Term 2 Week 3 May 18 2016 Contents Review weekly From The Principal From The Head of Sport From The Chaplain From the Principal From The Head of Performing Arts Reconciliation at Debating Treadmill for Sale On Tuesday of this week, all students and staff came together to acknowledge and celebrate Pulteney Grammar School’s commitment to reconciliation. We once again Year 8 Immunisations welcomed Kaurna elder Jack Buckskin, who is a wonderful teacher and guide, and we Futures heard presentations from students in Year 1 and Year 2, the School Captains and a MASA musical performance by Prep School students. Senior Sports Notices During the assembly, I was honoured to receive on behalf of the School a shield crafted by Jack. It comes from a River Red Gum adjacent to the School in the South Prep Sport Notices Parklands; many of our students have visited the “scar tree” in their explorations about Drama Production Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and culture. We look forward to the shield Nepal Fundraiser being shared with students in each of the sub-schools. Jack described the shield as a symbol of protection for all in our community and it is a tangible representation of our wonderful connection to the Kaurna people and their land.

Prep School The Value of Physical Wellbeing 8216 5544 The Winter sport season was certainly in full swing on Saturday. While I try to get out and see as much sport as possible each week, I do miss seeing some games. 2016 Meeting Dates

19 May 30 June 28 July From the Chaplain 18 August ‘Peace I leave with you’ John 14 6 October In John’s gospel reading this week in chapel, Jesus reassures the disciples with some 10 November amazing claims. He assures us that the Holy Spirit will be sent to continue his teaching through them. He tells them that he leaves his ‘peace’ with them. This is not a worldly peace. It is a peace that exists because of the presence of God in our lives. A peace that is possible because we love, we forgive and are reconciled, we are gracious and grateful. A peace that arises from our own trust and faith in God’s love. A peace that will leave our hearts untroubled and unafraid.

When Christians live the Risen Word of Christ, they move beyond the temptation to limit God’s word and presence to specific acts and places. The gospel is trying to communicate to us that it is we who become the dwelling place of God on earth. The way we choose to live our lives and relate to others will make God known to others. Save the Date Through us all people can come to know the unconditional love of God and the life giving power that comes with a Godly peace. Pulteney Tasting Evening Saturday 6 August The word of God is not simply spoken, it is love in action, love as a choice, love freely given to us that we freely give and receive in return. Basketball Pulteney 1st V drew with St Pauls 38 - 38 We entered the game with only six players and started slowly with our opponents scoring the first 9 points of the game. We were able to steady and reduced the deficit to 1 point at quarter time through some long range shooting from James Sibly. The second quarter was a tight tussle with Matt Neilson controlling the boards and Zac Sipek chipping in with a couple of timely baskets. The game opened up in the second half courtesy of Nick Golfis but this was countered by the loss of GeorgeAthanasas to injury leaving us with no fit people on the bench. We battled strongly and worked our way to an 8 point lead late in the last quarter only to see it quickly disappear as we failed to take our chances when they were presented. A draw was disappointing however there were many positives for us to work on for the coming season

Pulteney 2nd V defeated St Pauls 38 - 23 We started strongly on the back of some energetic work from Jack White who was driving strongly and moving the ball quickly from end to end. Cameron Horsell and Sam Heal were finding opportunities in offence and Matthew Rodda was giving us plenty around the key way. Angus Lumsden was again tidy around the basket and showed that he and Rodda will form a strong inside combination this season. As the game went on we steadily built our lead and this was highlighted by some scintillating driving and passing from Sath Sukumaran. A strong team effort with a promising season ahead. Pulteney 3rd V defeated St Paul’s 27 - 21 The boys got out to a quick start thanks to the run and carry of Daniel Bai and Maklan Ferguson, finishing the first quarter with a comfortable lead. St Paul’s managed to work their way back into the game due to a dry spell in our scoring. They continued to hang around pushing us to the final minutes, however it was our defence that won us the game. Samuel Bleby-Williams and Albert Gu brought down plenty of rebounds and Anthony Lucas was tough defensively, allowing us to get out on the break where most of our scores were coming from. Simon Huyhn showed great leadership controlling the tempo and making good decisions down the stretch. It was a hard fought first win showing plenty of potential for the season to come.

Pulteney 4th V defeated St Peters 30 - 8 The boys started the game off strong and maintained their intensity throughout the game. With only 5 players (down to 4 at the end) against a team of 10, they were able to run the floor non stop until the final buzzer. Their chemistry on the court was something i wasn’t expecting to see until later on down the track. I’m looking forward to seeing this group develop throughout the season. Special thanks to Jai Dahm for filling in, always welcome and thanks to the parents that came out to support the boys.

