The permit was issued by the Shanghai Municipal Government, with NIO becoming the first company to receive such a permit in China. During the event, Chen Mingbo, Chairman of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization highly praised NIO’s autonomous driving technology R&D and tests. “NIO is an industrial leader in intelligence, electrification and connectivity – working on leading-edge technology, R&D and testing” the Chairman said. “We hope that NIO can continue to make contributions to China’s autonomous driving development after getting the permit.” In a statement during the event, NIO Co-Founder and President Lihong Qin stated, “We are honored to have received the permit from the Shanghai Municipal Government. Their decision to grant us this permit shows their faith in NIO’s autonomous driving R&D technology and testing. We will now be able to further the development of our autonomous driving technologies.” The NIO ES8 has already gone through extensive trials in enclosed testing areas and sites. With the permit obtained, NIO has the legal protection for future road tests on designated roads in Shanghai. It was a mark of respect from a chief executive who had been through “manufacturing hell” with his own company. Yet it is also a sign of the growing influence of China’s electric carmakers. They are hoping to stake out a spot among the heavyweights of the new industry and bring a significant new challenge to Tesla – and to the rest of the automotive industry as it scrambles to catch up. Tesla mania and cheap money have pushed the market valuations of a clutch of electric carmakers to astonishing levels. Tesla’s value topped $830bn (£600bn) in January (it is now down at about $700bn – still almost three times the size of its nearest rival, Japanese carmaker Toyota). Chinese rivals Nio, Xpeng and Li Auto have all rapidly risen in value to rival much bigger and longer-established manufacturers – despite having never made an annual profit – on the back of US stock market listings that brought access to retail investors, although their values have fallen steeply from highs earlier this year. In the inclement weather that the Nürburgring Nordschleife is known for, the EP9 completed two laps of the 20.8 km (12.9m) ‘Green Hell’, one of which was in 7m 05.12s, beating the previous EV lap record, making it the fastest electric car in the world. The EP9’s new lap record is 19.22 seconds faster than its previous lap time. Last month, NIO announced that it plans to produce a second batch of ten EP9s, and each one will be made to order. The NIO EP9 is priced at 1.48 million USD. Car si la diusion du véhicule électrique doit contribuer à dépol- luer les villes et à réduire la dépendance aux importations d’hydrocarbures, elle vise surtout, dans l’esprit des dirigeants, à donner naissance à une nouvelle filière industrielle — avec l’ambition d’en devenir le leader mondial.
