President’s Report

At this time last year I noted in my report that the uncertainties that existed surrounding the structure of the 2010 competition; retain Saturday or change to a Sunday based competition, posed a potential threat to the shape of the Tigers future.

In the event, the competition did go to Sunday (on a two year trial basis) but the predicted dire consequences of this change failed to materialise at Hollymount Park. In fact 2010 turned out to be great year for the Tigers both on and off the field.

On the Field

I will leave the detailed descriptions of our on-field accomplishments to our coaches in the Team Reports section of the Yearbook but there are three events that deserve special mention:

1. Despite a drop in membership due retirements, people leaving the district and the change to a Sunday competition, the formation of our first youth girls team was a milestone in the club’s development and helped maintain the club’s overall playing list at a healthy one hundred and forty four; only six less than our numbers in 2009.

2. All teams with the exception of the 11s qualified for the finals with our fabulous 15s going all the way to become the 2010 Illawarra premiers.

3. Adding to this list of achievements was the winning the inaugural Dave Johnson “Fair Play” trophy, and a creditable 3rd place in Illawarra Club Championship.

Off the Field

2010 was also year of significant change at Hollymount Park. However, despite the uncertainty prevailing at the end of 2009, the Tigers off field performance in 2010 matched the success enjoyed by our players and coaches on the field.

Faced with the challenge presented by escalating operating costs, our contribution toward the cost for the field lights at Hollymount Park, and loss of revenue from the discontinued Beaches raffle, the Tigers committee undertook a review of our sponsorship register and the registration fee structure that had been in place for some years.

In both instances diligent planning and implementation work saw success; our sponsorship register rising to sixteen, our membership numbers hovering close to last year’s and our balance sheet healthy.

With regard to our sponsors and on behalf of the club I wish to extend our heartfelt thanks for the support provided by Tigers sponsors in 2010. Without their generosity, our club would not be able to provide many of the benefits that our players and parents/carers enjoy today.

In addition to the initatives outlined above, the stability provided by the 2010 competition draw (no Saturday/Sunday split rounds) helped generate good crowds at home games and an excellent profit from our canteen.

Apart from the excellent business result, the canteen also served as a model for what can be achieved by many people doing small jobs; the effort shown by club parents and supporters in staffing the canteen was excellent and in no small way contributed to our canteen operating so successfully in 2010.

At a purely administrative level, the committee developed a number of policies designed to provide future adminstrations with guidance when faced with sometimes contentious issues. These policies have been posted on our website for easy reference.

Other changes atHollymount Park were more obvious; the new field lights, the sealing of the carpark and the commissioning of the ground watering system were all completed in early to mid 2010.

It was pleasing to see the planning and work of previous committees, and particularly Neil Livermore, finally to come to fruition.

5 Northern Districts Tigers Junior AFC 2011 Yearbook

There was however one unforseen development and that was the granting of a licence by Wollongong City Council for priority access to the field lights and clubhouse to the Tigers Seniors.

The agreement with council, covering a period of five years, was negotiated by the AFL to ensure Australian Football had a long term home in the northern suburbs.

Again, Neil Livermore was instrumental in achieving this outcome and he is to be congratulated for his foresight and perseverence in the work he has done for the advancement of our club.

The Future

The future of any amateur club or organisation relies entirely on the ability and willingness of its volunteer members to undertake the administrative and on-field tasks necessary to ensure that the organisation’s mission can be realised.

The end of 2010 is a pivotal moment in the Tigers’ with the retirement from active duty of three of the “99ers”; Will Tibben, Neil Livermore, and Brad Green.

Over the years since the club was founded, these club administrative and coaching stalwarts have had a significant influence over the club’s development and success.

In terms of experience, it will be hard if not impossible to replace them in the short term.

However, in terms of willingness the club has always managed to find people who will rise to the challenge when it is presented.

I believe that moment is now.

In this, my final report, I would like to express, on behalf of the club, my admiration and thanks to the 99ers and to the other members and executive of the 2010 committee for their help and wise counsel during my two years as president.

In conclusion: With the inevitable passing of the “old guard”, the Tigers future lies squarely in the hands of its newer families; people who can maintain the Tigers traditions, continue to build on the foundations of its success, and ensure the club’s future as a leader in the promotion and development of Illawarra Junior Australian Football.

Treasurer’s Report

The club’s financial management over the 2010 seaon reflects the success of other aspects of the club’s activities, returning a balance of $7029.25 in available funds for the commencement of the 2011 season.

