he awards night for Australia’s Champion Racehorse of the Year 2006 was held in Melbourne on the 2nd of August T2006. Executive members of Principal Racing Authorities and members of the Australian Racing Writers Association vote for the awards, with Makybe Diva being crowned “Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year” for the second year running after winning her third Melbourne Cup. The great mare also claimed the “Champion Stayer” and “Champion Middle Distance Racehorse” awards along with being voted the “Most Popular Racehorse”.

NATIONAL CONTROL OF PROHIBITED SUBSTANCES To ensure that’s its racing is clean and fair, Australian Racing maintains a strict policy on the control of prohibited substances in racehorses. During 2005 the four Ofﬁcial Racing Laboratories, in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth analysed some 42,643 that had, under exacting procedure and security processes, been taken for racehorses.

CLASSIFICATIONS

▪ The 2004/05 ratings were the last where by fillies and mares are rated at the same level as their male competitors. As of the 2005/06 racing season, Australia will adopt the international rating standard where by fillies and mares weight for age allowance will not be included within the ratings. Ie 5 points less. ▪ The Australia-New Zealand Classifications represents, on an annual basis by way of an agreed criteria, the assessments of the quality performers from the Australasian thoroughbred racing season. ▪ For consideration a horse must have won or been placed to sixth in a Group event or won a listed race in Australia, New Zealand or another performance worthy of inclusion. ▪ The weight allotted each horse represents an assessment for a race within the indicated distance range at the end of the racing season in July

The ANZ Classiﬁcations are an accurate tool in comparing the merits of horse’s performances over time. From season 2000/01 onwards the weights of those horses listed have been aligned with those weights of the other age categories and weights prior to this season have been retrospectively adjusted in the list below. From 1st August 2005, Australia adopted the international standard in rating ﬁllies and mares and no longer add a sex allowance of 5 rating points to their ratings.
