Spring 2018 | www.htcinc.net 3 A word from Mike Hagg, HTC CEO

Dear reader and fellow Cooperative member,

Welcome back to the latest issue of Life Connections! We loved hearing your feedback on our Winter Edition, and we hope you continue to share your reactions.

In this issue, we cover a range of interesting subjects suitable for this early summer season. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at an HTC commercial shoot, learn the pros and cons of different web browsers and ad blockers, peek inside the creative mind of a local artist, get the inside scoop on the HVAC, plumbing and electrical experts at Carolina Cool, savor the flavor of a favorite community restaurant, explore the Internet of Things, gain the skills you’ll need to be a summer grill master, and so much more.

On page 13, you can compare the pros and cons of different web browsers and ad blockers. Although you probably use the internet every day, you may not have considered how these two components can positively or negatively impact your experience. And, on page 18, you can further explore this phenomenon called the Internet of Things. It’s crazy to think that the futuristic tech gadgets found in decades- old Hollywood films have become our reality, but they can improve our lives in many ways. Smarter security, more seamless daily tasks and a “greener” approach — our ever-evolving world of technology promises big and bright things. Read on to learn how it all affects you, and let us know what you think!

There are many interesting and passionate people right here in our community, and we are glad this magazine is able to shed light on their stories. Caring for this community is deeply woven into the fabric of HTC — and it goes far beyond providing high-quality products and services. Improving the lives of individuals and businesses in our community has allowed us to refund more than $122 million in Capital Credits to our members over the years — and that makes a significant impact on our community’s economy.

Capital Credits are the way that HTC members — including you — are able to share in the Cooperative’s financial success. As a partial shareholder in the Cooperative, your Capital Credit allocations depend on how many services you have with HTC and the revenues that they generate.

Join in a further discussion of Capital Credits at the HTC Annual Membership Meeting on August 7, 2018. Voting on board members, networking and Cooperative announcements will all take place, as well as some wonderful live entertainment by a local band, Oracle Blue. You won’t want to miss out — save the date, and we will look forward to connecting with you there!

Best regards,

Michael Hagg, Chief Executive Officer Horry Telephone Cooperative, Inc.

Spring 2018 | www.htcinc.net 9 Sizzlin' Hot Summer Grilling Tips

GET YOUR GRILLS READY: Memorial Day weekend unofficially marks the start of summer cookouts. There’s nothing better than enjoying a day by the water and coming home to fire up the grill and spend a summer night with the ones who matter most. Whether you’re hosting a celebratory cookout for your graduating senior or simply looking for dinner ideas, a backyard barbecue is the perfect way to spend a sunny summer afternoon. So gather the neighbors, get your grocery list together, and get grilling!

10 www.htcinc.net | Spring 2018 THE BATTLE BETWEEN GAS & CHARCOAL Overall, gas grills burn “cleaner,” while charcoal emits more carbon monoxide. However, many argue that the taste of food cooked on a charcoal grill has a richer, smokier flavor. It comes down to personal preference, as there is no hard evidence to prove which option is healthier.

OPT FOR HEALTHIER CHOICES. There are many easy substitutes you can make to help keep your family fit and healthy this summer. Plus, a light meal is often welcomed on a muggy summer day.

• MAKE VEGGIES THE MAIN ATTRACTION. Kebabs are a delicious and fun way to make grilled meals a little lighter. Layer colorful bell peppers, eggplant, zucchini, onions, and small pieces of chicken or lean meat on a skewer — you can even use fruit like pineapple or papaya! Smaller pieces of meat take less time on the grill, making this healthy choice a time-saver, too.

GET IT HOT, HOT, HOT! • PICK THE RIGHT PROTEIN. Pre-heating your grill for 15 to 25 While steaks, burgers and hot dogs are pretty much synonymous with minutes before you start cooking grilling out, there are plenty of heart-healthy, vegetarian and alternative ensures that the grill is hot enough choices for your summer cookout. For a burger substitute, try grilling to kill any bacteria. Getting your portobello mushrooms and serving them on a bun with lettuce, tomato grill to the right temperature (about and aioli. Or, marinate skinless chicken in Italian salad dressing for an easy 400-450 degrees for high heat, 350 and lean meal. Swap these sides full of caramelization and helps prevent saturated fats and empty calories with raw or grilled vegetables, fruit sticking. Use the “hand test” to salad, tri-color bean salad or sweet potato fries. Of course, sometimes gauge the temperature if you don’t you just have to get a taste of mac and cheese, and that’s perfectly OK! have a thermometer — but always Moderation is key, so load your plate with veggies, and don’t be afraid remember to keep your hands a safe to indulge a little bit in your favorite flavors. distance from the heat! Place your open palm 5-6 inches above the rack. • SATISFY YOUR SWEET TOOTH. In fact, you can create a mouthwatering and healthy dish with medium heat if you have to move fresh summer produce. Try putting halved bananas, sliced apples or your hand after five seconds, and pears, or large pieces of sweet South Carolina peaches right on the grill. low heat if you have to remove your The natural sugars found in fruit caramelize on the high heat of the grill, hand after 10 seconds. and the result is a sweet summer treat!