This result contrasts with the uncertainty generated in late 2009 by the potential impact the change to a Sunday competition might have on the Tigers’ membership and the direct and indirect revenue streams derived therefrom.

At that time the reported balance of funds available (after allowance for a committed $5000 contribution to the installation of field lights at Hollymount Park and some other items) was $3497.00

Prompted by these issues, the committee undertook a review our overall budget costs and revenues and a number of initiatives were proposed and implemented; namely:

• An increase in registration fees designed to refelect more accurately the cost of putting fully kitted players on the field. The fee included an up-front fundraising component to compensate for the loss of the Beaches Friday night raffle and the difficulty encountered in finding volunteers to organise fund raising events.

• A marketing campaign to increase the number of newsletter business card sponsors and team sponsors from outside the club. In this endeavour, we were reasonably successful, bringing on board Woonona Physio, Austibeach Café, Essential Surf & Skate, and Rock a Bye as business card sponsors together with AVC and Pace Rowlands Bell as team sponsors.

Earlier concerns regarding the impact of the Sunday competition were dispelled after registration, with only a small drop in overall membership numbers.

This outcome together with the stability provided by the 2010 draw the canteen takings help relieve the pressure on the budget’s bottom line.

Other major contributors to the club’s income included the Bellambi Raffle operated by Brad Green, and club player and supporter wear sales managed by Michael Robinson.

For the future, the club can draw comfort from the fact that there is no major financial commitment hanging over it, and the new registration fee structure introduced in 2010 was well accepted by the membership at large, and no change is anticipated for 2011.

The new licence agreement between the seniors and Wollongong City Council will undoubtedly have some impact on the budget as the juniors may have to share the burden of club house maintenance costs plus of course, the operation of the new field lights.

Retirements

The end of the 2010 season saw the retirement from committee and executive service of Will Tibben, Donna Thompson, Carolyn Roebuck, Neil Livermore, Graham and Kellie Court, Stuart Thomson and Brad Green.

Combined, this group has given the Tigers nearly half a century of service, both on and off the field. The club will miss their dedication and loyalty to the cause of Australian football and the children who choose to play this great game.

Graham & Kellie Court

Graham and Kellie have jointly managed the canteen for the past two years. They deserve special mention for their dedication during the 2009 “split round season” when on many occassions they operated the canteen on the Saturday and Sunday of the same weekend.

In recognition of their service to the club, Graham and Kellie were elected joint Club Persons of the Year in 2009.

Brad Green

Brad leaves the Tigers coaching ranks after ten years continuous service. Beginning with Auskick in 2000, where his teams were undefeated for three years, Brad coached teams to nine grand finals, winning six including the Tigers U15s in 2010.

At the administrative level, Brad served the club as Youth Football manager in 2009 and 2010. Brad has also operated the prfitable Bellambi Hotel raffle for many years to help maintain the club’s financial viability.

In recognition of his service to the Tigers, Brad was elected Club Person of the Year in 2008 and has a new medal; the “Brad Green Junior Club Person of the Year”, struck in his honour.

Neil Livermore

Neil has served on the Tigers committee for many years including terms as President in 2001 and 2002, and Vice President in 2000 and 2008. He also ran a profitable weekly raffle for the club at Beaches Hotel from 2005-08 and coached in 2008.

For several years Neil produced submissions and negotiated with Wollongong Council which led to the club having a new clubhouse in 2006 as well as new field lights, a ground watering system and a re-surfaced car park in 2009-10. Neil’s son Ben played in the the clubs first year in 1999, through to seniors and his other son Luke had his last year in U/17s this year.

In recognition of his service, Neil was elected Club Person of the Year in 2001 and 2005.

Carolyn Roebuck

Carolyn has been with the Tigers since 2006 and during that period has provided loyal and dedicated service as in the dual roles of secretary/newsletter editor in 2007 and treasurer in 2010.

Carolyn was also a generous donor to the clubhouse building and refurbishment project.

9 Northern Districts Tigers Junior AFC 2011 Yearbook

Will Tibben

Will has given 12 years of continuous service to the Tigers in various administrative roles. He began his work in 1999 as an Assistant Ground Manager. He joined the committee in 2000 and took on the role of Registrar in 2001 which he did for two years.

Will also assumed full responsibility as Ground Manager in 2001 and has carried out this role in conjunction with others over the ensuing years.

He has been able to make a contribution to the work of each of the committees since 2000 and has at times represented the Tigers at regional meetings as well as the Woonona-Bulli Sports Council. Over the past year he served as the club's vice-president.

