Players like Johan Cruyff, Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten and Dennis Bergkamp, and more recently Ruud van Nistelrooy, Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie, have long set a standard for exciting, creative play. In the 1980's and '90's The Netherlands provided the soccer world with entertaining teams and players. Recent Dutch soccer success includes semifinal appearances at the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 and 2004, a quarter final appearance in the 2008 European Championships, as well as reaching the Round of 16 at the 2006 World Cup, and the Dutch national team is usually always in the top 10 in the FIFA World Rankings. The on-field success of Dutch soccer is mirrored by the world-renowned KNVB coaching Academy. At its foundation stands Rinus Michels, the man who "invented" Total Soccer in the '70s. His ideas are the basis of this camp. Small Nation, Great soccer vision The Netherlands is small in size, but Dutch soccer is famous around the world. For the past 30 years the Dutch have played a vital role in international soccer. The national team has recorded astonishing successes in the European Championship and World Cups. The top Dutch soccer clubs have shown well in every major European Cup competition, while Dutch players have long filled the rosters of the most popular European clubs. -

They’re footballers, all un- der 23, and about to hit the big time. By the time you read this, they will be at the London 2012 Olym- pic Games. For the first time in 20 years, Egypt has qualified a team. Cue the publicity machine. Cue the photographer’s studio, the stylists, and the interviews-on-couch- es. Representatives from Vodafone, the main sponsor of the Olympic football team, are on hand to steer the players through Mthese hoops. They’re used to this, as Vodafone has been one of the main sponsors of the game since the telecom company launched in Egypt in 1998. They’re ready for the big-time. -

Number #9 in the TDF Top 50
From being a small boy, I have always been a huge fan of both football and professional wrestling and at around the age of 10-years-old, I came across a monthly magazine brought to newsagents from the makers of the world famous Sports Illustrated all about pro wrestling. It was simply named Pro Wrestling Illustrated. It was a publication I regularly read as well as Shoot and Match weekly magazines to feed my football addiction. In 1991, PWI began this new craze that instantly grabbed my attention more than no other magazine had before. They revealed the 'PWI 500'. The 'PWI 500' section in the magazine listed (in rank order) the top 500 professional wrestlers in the world that year. Counting down from 500, this revealed to me many, many talents that I have not discovered as of yet. This was released every year, and still to this day is the best selling edition of the magazine each year. I studied and read and read over and over again that edition in 1991 and I came up with an idea. What if Match or Shoot revealed the top 500 footballers in the world? Thinking back to 1991, I used to love to tune into the 'BBC Radio 1 Top 40' show every Sunday afternoon too... maybe I'm a tad obsessed with countdowns. Anyways, reflecting on the idea, I thought about it each year the 'PWI 500' was released. As years went on, I felt that this would have grown into a hugely successful plan, gaining great recognition with people in the game, possibly gained its own award ceremony on TV with the emergence and exposure SKY Television in the United Kingdom was just beginning to give to the game back then. -
