True colours!

A litle while ago, some parishioners asked us what the liturgical colours mean and when do we ‘change colours’. A good queston, so here are some answers:

The church year begins on the frst Sunday in Advent and ends on the feast of Christ the King. Through the year, the liturgical colours (of our stoles and hangings) change from purple, to while/gold, to red and eventually to green. I have set out a table below which will give you an indicaton of the changing church seasons.

Purple is the colour of royalty to welcome the coming of a King. It also evokes pain and sufering. It is used for Advent and Lent to symbolize both the impending birth of Jesus and foreshadowing his death.

White or Gold symbolize purity, holiness, and virtue, as well as respect and reverence. White or Gold is used for all high Holy Days and festval days of the Church Year, especially the seasons of Christmas and Easter, as well as for baptsm, marriage, dedicatons, and the ordinaton of ministers.

Red is the colour of fre and so symbolizes the presence of God. It is the liturgical colour for Pentecost. It is considered the colour of the Church, since red can also symbolize the blood of martyrs. It is used for Maundy Thursday and during Holy Week. It is also used to commemorate special days for martyrs or saints.

Green symbolizes the renewal of vegetaton and generally of living things and the promise of new life. It is used for the Season of Epiphany between Transfguraton Sunday and the beginning of Lent, and for the tme between Trinity Sunday (frst Sunday afer Pentecost) and the beginning of Advent.