In recognition of Will’s service to the club, he was elected Club Persons of the Year in 2003.

Donna Thompson

Donna arrived at the Tigers in 2006 and during ensuing years has given dedicated and effective service both on the executive as Registrar in 2008 and 2009, and as a general committee member in 2010.

Stuart Thomson

Stuart began his association with the Tigers in 2005 and since that time has given six years continuous service in various roles including team management, ground management, game day administration, newsletter editor, coaching and club executive member.

In the coaching role Stuart acted as Auskick assistant coach and team manager from 2005 to 2007; and coached the U9s in 2008.

At the administrative level Stuart was elected president in 2009 and 2010.

In recognition of his service to the club, Stuart was elected Club Person of the Year in 2010.

Coach’s Report

Well with our season over I can honestly say it was everything I expected. Utter chaos!!!

Only kidding. One thing that I wasn’t expecting was the pride and joy as the season went on seeing my players grow not only individually but as a team.

I would like to quickly thank Stuart for his support as my first year as coach and the parents who braved the cold and helped on the field.

To start my first year as coach and with most of my players also starting there first year in Auskick, I as a little worried I was biting of more than I could chew, but as the boys grew and improved it was quick to see that I was a very lucky coach with a great team.

I hope all the boys enjoyed the season as much as I did and continue there playing not only in AFL but with the mighty Tigers.

Hope to see you all next year.

#18- Luke Sealey

“Buddy” can be a forward Sealey, took the role of leader with the team huddles and on field talks, loves the game and loves a goal.

“Mr Cheeky”, he kicks, he hand balls and scores lots of goals. If he plays up next year I hope the other kids are ready because he can also “”.

12 Northern Districts Tigers Junior AFC 2010 Yearbook

#14 - Cooper Bennett

Strong in defence and a lovely long kick. Coop was one of the cheeky members of the team and always made training enjoyable

#7 - Isaac Dosey-Shaw

Ikey is the tallest member of the team, always made his present felt on the field and was very handy in the backs as most could not kick over his head!

#19 - Hamish Seager

If you could bottle up his energy and sell it to the seniors he would make a fortune. One of the most energetic kids.

#2 - Hunter Powell

Our import from NT with fantastic skills and a beautiful kick pass has a great awareness of team mates.

#30 - Isaac Plumridge

Started later in the season and quickly realized that the Auskick fields are too small. Kicking goals from centre off the field will be a strong player up a grade next year.

#17 - Giani Barone-Peters

Only a few games in the season, Gianni was quick to pick up the skills of the game and quickly became our ruckman, hope to see you next year.

#5 - Joshua Ayrton

As the season went on so did Josh’s confidence. It was there for all to see from a quite lad to a voice of the team. It was fantastic to see.

#11 – Jake Stewart

“Mr Football” the best centre in any team we played. A ball magnet, I pity the future teams when he plays up and we wont have to take the ball off him to share it around.

Coach’s Report

The ‘Mighty Niners” played with true Tiger spirit for the year and made all the parents and coaches proud. Winning more games than we lost I believe whilst may not have been the most successful team in the competition we were the ‘best team’.

All the kids got on well and I believe had heaps of fun. To me seeing their skills improve, enjoying themselves and falling in love with this great game are the most important things. For the parents to spend quality time being involved whether it be coaching, helping out at training, officiating or just watching and supporting are memories that we should be proud of.

I was lucky enough not only to have a great bunch of kids playing but a brilliant support team in Pete and Brett and a group of parents always willing to goal umpire and help out. The sportsmanship shown by the parents reflect in the children. Again, we were the number one team for this.

So to all the parents and kids I thank you

Win, lose or draw kids would fire up for an ear bursting, off key rendition of the tigers song after the game.

At the end of training we would have a Dad’s vs. kids (or the “knuckle-heads” as they liked to call themselves) game. At first, us parents took it easy on the kids but by the end of the year with the team work, skill and determination not to lose the side bets the kids were out gunning the Dad’s.

14 Northern Districts Tigers Junior AFC 2010 Yearbook

I would also thank the hard working committee that makes the Tigers the great club it is’ especially the hard working president Stuart Thomson. Stu’s work around the club is immeasurable.

As for next year we are already recruiting and hope all current players come back. This is a team that will be very good again next year and that will be very encouraging for the Tigers in the future.