Pulteney Middle A’s defeated St Paul’s 69 - 31 The Middle A’s overcame a slow start to defeat St. Paul’s 69 - 31. There was a very even contribution by all the boys who suited up for the A’s this week, but Oliver Bishop with his intensity at the contest and Thomas Conroy almost scoring at will, the A’s really stamped their authority on the gam by the time the half time buzzer sounded. With what will be a very strong A’s and B’s squad this year, the boys put up a great performance to stake their claim for weeks to come. A great start by all involved!

Pulteney Middle B’s defeated St Paul’s 54 - 30 The Middle B boys had a great start to the season defeating St. Paul’s 54-30. An awesome first half set up the game for us perfectly with Matthew Beahan and William Rooke pulling down plenty of offensive and defensive rebounds, whilst Jesse Goodes got the score board ticking over, scoring the first 8 points of the game. We were able to maintain our intensity throughout the whole game coming out comfortable victors in the end. Great signs for the rest of the season to come.

Pulteney Middle C’s defeated by St Paul’s C 17 - 30. A decent start to the season by the boys against a team who had pulled a few players down from their B team due to the state championships and a lack of numbers. Especially since they were their main play makers. Overall a solid effort and I’m happy with how the team is shaping up for the rest of the season.

Pulteney Middle D’s were defeated by Saint Peters 9 - 45. It really was the tale of two halves for the Mighty Middle D’s this week. The boys had a late game at the 11:30 time slot, but we were caught still asleep in the first half as Saints pressure caused us to make mistakes handling the ball, and heading into half time it was 29 to 3. I’m not sure if the boys had their morning coffee’s at half time but we turned things around in the second half attacking the glass and boxing out on rebounds. No one highlighted this better than Dan Whitelock who boxed out a Saints boy who was taller than our coach. We also gained some offensive flow, sticking to our spacing which resulted in some coach-pleasing baskets to William Zhang, Dyllan Zhang and Riley Kopfstein. We also are starting to understand our zone defence which stopped Saints from scoring as prolifically in the second half. The second half score was 6-16 which I feel was a much more accurate representation of the effort the boys put in. Every player can hold their head high, as they did the jersey proud with their enthusiasm and determination to improve on Saturday.

Matt Down Basketball Coordinator Hockey Pulteney First XI defeated by Scotch College 3 - 14 A fast start from Pulteney saw the team 1-0 within the first two minutes and the their spirits were high. Unfortunately Pulteney, playing with only 10 players after losing seven players from last years First XI team, soon became tired and a stronger and well gelled Scotch College team took advantage of the situation. The First XI showed some great skills throughout the game and battled hard. The final score did not reflect the way the game was played. I look forward to seeing this team develop their skills during the season.

Goals: Callum Menadue (3)

Pulteney defeated by Scotch College 1 - 5 After a fantastic turn out, Pulteney Grammar’s Middle School hockey team started the season with a well fought match against rivals Scotch College. A fantastic goal was scored by Will Mahoney but unfortunately Scotch College came away with the win. The team is looking forward to playing them again later in the season.

Goals: Will Mahoney (1)

First XI: St Ignatius 12 defeated Pulteney 1 After a successful Anglican Cup winning all 3 games, on Saturday we came up against opponents who were represented by all club players.

Even though the score line represents a big loss, I was proud of the team for their endeavour to play to our structure and shape. The players not once gave up, as is the Pulteney spirit, finishing off the game with determination and willingness to improve.

Looking to our next game, each one is a test and hopefully the players can bounce back.

Lucas Pantelis First XI Coach/Director of Football

Second XI: St Ignatius College 13 defeated Pulteney 1 Goal scorer: Lloyd Pope

Special mentions: Lewis Suttie, Benjamin Cahill, Mitchell Bender

The boys worked hard against a quality opposition, but lost shape too easily, conceding too many times. With a focus on structure at training, our defence will improve, allowing more attacking options.

Third XI: Pedare CC 9 defeated Pulteney 0 It was a hard game to start the season with. The team played against a much bigger and organised side but it was pleasing to see the boys battle to the end. In the second half we only conceded 2 goals which showed the boys listened to instructions at half time. With a long road ahead, the boys kept their heads up and we will look forward to working hard at training, to improve our results.

