Zeta Xi Psi The best news I have for the month is the very nice Mexican Fiesta Party we held on Thursday, Eta Omicron Omega st Theta Pi October 1 at Ellen Costigan’s home on Perdido Bay. It could not have been a more perfect night with a full moon, light breeze, delicious food, and drink, and of course the best company in the world: Navy Yacht Club Folks! We had about 30 people who were able to attend. Some braved the traffic jams all the way from Gulf Breeze and Garcon Point, as well as those whose trip across the Lillian Bridge involved about an hour delay. But the Party was a wonderful opportunity to see people for the first time in many months and enjoy catching up. Our next gathering will again be at Ellen’s home (Thank You, Ellen!!) on October 29 at 1800. I saw a sign on a church billboard that read “2020 – the Year of the Elevator”. I guess with all the ups and downs of Covid19 and Hurricane Sally…it truly is an elevator year!

Many of us prepared for a storm, a Category 1 system with wind and storm surge of 2 to 4 feet, but on the evening of September 15th into the early morning hours of September 16th, 2020 Hurricane Sally grew in her anger and direction. Making landfall as a Category 2 storm (1mph less than being classified as a Category 3 storm) and with storm surge increase of 5 to 7 feet.

Bayou Grande Marina’s Crow’s Nest area took a beating. She took the same path that Hurricane Ivan took 16 years ago on the same date and time of day. Wow! (Ironically, Hurricane Ivan was the first storm my mom, brother and nephew experienced. And coincidently my father’s name was Ivan and his mother (my grandmother) was named Sally. Amazing.)

As we gather strength and push through recovery from the storm I wanted to share some of the images and see some of status of our community.

Stay safe, stay strong!

Hurricane Sally has come and gone, but she left her on NAS Pensacola. We wanted to let you know that the museum weathered the storm well with no major structural damage to the building or the aircraft displayed outside. The torrential rain did cause a number of roof leaks in our buildings, including the spaces in which we house our small artifacts. However, our operations/maintenance and curatorial teams went into action quickly and have the situation well in hand. As of this morning, power has been restored to the museum. While our planned Phase 1 reopening to active duty personnel and dependents has been delayed, we look forward to taking that step as soon as possible.

Another crew member Lorette Medwell went to Idaho to escape the storm.

th 58 Navy Cup

58th Anniversary of the NAVY CUP will be CANCELLED this year and Postponed to 2021

Our hope was that the Coronavirus Pandemic would soon be over and we could look to the future of returning to the activities we loved to do. Please advise your advertising contacts that we will not be putting together a brochure for this year due to the uncertainties of the COVID-19 status on all of us, but the Navy Yacht Club will be planning on returning to the Navy Cup Brochure for the 2021 Navy Cup Event.

We will Need YOUR HELP in getting advertisements for our 2021 Navy Cup Brochure which helps to cover our costs in putting on the regatta event – these costs include safety set-ups, sanitizers, food, trophies, equipment, facilities, etc. In addition, funds secured by the brochure also help support our Dan Smith Memorial Youth Sailing Scholarships (in helping get our youth out on the water in a safe and healthy environment) and the W.A.V.E. Day on the Bay sailing events for veterans.

Make note of the businesses you frequent online or in person (especially a business that provided service during all of our coronavirus conditions) that may be interested in advertising in our brochure for next year – please send them by mail or email the information invoice flyer for advertising (which can be found below or on our website) or contact one of the members of the Navy Cup Brochure Committee with your business contact information and we will be happy to reach out to that business in the future.

This year will be an unusual and historic year for our club and the nation…so mark your calendars and make plans to keep informed of all the upcoming information about our Navy Yacht Club activities.

Go Navy Yacht Club!

Thanks to everyone for your contributions! They help keep our organization and its mission alive.

Patriot arrives at the American team base in Auckland's Wynyard Quarter. Defiant rests uncovered to Patriot's left. The Emirates Team New Zealand base is visible at the top left. American Magic/Will Ricketson

New York Yacht Club American Magic, a Challenger for the 36th America’s Cup, took delivery of its second AC75 racing yacht at its Auckland base on Friday, September 4th, 2020. The yacht is named Patriot, and will succeed the team’s current AC75, Defiant.

American Magic is expected to use the new boat to compete in three upcoming regattas: America’s Cup World Series Auckland (December 17-20, 2020), the (the Challenger Finals, January 15- February 22, 2021), and the 36th America’s Cup Presented by Prada (March 6-21, if the team wins the Prada Cup).

The team has sustained an aggressive pace of operations during the current America’s Cup cycle. American Magic was the first to launch a full-size test boat, “the Mule,” in October 2018. Eleven months later, they were the first to sail and foil on an AC75 shortly after launching Defiant. With Patriot being the first “second generation” Challenger AC75 to arrive in Auckland, American Magic will now look to maximize testing time on the water prior to the opening regatta.

Excerpt from Sailing World/Will Ricketson

Just 3 months until the start of racing…

Did you know that out of our 830+ certified race officials only 19.5% are women?

Did you also know that for the first time in US Sailing history, four key committees in Race Administration (Race Management; Judges; Umpires; Classifiers) are chaired by female certified race officials?

Not everyone is inclined to be a racing sailor, but every racing sailor needs the support of many to ensure that the competitive side of sailing happens. Where do those folks come from to fill those supporting roles? Here are some examples………

Back in the early days of my sailing career, my parents joined a local sailing club. My dad was a club racer while my mom was definitely not. In fact, sailing was not her gig though she would put on her game face to go cruising with us on a friend’s schooner for a week or two during the summer making sure we were clean and fed, but never once did she trim a sail or hoist a halyard. With everyone in the house an active racer, she decided that she wanted to get involved somehow – first by volunteering for onshore registration, and then onto the committee boat writing down finishers, hoisting flags, keeping time. She became part of the important network of race administration volunteers that form the backbone of regatta support. The added benefit to her was that as she watched sailboat racing, she learned a lot about the tactics and strategy – enough to question our on-water decisions when we arrived home at the end of the day!

Family members and significant others of avid racers/sailors of any gender are prime candidates to become active in race administration whether as on shore support as equipment inspectors, registration folks, measurers, and protest committees, or on the water as race officers, judges, umpires and race management support. Racing sailors who want to "up their game" while giving back to the sport make excellent judges and umpires. Folks who enjoy the intricacies of numbers and details of boats and their builds can become great measurers and equipment inspectors. Young sailors who feel that the racing side of sailing is not their strength but want to stay active in the sport can make a niche for themselves through race administration - and the list goes on.

US Sailing is committed to increasing the number of trained race officials through the quality and integrity of our training and education programs. We also are committed to increasing the number of women who are active in race administration across the various disciplines as we strive for more gender equity in the sport. This aligns with our DEI strategy and with best practices. For the first time, we will be hosting some single gender race administration courses for women (taught by female instructors) starting with a Basic Race Management Seminar in the new online format. Look for this course to be posted on the calendar soon!

TOGETHER WE ACHIEVE great things, and by increasing participation by and certification of women in race administration, we will set the bar even higher.

Join us on this journey!