15 Northern Districts Tigers Junior AFC 2010 Yearbook

Player Profiles

#9 – Leon Cummins 12 Games

Mr Fantastic

Part of the ‘gymnasto twins’. The background in gymnastics certainly helped with the fitness and flexibility. Extremely highly skilled and his beautiful kick nearly always found a target. Often kicked long and set up many attacks. Great overhead mark and always looked for the very quick handball which always found a team mate. Loved the long bomb and had the goal ump holding up two fingers on many occasions.

#14 – Vincent Cummins 12 Games

Mr Elastic.

The other gymnasto. Seemed to be able to reach high in the sky or down low to gather the ball with consummate ease. Very strong hands making Vincent a good target up forward. Great overhead mark, which is a fantastic skill to have at this age. Often like magic found his brother at the end of a long kick. Very reliable kick and loved seeing them fly through the big sticks. Both twins will be players in the future.

#3 – Logan Davis 11 Games

Mr Mazda

“Zoom Zoom” with this pocket rocket. Light bodied but beautifully skilled. Ability to run into space and take strong marks. Quick burst of speed when needed he rarely was tackled and if he was not kicking goals, he was setting them up. Solid in defence and used his smarts to set up many plays.

#10 – Finn Harper-Cass 12 Games

Mr Showbiz

With long flowing hair, he stood out in every game. Coming along nicely as a player as all aspects of his game got better with every game during the year. Took some great marks and when he got on to some of his kicks, man, they would look to go miles (or KM’s for you young kids). Very much a confidence player and when he was on; he was on.

#15 – Matilda Healy 11 Games

Ms Bunning’s

Tough as nails, you would always find Matilda at the bottom of the packs. If it was, a ball up she would dust her self off and go again. Top grade tackler earning her many free kicks. Skills improved enormously through out the year resulting in her kicking a few goals. Tiger to the core as no one could belt out the team song louder and prouder.

#11 – Lachlan Ludewig 11 Games

Mr Mini

Like the Mini’s in the Italian job, Lochie could get himself in and out of some pretty tight squeezes. New to the game, this year Lochie took the game like a duck to water. Very strong hands for a small player. Lightning quick, he often danced around the opponents with ease many times resulting in kicking or setting up goals. Probably the best hand- baller in the team. Very team orientated and always looked for his team-mates.

16 Northern Districts Tigers Junior AFC 2010 Yearbook

#13 – Tomas Mott 11 Games

Mr Muscles

Strong like ‘King Kong’, Tom often broke open the game with consistent strong marking. Would love to burst through a pack of players. Always quick to play on and keen to take opposition on. Beautiful long kick which usually found its target. Very good leap which won many ruck contests and has a fantastic ‘never stop to the final bell” attitude.

#6 – Brody Ryan 12 Games

The V8

Big engine and played his heart out every single minute of every game. Blistering pace and ability to burst through packs and deliver the ball. Loved taking the opposition on to break the game open. Strong in defence and a bone crunching tackler. Kicked some fantastic goals. Tough as the come, hard at the ball and just loves the game.

#12 – Jonathon Seager 12 Games

Mr Dazzle

Johna’s played some great games this year. Massive improvement in aspects of the game. Marking, kicking, tackling and handball improved out of sight. But it was the attitude shift that impressed the coaches the most. No longer a ‘bit’ player he took his game to a new level making him such an important part of the team.

#17 – William Seager 12 Games

Mr Razzle

Between “Johna” and his twin William they could both ‘razzle-dazzle’ the crowd and the opposition.

Another confidence player that would see early touches turn into great games. Laid some sensational tackles that made the opposition very wary. Reads the play well especially in defence and never gave up an easy goal. Likes to go forward and kick a couple as well.

#5 – Patrick Davis 11 Games

Although Patrick was officially listed as a U10 he doubled up every week to play for the Mighty Niners as well and played 11 games for them.

For more on Patrick see U10 Player Profiles

#1 – Koen Platt 0 Games

The broken man

Koen wanted to play up from Auskick this year and looked like he was going to go very well. Unfortunately, he broke his leg skateboarding and never made it on the paddock. He is a member of the team and will ‘roar’ next year.

Coach’s Report

Despite the rain affected year and lost games the Under 10 team thoroughly enjoyed their AFL experience, had success on the field and continued to improve their skills throughout the year.

Training highlights included our annual beach session (no one lost at sea) and a team bonding walk up the escarpment to Sublime Point (James whinged and Owen farted all the way).