Special mentions: Alistair Porter, Daniel Calderisi, Owen Moseby Middle A: Nazareth 8 defeated Pulteney 4 Goal scorers: Otis Noble 2, Henry Jorgensen 1, Dillon Hill 1

The Middles A’s battled hard against quality opposition, and while we scored a number of excellent goals, we couldn’t contain them and unfortunately went down 4-8. The entire team worked hard, with a number of players being forced to play in positions unfamiliar to them. Special mentions to Otis Noble, who scored a brace and looked dangerous up front, to Jun Kim for working incredibly hard in midfield, and to Lachlan Casey, who proved versatile and adaptable throughout.

Middle B: Concordia College 11 defeated Pulteney 0 All tried hard with no substitutes against a well organised team. More application at training and with better touch, our results will improve.

Year 7: Pulteney 8 defeated Woodcroft College 4 Goal scorers: Alex Symons 4, Zac Gillard 2, Finn Flanagan 1, Sam Tertipis 1

After a slow first half, we were behind 2-4, but the boys kept on trying and were able to turn the game around. This proves that if the boys don’t give up, then there is always a chance of winning.

Football

Congratulations to all our players for an excellent start to the season last Saturday.

As I have moved between all of our teams from Junior to Senior and talked to the coaches I have been impressed by the enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment that our students are getting from the training sessions.

The Pulteney football plan revolves around organisation and preparation, good coaches, relevant training drills and a desire to play with passion and enjoyment.

The process to lift the profile of football will take time but I have been heartened by the number of parents who have emailed and spoken to me in support of the program.

Coaches from Saturday all had some very positive comments to make and constructive suggestions of how they can work on game plans and areas of skill development for the different teams.

After a lot of hard work it was very pleasing to see that for the first time for a number of years we are fielding a 2nd XVIII as a curtain raiser to the 1st XVIII nearly every Saturday.

The 1st XVIII under Barrie Bryan have been working hard since mid November so it was good to see that they got off to a good start on Saturday against AC.P

Anglican Cup Pulteney’s First XVIII Football Team completed a long and successful pre-season campaign by being victorious in all three Anglican Cup games last week.

Although there was a sense that all games were close and hard-fought our goals for (22) compared to our goals against (8) for the day suggest that Pulteney was in fact the dominant team.

Not coincidentally following our strong pre-season training, Pulteney was able to wear the opposition down to finish full of running in all three games.

It was very pleasing to see the Pulteney team playing an attacking brand of football whilst at the same time maintaining disciplined, defensive structures.

Congratulations to all 29 players who represented Pulteney on the day; all players contributed (in many and various ways) to the team’s success.

Our leading goal-kickers for the day were Lachlan Schatto and Jack White (3 each) and our best players included Ben Adams, Liam Geddes-Ryan, Nick Laity, Sam Magarey, Chester Oliver, Adam van den Munckhof and Jack White.

Congratulations also to Ben Adams who has been named as the First XVIII Captain for 2016 and to Angus Sexton, Jack White and Josh Wills who are his deputies.

Barrie Bryan Coach

1st XVIII PGS 23:16 (154) defeated PAC3 2:4 (16) Congratulations to Edward Knights, Nick Laity, Sam Magarey, Chester Oliver, Tom Rundle and Lachlan Schatto, who all made their First XVIII debuts and who all contributed to the overall team result.

To kick more than 20 goals (and to win by more than 20 goals) at any level of Football, is a good effort; to do this and to have 39 scoring shots in only 80 minutes, deserves even more credit.

As was the case in the Anglican Cup, I was very pleased with the spread of goal-kickers today (11 goal-kickers); successful teams need a variety of goal-kicking options so it was pleasing to see the goals spread amongst our midfielders and forwards. The more goal-scoring options we can have, the more difficult it will be for an opposition team to shut us down.

Testament to the team’s fitness and further reward for the hard work throughout the pre-season, 15 of the 23 goals were scored in the second half; never underestimate the importance of fitness in that it enables individuals and teams to run harder for longer, and also to execute skills with greater efficiency for longer periods.

Defensively, the team was also very good today. For much of the game PAC weren’t able to penetrate our half-back line (they only scored goals in 1 of the 4 quarters and were held scoreless in 2 of the 4 quarters) and on many occasions we were able to run the ball from half-back to set up goal scoring opportunities.

