelseafringe.com | www.chelseafringe.com/vienna-is-blumen-marvellous/ Gegründet wurde die Chelsea Fringe 2012 als Ergänzung zur Londoner „Chelsea Flower Show“, der weltweit berühmtesten Messe für Blumen und Gärten. Im Gegensatz zu ihr verfolgt die Chelsea Fringe keine kommerziellen Interessen, sondern erklärt einfach die Stadt zur offenen Bühne für Projekte und Initiativen im Garten-Kontext: vom Gemeinschaftsgarten bis zur Gartenkunst, © Bertram Weisshaar von Guerilla-Gardening über Installationen und Happenings, Spaziergänge, und Pflanzentauschbörsen, Pop-up Gartenstores und Gartenmodeschauen, Gespräche, Essen, Tage der offenen (Garten)Tür, bis hin zu Ausstellungen und Performances. Wer auch immer eine Veranstaltung, Präsentationen oder einfach ein „open door“ anbot, war 2012 automatisch Teil des Festivals. Über hundert Veranstaltungen brachten London zum Blühen und sorgten für einen fulminanten Auftakterfolg der Chelsea Fringe. Binnen eines Jahres ist das Konzept auch in anderen Städten angekommen. Die Chelsea Fringe 2013 ereignet sich von 18. Mai bis 9. Juni nicht nur in London, sondern auch in Bristol, Brighton – und in Wien. Fringe-Spirit für Wiener Gartenvielfalt Letzteres ist vor allem der Wiener Künstlerin Hannah Stippl, Assistentin der Abteilung für Land- schaftsdesign an der Wiener Angewandten, zu verdanken. 2012 war sie in ein künstlerisches Projekt der Chelsea Fringe eingebunden, 2013 etabliert sie Wien als ersten Festival-Außenposten auf dem europäischen Festland. „Wien verdient den Spirit der Chelsea Fringe. Denn kaum eine Stadt verfügt über eine derartige Vielfalt an Gärten, vom Schrebergarten bis zum Community-Garten, vom begrün- ten Innenhof bis zum Stadtpark oder dem Schönbrunner Schlosspark. Mein Ziel ist es, die unter- schiedlichsten Projekte sowie die involvierten Personen einander näher zu bringen: von Guerilla- Gärtnern bis zu Gartengestaltern. Juni 1936 öffnet im Museum of Modern Art in New York eine Ausstellung von Edward Steichen. Ihr Inhalt ist unge- wöhnlich, handelt es sich doch um Blumen: in jahrelanger Arbeit gezüchtete neue Sor- ten von Delphinium/Rittersporn. Für seine fotografischen Arbeiten weltbekannt, war Steichen der erste Künstler, der neue Orga- nismen schuf und diese als Kunst ausstell- te. Heute werden Steichens fotografische Arbeiten zu Höchstpreisen am Kunstmarkt gehandelt, seine Züchtung Delphinium ‘Connecticut Yankee’ dagegen kann man um wenig Geld im Gartencenter erwerben, ohne Namensnennung des Künstlers. U. / Martin Lengauer +43 699 100 88 057 | +43 1 216 48 44 23 | [email protected] | www.diejungs.at Ausgehend von dieser historischen Vorgeschichte wird die künstlerische Arbeit mit Pflanzen – als Material und Kunstwerke eigenen Ranges – ins thematische Zentrum zweier parallel laufender Ausstellungen gestellt. Die Züchtung von Pflanzen hat eine überaus lange Geschichte, die wenig bekannt ist. Noch weniger bekannt ist ihre Geschichte als die einer künstlerischen Disziplin. Doch Edward Steichen ist weder erste, noch der einzige Künstler, der sich mit der Züchtung von Pflanzen beschäftigt: Claude Monet züchtet Dahlien, Cedric Morris Iris und Mohn. Viele dieser Werke sind heute verloren. Das Thema betreibt keine eskapistische Abkehr von aktuellen sozialen oder umweltpolitischen Themen, sondern greift mit Fragen nach Natürlichkeit oder Künstlichkeit, nach der Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Natur, nach Märkten und Umwelt aktuelle Probleme jenseits ihrer oberflächlichen Verniedlichung auf. Blumen sind ein globales Handelsgut, produziert von Millionenindustrien, die hoch verderbliche Güter vertreiben, meist ohne Rücksicht auf Arbeits- oder Umweltbedingungen der Erzeugerländer. Weit entfernt von der idyllischen Einheit des menschlichen Lebens mit dem Ort, der Natur oder ihrem zyklischen Zeitrhythmus werden persönliche, politische und gesellschaftliche Denk- und Handlungsmöglichkeiten dargestellt. Die Ausstellungen in der IG Bildende Kunst und im Kalthaus des Botanischen Gartens der Universität Wien stellen in Disziplinen übergreifender Zusammenarbeit von Kunst, Wissenschaft und Garten historische Positionen zeitgenössischen Ansätzen gegenüber. Die Ausstellungen überschneiden, ergänzen, erweitern einander, sie eröffnen Neuland: für die Kunst ebenso wie für Blumenliebhaber und Interessierte. Teilnehmende KünstlerInnen Montagu C. Allwood (GB), Jyll Bradley (GB), Luther Burbank (USA), Elisabeth Falkinger (A), Karl Foerster (D), George Gessert (USA), Eduardo Kac (USA), Tony Heywood & Alison Condie (GB), Verena Holzgethan & Paul Neuninger (I/A), Cedric Morris (GB), Clemens Schneider (A), Edward Steichen (USA), Anita Duller & Hannah Stippl / The Flowerbeds (A) und viele weitere. Jyll Bradleys breit gefächerte künstlerische Praxis umfasst Fotografie, Installation