We started the season off as world beaters and were undefeated for the first 6 games, experienced a mid season slump and finished the season off with a close hard fought win thanks to divine intervention. Zane encouraged us to ask for help and I was pleased to know The Big Guy supports the Tigers.

Our team had a number of very talented individual players who contributed strongly all year. However, as we all know AFL is a team game and you need contributions from everyone to be a successful team. I was very impressed with the development of all the existing and first year players throughout the year. Everyone’s kicking, marking, handpassing and general play improved significantly.

18 Northern Districts Tigers Junior AFC 2010 Yearbook

It’s been a real pleasure coaching and managing the U10 in 2010, they area terrific group who enjoy their sport, demonstrate fairness and sportsmanship and have a great sense of humour. This can be attributed to the wonderful parents they have.

Thanks for everyone’s support at training, games and throughout the season it made our jobs so much easier. Enjoy the rest of 2010 and I look forward to seeing everyone back in 2011.

Player Profiles

#18 – Thomas Blunden 30 Games

He prides himself as being the hit man of the team and likes to exercise his physical presence on the field. Even when playing for the opposition he tackles them. His marking, kicking and general play improved significantly throughout the year.

#22 - Angus Cross 17 Games

A reliable versatile player who can play forward, centre or back successfully. He possesses a great set of hands, kicks the ball long and enjoys the physical contest. He was always willing to play for the other team in order to secure additional lollies.

#5 - Patrick Davis 33 Games (includes 11 in 9s)

A skilful small forward who kicked a number of sensational goals. He added defensive pressure to his game and applied bone jarring tackles.

#2 – Phillipa Davis 11 Games

The best set and running kick in our team, this girl can kick a text book drop punt. Pip combines her kicking ability with hard running, great marking and strong tackling skills. A very complete player

#19 – Jeremy Evans 12 Games

A first year player to AFL who made a great contribution to the team. He played his best football on the Half Back and Wing using his evasion skills and speed. A very safe pair of hands when marking, a long kick and a willingness to win the hard ball.

#7 – Zane Granger 22 Games

One of our most improved players. His marking, kicking and tackling skills were great. He also helped in winning our last home game by asking for divine intervention, it worked.

#30 - James Green 22 Games

Played most of the season in the centre where he used his height, strength and speed to win the hard ball and set up forward attacks. His marking and kicking improved throughout the year. A solid contribution all year.

#29 - Zachary Joseph 22 Games

Zac (Little Gaz) show’s the same level of speed, skill, poise and ability as his hero Gary Ablett. Zac’s greatest attribute is his genuine enthusiasm and love for playing AFL. His pre goal celebrations and smile are a joy to observe.

20 Northern Districts Tigers Junior AFC 2010 Yearbook

#16 - Damon O’Neil 28 Games

He plays well above his age and provided a good target up forward, is very accurate in front of goal, tackles hard and kicked a number of very good individual goals. He contributed solidly throughout the year.

#28 - Riley Plat 14 Games

A first year player to AFL who made a great contribution to the team. An athlete who demonstrated explosive speed, balance, skill and hunger for the ball all year. Despite taking heavy knocks he always bounced up and got back in the play immediately

#25 - Bayley Robinson 13 Games

A first year player to AFL who made a great contribution to the team. His confidence and skills improved significantly throughout the year. His attack on the ball and involvement in the last few games showed he’d developed into a major contributor.

#20 - Liam Robinson 25 Games

A very tough physical player who leads by example; if there’s a hard ball to win Liam’s there. A very smart and enthusiastic player who’s developing into a great team leader. Badly missed for the last 5 games due to post ear surgery recovery.

#24 - Oscar Scown 27 Games

Speed and skill to burn. Oscar is so fast he can kick a ball 40 meters up field and run down and mark it before it bounces. Played forward for much of the year and kicked plenty of goals then pushed into the centre where he dominated, an outstanding year.

Coach’s Report

2010 proved to be a difficult year for this group of likeable young characters. Punctuated by players missing due to other commitments and player injuries, the season did not go as smoothly as we would have liked. Despite this, the team always managed to stand up and be counted, and finished just outside the top four to unfortunately miss the finals.

My aims as coach this year were not greatly different to last year; to have the kids kicking like AFL players, and hand balling properly. We are well on the way to achieving this, plus some team play that I would have thought would be a season away. Each player has demonstrated great commitment to improving the skills they have, and the way they play the game.

This is a great bunch of kids who know how to enjoy themselves, and have a good balance of competitive nature and ambition to learn and improve.

