Sara Taxén Uppsala Universitet Statsvetenskapliga institutionen Kandidatuppsats Höstterminen 2016 Handledare: Johan Matz Sidor: 44 Ord: 13 377 Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine whether gender equality is a present and important theme in South Africa today. This will be done with the prospect of being able to discuss the country’s future in terms of gender equality, and whether a positive change can affect the general development in a country that is important for the region both economically and in terms of gender equality. The study therefore examines South Africa’s three biggest political parties’ election manifestos for the municipal elections that were held in august 2016 – ANC’s, DA’s and EFF’s - to find out how gender equality is addressed, or not addressed. The study was conducted using quantitative and qualitative content analysis. The results show, from a party political perspective, that the elections were neither gender equal nor was there a present, significant gender equality discourse. Therefore this study concludes that the prospects of South Africa continuing to develop in the area of gender equality are pessimistic in the nearest future, as well as of it initiating a positive change in the countries’ general development - despite a changing political landscape.
