HAKEA HOUSE Term 1 has seen students in Hakea House settling into their studies eagerly and productively. There has been a strong and happy community feeling in the House, with our senior student leaders beginning work in their new roles, and students and teachers getting into the business of teaching/ learning together.

Our Year 7 students have made a smooth transition, with teachers enthusiastically reporting students engaging well in lessons. Students have so far participated in: school swimming sports – where they were well represented; the PE Swimming program; as well as the year 7 Sports day – a fun day had for all. In Term 2, Year 7 students will have the opportunity to attend a camp to Phillip Island. This is an adventurous camp, where students get the chance to challenge themselves and make new friends from across the Houses. We encourage all students to attend for what will be a memorable time for all.

SRC elections took place early in the term with the following students chosen by their peers as the Hakea SRC Leaders: Yr7 - Medina E; Yr8 – Amelia N; Yr9 – Vanchica P; Yr10 Miodrag K; Yr11 Terisa P; and Yr12 Poojana S. The SRC have begun planning their 2018 and organising some fun fund-raising activities for their charity of choice. Watch out for these activities and make sure you bring your ideas to the SRC reps to have your say in Hakea House and at DHS.

A highlight for Hakea House this term was winning second place in the Swimming Carnival – go Hakea! It was a fun day for everyone, with our students dressing up to represent Hakea House in their fnest yellow. We look forward to another great day for the Athletics Sports coming up later in Term 2.

The Hakea House Leadership team, teaching and support staf, wish our families the very best for the term 1 break. We hope you all enjoy the break and family time together.

A second letter has been sent home with a payment form for any students still wishing to attend. Students that have already committed to the camp need to return their Medical form, including any dietary requirements, asap.

The camp is a wonderful opportunity for students to continue building strong bonds with their peers in their house and a chance to form friendships with students from across the other houses in the school.

The focus for the camp is on students continuing their transition from Primary into and giving students a safe environment to socialise through team building and adventurous group activities.

Please contact Mr Beattie (Camp Leader) in Callistemon if you have any questions.

The Vernier Society and the Vernier Foundation

The Vernier Society was formed in 1942 by the leaders of Melbourne Manufacturing sector to assist the increase armament production in support of the escalating war in the north. At the end of the war, the members decided to continue the Society as a monthly meeting to network, share fellowship and promote manufacturing as the major contributor to the Australian economy. 76 years on, the Society is still in existence as a fellowship for all those who believe passionately in a vibrant manufacturing sector.

Many outside manufacturing may struggle to even pronounce the name “Vernier” let alone understand its origins back to a 16th century French inventor of a scale, or to be precise two interacting scales, which two centuries later became the ubiquitous ‘Vernier’ used in every engineering workshop for precision measurement. To the Society, ‘Vernier’, is a symbol of professionalism, tradition and continuance.

The Vernier Foundation was formed in 2000 after a generous company donation to the Society to create a Charitable Trust with the specifc purpose of “Fostering research investigation, study and analysis into engineering manufacturing in ”. The trustees focused on the ‘study’ of engineering, recognising that a passion for engineering and manufacturing is best created in schools. In the initial years, the Foundation ran a very successful annual school’s competition for budding engineers in years 6 to 8 to build working electro-mechanical models. In recent years, the Foundation has turned its attention to holding an annual Youth Forum in August, to promote engineering as a career. Comparing the success of German and Australian education systems to underpin their manufacturing sector and engineering careers in aerospace and deep space, are but two of the recent forums that have captured an enthusiastic audience.

STEM (Science/Technology/Engineering and Mathematics) in schools is intrinsic in the Foundation’s charter and over the last two years, the Foundation has also developed its “STEM Collaboration Program”; frst with Dandenong High School and then with Peninsula Grammar School in Mount Eliza. The Collaboration is a 3-year relationship program that aims to embrace, not just fnancial support for the school’s Robotics and Systems Engineering projects but presenting individual awards for attaining students; arranging site visits to leading manufacturing companies, providing specialist speakers and in the future, creating work experience and career pathways.

The Foundation funds are limited and can only fund the addition of a third school in 2018 but is currently in negotiation with other organisations to increase funding and support for more schools. Vernier welcomes interest, support and donations from anyone who shares the belief that a strong engineering and manufacturing focus, in schools and in the community is essential to a strong economy.

Audi Work Inspiration

14 year 10 students were incredibly fortunate to spend two days at AUDI in Brighton for the Work Inspiration program. During the two days, students were able to experience marketing, sales, mechanical, fnance, HR and so many more areas of this prestigious organisation.

Students also designed and presented their own ideas on how to better market AUDI with a young person’s perspective. A highlight of the two days was seeing a top of the line $400,000 AUDI going through its paces. AUDI made special comment on the outstanding behavior of these students and congratulated them on their high level of engagement and outstanding ideas for marketing.

Experiences such as this in a professional corporate environment help young people to begin to make sense of their own career goals and the future world of work. Congratulations to all the participants.