Due to our depleted numbers at various time in the season a number of the under 10 players made up our numbers which was really appreciated by players and parents. The boys who stepped up boosted our numbers and our strength, showing great promise for the future for junior Tigers teams.

I am extremely confident that as our players mature and build on the skills and game play they have developed they will form some very competitive teams.

Nine of the boys from this years squad of 14 are now playing basketball together on a Wednesday night. Hopefully this will keep their Tigers spirit growing, and give them some additional skills they can bring back to footy next season; fit and keen as ever. So far they have done really well, and I’m sure that will carry through to the 2011 season.

I hope to see everyone back for more then.

Player Profiles

#20 – Noah Butler 58 Games

Noah is a real competitor, very skillful and a master in front of goals. Noah has had another great season, and despite being away for several games this year managed to accrue the goals required to win the top goal scorer award for the third year running. Noah also represented the Illawarra in the under 11’s Storm team during the season.

#12 - Declan Cleary 38 Games

Deccy is one of the many under 11’s who had time out due to injury this year. He came back with vengeance kicking a bag of goals. Deccy made his trade mark attempting to break through the pack rugby style, often managing to do it very effectively.

#7 - Will Craigen 38 Games

Will continued on from last year with great form deep in the back line. Will is dedicated to holding the last line of defence, and has broadened his game plan to attacking the ball as it comes into the defence, turning defence into attack. Will enjoyed his time with the Junior Swans academy.

#6 - Miles Dickson 14 Games

Miles made his debut to Aussie Rules with the Tigers this year. What he lacked in skill Miles more than made up for with his tenacity. Miles is his own harshest critic, and has shown great improvement in his skills over the season.

#15 - Jake Egan 21 Games

Jake is another of the team who had his second year with us this year, and did a great job of building on excellent foundations set last year. Jake’s strength on the ball and running through or around packs mean he can be relied upon to play in any position. Jake also represented the Illawarra in the under 11’s Storm team during the Season.

#13 - James Highland 49 Games

James has carried on this year demonstrating his broad range of skills and great team spirit. James is a thinker, and despite being hampered by leg injuries, played on through the pain to be there for his team. James is also a bit of a sharp shooter, with a bag of 5 goals in one game alone and another game with 4. He also enjoyed participating in the Junior Swans Academy.

#11 - Matthew Kennedy 52 Games

Matt has continued from where he finished last season with great enthusiasm for his footy, which he shows on and off the field. 24 Northern Districts Tigers Junior AFC 2011 Yearbook

#19 - Harry O’Donoghue 37 Games

Harry has had another great year, playing hard all year where ever he was asked to go. Apart from being handy all around the field, Harry can lay claim to Mark of the Year, with an outstanding overhead mark while running backwards ( I hope Sally caught it on film).

#23 - Harrison Pryke 31 Games

Harrison was sorely missed when and the Pryke family took to the air for an extended family holiday in Europe. Harrison loves to hit the ball hard, turning defence into attack time and again. Harro also enjoyed time with the Junior Swans Academy.

#16 - Corey Schwarze 57 Games

Ever reliable you know you can trust Corey to go hard at the ball, or tackle hard if he gets to the ball second. Corey made the most of his height taking the majority of the hit outs through the season. Rucking and tackling are his trade marks, there is rarely a backward step from Corey. He also enjoyed his time with the Junior Swans Academy.

#8 - Liam Walsh 26 Games

Liam has really built well on the foundation he set last year. He is equally effective forward or back, always attacking the ball. A lot of the hard work Liam has put in came together as the season progressed, with a notable improvement in his skills. Liam showed his enthusiasm for the game backing up to play with the under 13’s on a couple of occassions.

#17 - Rachael Wardhaugh 18 Games

Rachel took to the field for her second season with us this year, continuing with her enthusiasm and commitment to the ball. Rachel is always in and around the pack, looking to feed a handball out to her team mates.

#21 - Shane Wilson 46 Games

Shane is one of our younger brigade, but what he gives up in size he more than makes up for in spirit. Shane always gets himself to the ball, earning many free kicks and often winning the hard ball.

Coach’s Report

The Under 13 Tigers for 2010 was a mixture of Under 12 and Under 13’s players. We lost a number of players from the previous season but we were able to replace them with a number of boys playing AFL for the first time.

We started the season in a Gala Day at Shellharbour winning 2 out of 3 games. It was most memorable for Nathan being knocked unconscious in his first ever game. It is a testament to his courage and persistence that Nathan went on to have a very fine season. This culminated in him being awarded the Development Trophy at the Illawarra Regional Awards. A great achievement in your first year Nathan, well done.

