hat began by Harry Preston as a tumble over a mound of quartz, covered with Wmoss and laden with gold has evolved into a century of growth, partnerships and many successes. The original Dome Mine was incorporated on March 23rd, 1910. Remarkably, after over 100 years of production, the Dome Underground and world-class mill remain a vital part of Timmins. Furthermore, and for the first time in the history of the Porcupine Camp, all the significant past and present producers of gold, including the Dome, Hoyle Pond and Hollinger operations, are owned by one company. Goldcorp’s Porcupine Gold Mines has brought together over 100 years of history and is actively pursuing opportunities to continue our mining legacy for many years to come.

Workplace Safety North - Ontario Provincial Mine Rescue Competition 2014 Long-term Service Recognition

30+ Years Service

Isabella Caron – Isabella Caron started as a contract worker for the Ontario Ministry of Labour on Cedar Street in Sudbury in 1977, but soon found an interest and passion for Ontario Mine Rescue. Isabella joined Ron Eveson, Ontario’s Senior Mine Rescue Officer in 1980, and quickly became an indispensable member of OMR, where organizing the annual provincial competition for more than 30 years was only a small part of her role. Her Ontario Mine Rescue family – Isabella regularly hosted gatherings at her home for mine rescue officers – came second to her immediate family, daughters Kelly and Angela, and husband Gates. Isabella’s passion for mine rescue spread to include her family – Gates was a valuable member of the Ontario Mine Rescue provincial competition “cast and crew” from 1994 until 2012. Isabella and Gates frequently travel to the Caribbean, tearing themselves away from grandchildren, Kage born to Angela in 2009, and twins Abigale and Alexander born to Kelly in 2013. If the trend continues triplets are on the way.

30 Years Service

Jeff Sowerby – Jeff started mining at the Compass Minerals, Sifto Goderich Salt Mine in the summer of 1981, joining the mine rescue team in 1984. He started participating on the competition team in 1985, becoming team captain by 1988. With Jeff as captain, the Sifto team placed second in the 1989 Provincial Competition. In 1990 Jeff’s team won the Provincial Championship and became what continues to this day to be the last team from the Southern District to do so. Jeff continues to maintain active status as a mine rescue responder, and also shares his experience with the current competition teams, assisting as the coach of the competition team and judging at mine rescue competitions. Jeff, still with the Sifto Goderich Mine, is currently a trainer in the Safety Department and enjoys his off-time raising and training German Wirehaired Pointers. He is a well-respected member of the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association, and judges hunting dog field trials throughout Canada and the US.