und Kunst im öffentlichen Raum. In ihren Arbeiten ist sie stets politisch, mit einer poetischen Sensibilität für die individuelle Identität des Ortes. Ihre Fotoserie „Portraits with Flowers" stellt die ambivalente Beziehung von Pflanzen und den mit ihnen arbeitenden Menschen in den Mittelpunkt der Aufmerksamkeit, als Vehikel der Befragung gegenwärtiger Lebens- und Überlebensbedingungen. George Gessert konzentriert sich in seiner Arbeit auf die Schnittmengen von Kunst und Genetik. In „Genealogien" dokumentiert er seine Züchtungen, selektiert entlang ästhetischer. Lange vor den Diskussionen um Gentechnik und ihre Auswirkungen veränderten Menschen Lebewesen durch Domestizierung und Züchtung – wo können hier noch Grenzen zwischen Natürlichkeit und Künstlichkeit gezogen werden, und wie beeinflussen ästhetische Vorlieben die Evolution? Eduardo Kac ist bekannt für seine radikalen Untersuchungen der philosophischen und politischen Dimensionen Kommunikationsprozessen. Er arbeitet mit Computer, Video, Robotertechnik und biologischen Systemen. Mit „Natural History Of The Enigma" präsentiert er eine von ihm geschaffene transgene Lebensform: „Edunia“. Durch molekularbiologische Kombination von DNA des Künstlers und einer Petunie entsteht ein „plantimal", eine Mischung aus Mensch und Pflanze, die nicht in der Natur vorkommt. Tony Heywood & Alison Condie setzen sich in ihren Pflanzenstudien mit Begriffen wie natürlich und künstlich, Chaos und Ordnung auseinander, und hinterfragen damit ebenso wissenschaftliche wie künstlerische Methoden. Ihre künstlerische Praxis verbindet oft Genres wie Land Art, Bildhauerei, Malerei, Video und Performance. Die Serie der „Video Paint Pours" beruht auf präzisen Farbstudien verschiedener Blumen, die durch eine Choreographie von Farbgüssen, filmisch portraitiert werden. Verena Holzgethan & Paul Neuninger untersuchen Strategien von Pionierpflanzengesellschaften, also Pflanzen, die Katastrophen, menschliche Störungen etablierter Pflanzengemeinschaften als essentiellen Überlebensfaktor nützen. Sie sind fasziniert von der Bewegung von Pflanzen in Raum und Zeit. Jahrhunderts, weit weniger bekannt ist seine künstlerische Arbeit mit Pflanzen, vor allem Rittersporn. 1965 präsentiert Steichen eine völlig neue Art von buschförmigem Delphinium, die er nach einem Roman Mark Twains benennt. Delphinium 'Connecticut Yankee’ ist die einzige noch erhaltene Züchtung Steichens.

It was also a social hub: in the kitchen, Lett-Haines’ cousin, the food writer Elizabeth David, could be found at the stove, childrens’ author Kathleen Hale handed around platters – and, yes, the marmalade cat of her sto- ries looked on – while Lett-Haines mixed martinis and told stories of tiffs with Hemingway in 1920s Paris. To Blythe, then a shy young librar- ian, the atmosphere was “out of this world so far as I had previously tasted it. The generous ghosts at Rough and ready and fine mannered. I began in bright sunshine but soon it was gloomy and raining - yet again. The Wellington Weekly has a correspondent who reports monthly on the weather we have experienced during the month. He recorded that we had only one 24 hour period during the whole of December, when there was no rain. No wonder that there are twenty five square miles of flooded land on the Levels. I remember calling February the month of “full dyke”. One dreads what the land will be like when the floods finally drain away. I notice that Mary Keen writes in “The Garden” how much there is, of quality, to be seen in the garden in what is often regarded as the dead period. It set me off recall- ing what I have in my small mid-terrace garden.

INTRODUCTION Julie Brown, Collections Curator Yasmin David (1939-2009) produced a prolific body of work over 50 years. Well-connected, coming from the prodigious Garman clan, her mother Lorna was the youngest of nine remarkable siblings, whose influence spanned the artistic, social and political life of the early 20th century. Yasmin’s aunt Kathleen Garman, donor to The New Art Gallery, was the life partner of sculptor Jacob Epstein, and first mother-in-law of painter Lucian Freud. Yasmin’s brother was the celebrated 20th century painter, Michael Wishart (1928-1996), who studied under Cedric Morris at his East Anglian School of Painting, and moved in the same circles as Francis Bacon. Yasmin could have had the contacts to have exhibited widely, should she have chosen to. She believed her brother, Michael, had been tormented by his genius (his dependency on drugs and alcohol were well documented). Lorna Wishart (1911-2000) was a vivacious character who captivated those around her with her Hollywood starlet demeanour. A young Lucian Freud was besotted with her, and she inspired early works such as Girl in an Ocelot Coat, 1944.