The normal season also started in ominous fashion when we were thrashed at Kiama without registering a score. I thought we were in for a very long season, but we bounced back quickly and managed to finish the year in second place. This was in part due to the development of our first year players.

Hamish had an interrupted season with injury but showed some great skill. He is a great team player and provides plenty of humour on the training track often putting the coach through a series of tough questions … a lawyer in the making.

Isaac had a great season doing a tremendous job in the ruck, probably the toughest position to play. Very shy at first but we managed to coax him out of his shell by season end. He was also a bit hampered by a foot injury but he always gave 100%.

Hayden showed ferocious attack on the ball and took some memorable marks throughout the season. Together with Louis they were two of our best players in the preliminary final. A great effort for boys playing in an age group above them.

26 Northern Districts Tigers Junior AFC 2010 Yearbook

Louis was a bit of a quiet assassin at training, doing some big hits, especially during the game of beach football.

Jack also had a great year, being a rock across the half back line and capping it off by winning an award for one of our best players in the preliminary final. It would be great to see all of these boys come back next year and build on what they have achieved in their first year.

We also had a number of experienced players who continue to develop. Tom had another good year, playing in the midfield. He picked up many possessions, but more importantly he always used the ball to the advantage of a teammate. Against his own age group next year I’m sure he will dominate.

Lachlan also played well, culminating on a best on ground performance out at Albion Park. His brother Josh got better as the season went on. He developed in to a very dangerous forward and kicked many goals, including three in the preliminary final. Congratulations on your Tiger Award, well deserved.

Jesse also had a different role this year. He took a little bit of time to get used to the role of centre half forward but had a great season. Highlights for Jesse include 8 goals against Bowral, 3rd in Illawarra league Best and Fairest, Leading Goal Kicker and selection in the Illawarra Storm Team. He probably would have finished higher in the Tigers B & F but the team manager refused to vote for him (I’ll be on to this next year).

Harry had another good year, playing mainly on the wing or the flanks where he had plenty of dash. This is pretty amazing given that he often was recovering from tour de France epics the day before on his bicycle.

Riley had a great year and deserved his Tigers award. He has great pace, plays with passion and was one of our best midfielders this year. He is a future coach, always giving me plenty of advice on how to coach every week. He keeps me on my toes but is a pleasure to coach.

Our backline was built around two of our toughest players, Shimon and Callum. Shimon was so tough he refused to get a midseason shark bite to his leg sutured until he became ill. A player who always runs straight at the ball, congratulations on a fine season.

Callum was like a Tasmanian tiger at training (rarely sighted) but was certainly prominent in our matches. He is probably the best full back in the league, but could also go in to the midfield to provide some strength in our clearances.

Cally as always was a coach’s dream. He is at the bottom of every pack and tackles ferociously. I’m yet to see a more committed player. His skills have also developed well. He missed a number of games with his Rugby commitments but still managed to place in the top ten of the League Best and Fairest and was selected in the Illawarra Storm Team.

We also missed Mitch in the early part of the season. He played more in the midfield and across halfback this year. His reading of the play is second to none. He had another great year being selected in the Illawarra Storm team, the Southern Sydney Pigeons team and the Sydney Swans Academy. Obviously we are not the only ones who recognise his ability. Well done Mitch.

Brendan continues to improve. He is a very dedicated trainer, and has always had very good skills but worked hard on improving his tackling and physical aspects of his game this year. He was consistently one of our best players and was rewarded with runner up in the best and fairest. He was also selected in the Illawarra Storm team. Congratulations on a fine season. Last but not least is Luke. Luke had his finest season yet, playing at centre half back or in the ruck. He has a great football brain, always delivers the ball well and is a great leader on the field. His best and fairest is well deserved, as he was consistently one of our best players. He was also selected in the Illawarra Storm team and finished in the Top 10 of the league best and fairest.

I would also like to thank all the parents. The behaviour of the parents, like the boys were exemplary. I would also like to thank the many who goal umpired, boundary umpired, worked in the canteen, ran water etc. It makes my job easier when we have a ready band of parents willing to contribute.

I would particularly like to thank Nick Price for his efforts as team manager and unofficial assistant coach. It was great having Nick organise all the administrative tasks so that I could concentrate on the football. He was well organised and did a splendid job. His help on the training track every night was also much appreciated.

