McDermott wouldn’t speculate on whether the Bills would have kept Taylor had he not agreed to restructure his contract by saying the team never reached that point in its decision-making process. Taylor even questioned his future in Buffalo once Ryan was fired and the starter was benched for the Bills season finale against the New York Jets. Buffalo did briefly explore at least one other option at quarterback by having pre- liminary talks with eight-year journeyman Brian Hoyer on Wednesday, according to a person familiar with the dis- cussions. The person spoke to The Associated Press because the sensitive nature of talk and because the Bills did not dis- close their plans. The Bills’ interest in Hoyer, however, ended with Taylor’s decision to rework his contract. Under the initial contract extension, Taylor was due to be paid just under $31 million in salary and bonuses during the first year of the deal, and count nearly $16 million against Buf- falo’s salary cap. DALLAS (AP) — Bruce Irvin’s first payday in free agency C M wasn’t anywhere near what Oakland will have to offer to keep Y K pass-rushing teammate and two-time All-Pro Khalil Mack. The former first-round pick by Seattle qualifies as a high-value contributor just the same for a franchise that made the playoffs for the first time in 14 years. While quarterback Derek Carr and Mack got most of the head- “LUMANA’I BUILDING” lines — and Carr’s broken leg late in the regular season domi- nated the talk before and after a wild-card loss to Houston — the 29-year-old Irvin positioned himself to become quite a bargain if he finishes his current deal. “I know I’m very capable of doing a lot of stuff,” said Irvin, who has 29 sacks in five seasons. “If they need me to spy, I’ll spy. If they need me to rush, I’ll rush. Any way I can help I’ll do it.” Here’s a look at other high-value free agents from last year as teams start wrapping up what they hope will be similar bargains in 2017 as free agency opens Thursday: LOW-COST NO. 1: Receiver Rishard Matthews led Tennessee with 945 yards receiving and nine touchdowns, and the 27-year- old tied Pro Bowl tight end Delanie Walker for the team lead with 65 catches. That career season came after signing a $15 million, three-year deal. Matthews was a seventh-round pick by Miami in 2012 and was coming off career highs of 43 catches for 662 yards and four TDs in 2015. Titans general manager Jon Robinson said the key to finding bargains often starts with a receiver’s film. “Maybe he’s getting open a lot, but the quarterback’s not getting the ball to him. Maybe the quarterback just doesn’t have time to get the ball there for whatever reason,” Robinson said. THE PEDIGREE RULE: Defensive end Chris Long had seven solid seasons with St. Louis as the second overall pick in 2008. But injuries kept him from being the star his dad, Hall of Famer Howie Long, was while winning a Super Bowl at the same position with Oakland. Long has his ring now as a steady influence with the New England defense on a $2.4 million, one-year contract. Located in downtown Fagatogo, this newly renovated building “Any player that’s been through ups and downs, and everybody provides the perfect space for interested business owners. in this league has — injuries, whatever,” said Long, who turns 32 later this month. “Things can change quickly, and luckily I never C M Location Highlights: gave up on it.” Y K • Private Property ANOTHER HOUSTON FIND: Lamar Miller landed with the • 24hr Security Texans after the Miami Dolphins decided to make Jay Ajayi their • Free Parking for business owners (also tow away zone for unauthorized lead running back. Dear Abby by Abigail Van Buren JILTED HUSBAND ALSO FEELS ABANDONED BY TWO DAUGHTERS DEAR ABBY: I am a father of two girls. Both of them no longer see, talk to or contact me. I’m divorced from their mother. She cheated on me after she went back to work and met a man she decided was her soul mate. That was 17 years ago. I haven’t talked to or seen my ex in all those years, and slowly both daughters distanced themselves from me until there was no relationship at all. On Father’s Day, my birthday or Christmas I never hear a word from either one. I tried numerous times to be a father to them. My youngest was recently married and didn’t invite me to her big wedding. I had been saving money over the years in case one of them needed help with a home or wedding. I have to say I am hurt. What could I have done to be a father when they didn’t want me in their lives? I talk to people and they keep telling me stories similar to mine. Is this common? -- REJECTED DAD OUT WEST DEAR DAD: Let me put it this way: It’s not unheard of. Something called “parental alienation” some- times happens in bitter divorces, when one parent poisons the children’s minds against the other. If I had to guess the reason for it in your case, it would be that your ex didn’t want the girls to know the reason for the divorce was her infidelity. There is nothing you can do about it now, because a mindset and a pattern have been set. Had you insisted on counseling for you and the girls when you realized the distancing was happening, you might have kept the lines of communication open. Things may improve one day when your daughters have children who are curious about meeting you, but in the meantime, for your own sake, please go on with your life and don’t dwell on your disappointment. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• DEAR ABBY: I’m a 13-year-old girl who is blessed to have both sets of grandparents alive and healthy. Recently, my dad’s mother has become very quiet and reserved at social events. She was never the “I need to talk to everyone” type, but at the last few family gatherings she wouldn’t involve herself in a long conversation with anyone. When my other grandparents tried to talk to her, her answers were curt and it was obvious she would rather not talk. At first we thought it was because of my baby cousin, who cried nearly every time my grandmother held her. Thankfully, that has stopped. Other family members have noticed her behavior, and we are unsure of what may be causing it. -- SILENT TREATMENT IN NEW YORK DEAR SILENT TREATMENT: Your grandmother may be upset about something, and her refusal to talk could be her way of expressing her displeasure, or she may be having a personal problem she’s not ready to discuss. Because other family members have noticed and are commenting about it, your par- ents should tell your grandfather that the family is concerned and ask him for an explanation, because he may be in a position to shed some light on it. samoa news, Thursday, March 09, 2017 Page B15 Page B16 samoa news, Thursday, March 09, 2017
