Murder Ballads The Basics Time Required 8-10 class periods Subject Areas 8th Grade Literature Worlds Meeting through 1760 Skills Song analysis Author Ann Blake (2011) The Lesson Introduction Concurrently with our study of Romeo and Juliet, my class reads poems on the topics of love and death. In place of some of the poems I now use, I will substitute a unit on American murder ballads, focusing on those that have a love element. After a brief introduction to the history and conventions of the ballad, a type of narrative poetry, we will look at three sets of ballads. The first set, “The Cruel Ship’s Carpenter,” “Pretty Polly,” and “The Willow” will help illustrate the process of transmission and the role of traditional literature in reflecting cultural attitudes. The second set, “Frankie and Johnny” and “Tom Dooley,” will illustrate the role of ballads in providing commentary on actual events. The third set, “Zeb Turney’s Gal” and “The Martins and the Coys,” will look at the difference between ballads that have been shaped by the folk process as opposed to those that have a popular origin and outsider’s perspective. Learning Objectives Students will understand that many American ballads are descendants of English ballads, that the ballads preserve many aspects of the originals but also are changed by the process of oral transmission and by the changing environment in which the song is transmitted. There is a long tradition of murder ballads, and many people must agree with Edgar Allan Poe that the death of a beautiful woman “is, unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world,” since women are so often the victims in these ballads. -

Scope and Content The collection contains sound recordings and photographs made by Anne and Frank Warner that document musicians and storytellers from numerous traditions. The materials were collected during field trips to Illinois (1941), Massachusetts (1941), Missouri (1941), New Hampshire (1940-1941), New York (1939-1941, 1946, 1949-1952, 1961, 1969), North Carolina (1938-1941, 1944, 1951, 1959),Vermont (1940), and Virginia (1940). The collection focuses on the extended Hicks family living on or near Beech Mountain, North Carolina. The family's song and story repertory, and its dissemination by the Warners, played a significant role in the folk revivals of music (1960s) and storytelling (1970s). -

Bush (guest post)* Tom Dula Original label The Kingston Trio It is one of the great surprises (some might say flukes) of popular music: a simple two- chord song about a confederate veteran named Tom Dula who stabbed his cheating girlfriend, Laura Foster, in a jealous rage and was hanged in Statesville, North Carolina, in 1868, igniting the great Folk Music Revival of the late 50s and early 60s. While the song is credited to numerous sources, including old time banjoist Frank Proffitt, and even his Aunt Nancy Prather, the song has its origins in North Carolina in the late 1860s and maybe even earlier. Even more unlikely, the song propelled three newly-graduated college students into international stardom, the likes of which was matched only by the Beatles years later. The song, of course, was “Tom Dooley” recorded by The Kingston Trio--Dave Guard, Nick Reynolds and Bob Shane--who quickly became one of America's most popular and influential folk music groups. Guard and Shane were born in Hawaii and met at Honolulu's pricey Punahou School, which later became Barrack Obama's alma mater. Reynolds was born in San Diego, the son of a Navy Captain, and raised across the bay in Coronado, California. Shane and Reynolds would meet in 1955 at Menlo School of Business Administration, near Stanford where Dave Guard was a business major. Soon the three came together in various trio and quartet permutations, and eventually evolved into the Kingston Trio. -

Three case studies – Mamie Smith, the Carter Family, and Leadbelly – address trends in academic folk music scholarship that juxtaposed an initial rise in a commercial music culture that began with early 1920s race recordings and culminates in the folk-revival in the post-WWII period. -