27 Northern Districts Tigers Junior AFC 2010 Yearbook

We finished the season losing our two finals matches but the boys should be congratulated on their performance. It was great result for a team with many new players and many under age. I would be delighted to see them all back in a Tigers guernsey next season.

Regards

Coach’s Report

Season 2010 was a roller coaster ride of results, player availability and emotion. We had a great squad of 24 players, 14 were top age players( 11 of these returned from last year having experienced the heart ache of a great year but losing the grand Final by a single kick) and ten were 14 or younger.

An hour Before the first game in Kiama I noticed that the players sat in two distinct friendship circles ( one of 15’s and one of 14’s) and chatted. It was apparent to me that we had to mould two teams into one. The young men did bond at training and on game day to combine into a, positive, attacking and extremely competitive team.

We lost games which we should have won, played poorly at times and displayed glimpses of brilliance.

Every player kicked a goal during the year, every player contributed to a goal and every player helped stop many goals.

Thanks to Gary for all his hard work as manager, his humour, his calmness and friendship. Thanks to all the parents who assisted in running water and messages, goal umpiring, voting, first aid, lollies and positive vibes during the game and all the huddles.

I proudly will state that this premiership is the sweetest of ALL six which I have been involved in.

Coach’s Report

What a year! I think we registered three girls at the start of the year. We hadn’t the numbers to enter a team at the Gala Day and supplied two players to other teams on the day.

With a week to the start of the comp we didn’t know if we could make a team. But as the saying goes “start training and they will come” (or something like that). Sufficient to say we managed seven players at our first game borrowed three from our opponents (Kiama) and very nearly got the chocolates on the day.

At this point we were up and running and we gradually built up the team to an impressive 18 registered players. Girls’ Youth had five teams and the Tigers were determined to do more than make up the numbers.

Training was often a hilarious event as teenage (and some pre-teenage) girls got together for a social time. I would try to eke out a few minutes each week where we concentrated on the football and learnt the basics of kicking and handballing. In credit to the group, those skills improved week to week, and despite copping some hefty defeats to the top sides we kept improving.

With no wins on the board we came up against our first round victors (Kiama) again and the girls knew it was their chance. Playing with the confidence of winners the girls demonstrated all their skills and in the end we had our first win of the year and didn’t the Tigers song get a work out.

37 Northern Districts Tigers Junior AFC 2010 Yearbook

Next on the agenda was securing 4th spot on the table with Kiama and us on a win each and our third game washed out. The team plotted and targeted ourselves for the game against 3rd place Crows at home. Again the girls came out with all the confidence of winners and attacked incessantly and managed four behinds while the Crows had one forward surge for a goal. However, the girls persisted and fell out one point winners and 4th spot was secure. This was the highlight of the year. Although the Crows soundly defeated us in the final, we had earned the opportunity to play.

I was extremely proud of the girls who showed great development in their individual and team skills as the year progressed. There were some outstanding performances by all throughout the year.

Special mention to the six Tiger girls who this year represented NSW against ACT. What a fantastic opportunity and the girls should be very proud of their very significant achievement.

We struggled to match it with the top two teams who were physically quite intimidating to a team that was low in experience. This is understood at league level and will be addressed as the age for Girls’ Youth will come back one year in 2011.

The Girls’ Youth league is in its infancy and plenty of work is to be done in a number of areas to see its constant development. There is a lot of interest and high expectations that the competition could grow to eight teams in 2011.

I will have my hand up again for the coach’s role in 2011 and would like to thank Jeff Smith for his assistance in training this year. It made a world of difference using Jeff’s extensive general fitness and coaching experience.

All up, a great experience of which the girls and the club should take enormous pride.

Coach’s Report

The challenges of 2010 were met with strong dedication and expectation as the unknown of playing in the South Coast Junior AFL was to unfold. A six team competition quickly became four and Saturday fixtures became Sunday afternoon drives down the south coast.

As the travel took its toll on the team, a committed core group fronted up each and every week facing tough road trips with dwindling numbers to home games where the opposition would sooner forfeit than travel.

Some highlights:

• Defeating Ulladulla/Bay & Basin away in atrocious conditions as a game plan came to life.

• Having the prestige of giving Nowra/Bowral their first loss in one and a half seasons in a nail biter at Hollymount.

• The skill development and decision making of every footballer in the team.

• Having five players ‘debut’ in first grade.

Thanks go to parents for their ongoing support and time given to travel, Terry Ashton for managing the team and myself so wonderfully, my family for releasing me two days of footy a weekend and the players for their enthusiasm and commitment to training and to each other.
