Dear Friends,

Certainly never a dull moment in our beautiful land — what with the Gulf, drought, elections, summer in winter — things are really topsy turvy. Gone are the days when I wanted to tell you about the "special" deals and "weekends" to Europe, Turkey, Cyprus, etc. Nowadays there are so many and they are so varied, it is only a matter of deciding where and, of course, if the bank account allows. Advance Notice: We are pleased to inform you that we are once again operating tours led by Brenda Miller. Brenda's music tours are a once in a lifetime experience, many people who have aready traveled with her can testify — simply unforgettable! April - 14 days - Russia June - 8 days - Prague September - 10 days - Paris Call Ilanit at (03)548-8111 to secure your place.

Arthur Judes has left our office after eight years of service to many of you. I want to thank him for his loyalty, dedication, and wish him success in his new endeavours. Orith, Einat and Nili will be happy to assist you with all your travel needs. Please give us a call. Thanks for the continual support and I wish you all a great 1999.

Best Regards,

Terry Kessel Managing Director CONTENTS SETTINCTHESTAdE

December 1998 — Student hunger strikes, protests, sit-ins, road blocs. Hmmm. What year is this, you ask yourself, shades of 1968? No, and the re-enactment is perhaps less dramatic, but the simmering on the surface of Israel's once placid student life looks about to boil over. Older, post-army students who have to work to maintain themselves were regarded as no real threat to mainstream politics, but that now seems to be changing. Telfed Magazine spoke with some university students about the strike and its ramifications. David begins by offering a little background to the strike. "About six months ago students felt the

Personal Reflections on Reverend Isaac Pakter "Nachamu, Nachamu." "Comfort ye, comfort..." The first words of my Barmitzvah Haftorah and the words that heralded each meeting with Reverend Isaac Pakter who passed away peacefully on Hoi Hamo'ed Pesach, at the age of 79. Reverend Pakter, who was bom in Lithuania and came to South Africa at the age of 13, was much more than a Barmitzvah teacher to me — he was my rabbi, teacher and an example of how to live a well-rounded life. He instilled in me, and in many other boys, the joy of leading the congregation as a Ba 'al Tefillah. As a choirboy, I would listen to his high tenor voice blending harmoniously with the choir led by Mr. Katzen. And in between, with his characteristic energy, he would deliver beautiful sermons with passion and wit, utilizing his broad and deep knowledge of Jewish and general sources. Seuda Shlishit would be filled with Zemirot and expouding on one of his favorite subjects, Pirkei Avot. He immersed himself in every aspect of Shul activity, from the social and mundane to the spiritually sublime. This was a prime factor in the growth of the communities which he led. At my Bar Mitzvah, he described God denying Moses' wish to accompany the children of Israel into the Promised Land. His message was that completing your mission, fulfilling your dreams is not the essence. The main thing is to make your best effort, with total commitment. Yet Reverend Pakter did fulfill his dreams. He preached Zionism and made aliyah after a full career as spiritual leader of Caledon, Stellenbosch, Wynberg and Camp Bay communities. Wherever I bumped into him, he would take me by the arm and confront me with a question on ethics or comment with passion on local politics. He stressed the importance of family and was surrounded by an unually special one. Their care for one another is an inspiration to all of us who know them. As with all of his congregants, he remained interested in my progress. Just two weeks before he died, I met him at his grandson s Barmitzvah. He told me his thoughts on the apparently superfluous word, Mimcha. added to God's command to bring sacrifices to the temple. "Not superfluous," he said. Giving has to come from within your heart. In order tohave true value, anything you do has to be done with commitment, with all your soul." This is the way Reverend Pakter lived his life. Nachamu, Nachamu. His dear famly and the many people who were touched by him will be comforted by the blessing of his wisdom, care and modesty, his humour and energy and all that he gave to us. Richard Shavei Tzion