The team was very strong across all areas of the field today:

• our hard-working and hard-running midfielders, led by Jack White, BenAdams, Liam Geddes-Ryan and Nick Laity

• our goal-scoring forwards namely Jarrod Miller, Tom Rundle, Lachlan Schatto and Josh Wills

• our ruckmen: Matt Nielsen, Tom Baldock and Angus Sexton

• and our defenders led by Sam Magarey, Angus Lumsden and Tom Rundle

Best Players: Jack White, Ben Adams, Liam Geddes-Ryan, Sam Magarey, Nick Laity, Jarrod Miller, Matt Nielsen, Josh Wills, Angus Lumsden, Tom Rundle

Goal-Kickers: Jarrod Miller 4, Tom Baldock, Liam Geddes-Ryan. Nick Laity 3 each, Matt Nielsen, Lachlan Schatto, Josh Wills 2 each, Rory Egarr, Alex Jorgensen, Tom Rundle, Zac Sipek 1 each.

Barrie Bryan Coach 2nd XVIII PGS 3:3 (21) defeated by PAC4 14:19 (103) Saturday represented the start of a new era for Pulteney by again having a second XVIII to represent the school. This fact did not go unnoticed by the wider Pulteney Community with many messages of support being received from interstate and across the world. Old Scholar and current Sydney Swans Assistant Coach even sent a personal video message to the boys wishing them the best.

If we were to measure the success of the weekend solely by the scoreboard you would be forgiven for thinking the day did not go so well, but we don’t, and the game was a success on so many levels.

Our focus was on our desire to compete, stay in the contest with second and third efforts and to have an aggressive attack on the football at all times.

Our ability to do this as a team was demonstrated best in the third quarter when for the first ten minutes despite having two fewer players on the field we were able to lock the ball in our forward half. Through our pressure we forced our opposition to fumble, miss kicks and panic in general play.

While every member of the team played their part I wish to make special mention of three players.

Our ruckman Sam Bleby-Williams whose willingness to continually get under the ball, put his body on the line against much bigger opponents and neutralise the ruck contests was a wonderful demonstration of his courage. Also his smother in the first quarter exemplified his and the team’s commitment to compete and always remain in the contest.

Arthur Blunt may be small in stature but his willingness to chase and harass had many opposition players making mistakes, sometimes from the perceived pressure he put on them.

Jack Evans’ willingness to follow instruction and adjust his game style during the game was most pleasing. Coming off the line at centre bounces and hitting the ball at full speed with a kamikaze like approach was noticed by many on the sideline including the opposition coach. It also had many opposition players looking over their shoulder.

Year 8/9 PGS 27:14 (176) defeated Scotch2 0:0 (0) What a start to the 2016 season for the year 8/9 football team. With only about half the team having trained in the last month or so it was pleasing to fill almost every position on Saturday and for the boys to put in such a dominant performance.

Whilst every player put in a stellar performance, the best were Griffin Evans, Liam Creaser, Connor Schatto, Wayne Inglis, Hugh Heidenreich and Thomas Lawrence- Doyle. Goal kickers were Connor 9, Wayne 5, Liam 4, William Craddock 2, Jack Strawbridge 1, Alex Magarey 1, Calvin Santo 1, Hugh.H 1, Hugh Radbone 1, Henry Bleby-Williams 1 with special mention to Jack Strawbridge for filling in on the day and kicking a goal.

We hope to see everyone out at training and if anyone is interested in being part of the team, please come out to training on Monday and Wednesday after School. Go Pulteney!

Nathan Risatano & Justin Bollenhagen Coaches

Year 6/7 PGS 2:0 (12) defeated by Pembroke 13:13 (91) Credit where credit is due: in our first game for the year we were beaten by a very good Pembroke team.

Also, we must acknowledge that we have a number of players who are still learning how to play the game and learning what to do in specific situations. Despite all of that, there were a number of things that I was pleased with; these included:

• we didn’t concede any more than 4 goals in any one quarter (3 in the first, 4 in the second, 3 in the third and 3 in the last)

• the team kept trying until the very end and kicked 1 goal to 3 in the last quarter

• Rory played very well, both at Centre Half Back and in the midfield, and provided us with plenty of drive all day

• Matt Adams played very well, particularly when moved to Centre Half Back and took some strong marks

• Gabriel Luksich battled hard in the ruck for almost the entire game

• Seb Brett worked hard and picked up plenty of possessions

• Angus Winter tried to provide some ‘run’ for the team and kicked our first goal for the season

Best Players: Rory O’Callaghan, Matt Adams, Gabriel Luksich, Seb Brett, Angus Winter

Goal Kickers: Angus Winter and Rory O’Callaghan (1 each)