End the school year with a celebratory bar-b-que We here at HTC wish to extend the warmest congratulations to Horry County’s graduating senior class! As a staunch supporter of our community’s schools and educational efforts for more than 65 years, it fills us with pride to see all of the local young men and women making major strides toward a bright future. Congrats, class of 2018!

Spring 2018 | www.htcinc.net 11 Keep it clean. This certainly isn’t as fun as the eating part of a cookout, but it’s necessary nonetheless. It’s easier to remove debris from your grill when it’s hot, so scrape with a long-handled wire grill brush after the preheating stage and before you put food on. Use the same brush to scrape again after all of your food is cooked, before the grill cools down. Not only is this a good practice for practical reasons, but removing leftover burnt pieces after you use your grill helps prevent unwanted smoking and bitter flavors on your food the next time you use it.

SUMMER COOKOUT SAFETY TIPS • Avoid cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards for meats and fruits/vegetables.

• Refrigerate foods until it’s time to grill them — that allows more time to marinate in addition to lowering the risk of spoiling.

• Keep a squirt bottle of water near your grill so that you can quickly react to any unexpected flare-ups.

For Tim Matthews, being an artist is not an interest that He was about 12 years old at the time, and he reached can be pinpointed to an exact moment. Instead, it’s a out to a professional artist based out of Rock Hill lifelong passion that now serves as his livelihood. named Joyce Wright, who eventually turned into a teacher, mentor and friend. After Joyce explained how “When I first got interested in learning to paint, I many years Alan Lee-level of work typically takes to was also about the age when I first read ‘Lord of the perfect, Tim buckled up and got started on a journey Rings’,” explains Tim. “There’s an Englishman named that has lasted ever since. Alan Lee who was so talented, he was invited to be a concept artist for the film franchise based on the books. “Working with her really opened up my horizons Essentially, the movies look like his illustrations. So one beyond what I’d seen in children’s books and Christmas, my dad got me a book of his illustrations, illustrations — I remember she even had a large and they were just so beautiful. It had 50 watercolor painting of a wave crashing that was almost as tall paintings that he had done. It showed me the potential as me at the time!” Tim laughs. “I was in awe of it. for watercolor — I think before that I thought You could almost hear the water. She taught me the watercolors were for a kid’s art class or something, and majority of what I know about drawing and painting.” this just really opened my eyes to it. I was hooked.”

20 www.htcinc.net | Spring 2018 Today, canvas work — specifically oil and acrylic painting — is his primary focus.

“It’s hard to choose a favorite piece — I almost feel like a parent picking a favorite kid, for lack of a better expression,” Tim chuckles. “Some pieces do come more naturally than others, of course. I did paint a large mural in a church, and I’m proud of that one.”

A local Sunday school class approached him about painting a mural of the Mediterranean that depicted where Jesus lived, and where the apostles traveled and ministered. Based only off of the small black-and-white map in the back of a Bible, Tim brought the map to life using first a pencil, and then later entire buckets of paint and household paintbrushes. From start to finish, the whole thing took about two and a half months.

“It was somewhere between 8 and 10 feet long — it was huge. I had to stand on a ladder to reach most of it. It was a bit of a show just painting it! To paint the parts toward the ceiling I had to get on the ladder, hunch my shoulders and turn my neck — but it was fun. I enjoyed it,” says Tim.

In fact, in a way, the project brought everything full circle. Tim’s aforementioned Rock Hill art teacher also painted a mural in that same church (where she is a member) around 1979. It was a happy coincidence, and now the two share work close together indefinitely.

His process depends on the project, but if it’s a local spot, Tim will start by going in person to snap a photo. From there, he’ll create a sketch and send it to the commissioner, and move forward with painting upon approval. If that’s not feasible, he tries to get a high- quality image from the client. Most of his leads come through his website or social media, and a large portion of his work comes via word of mouth. Interestingly, his most frequent request is to paint childhood homes.

“It’s not so much the subject itself that people want, it’s just that they want something to capture a happy feeling or a memory,” says Tim, “so that’s what I try to capture in my artistic process.”

Those strong emotions aren’t limited to childhood homes, though. Tim has worked on everything ranging from churches to college campus landmarks to pets.

“I love photography, but I feel like it’s limiting in some respects, so I try to really just find the heart in whatever I’m painting and capture that.”
