The infamous larger- than-life lit trees, the tun- nel that splits Hightower Park, wrapped trees, trails and the gazebo where San- ta Claus will make an ap- pearance each Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays during the season are lit. While the lights will be upgraded, safety concerns and lack of staffing have caused the Altus Parks and Recreation Department to stop running the Christ- mas train that circled the park last year and it will not be running this year either. Perez said for added safety and to prevent van- dalism, there will be city employees out every night watching for any mischief. Many of the wooden, hand-painted displays are still going up to include a photo op display of snow- men and a gingerbread house with a sleigh, two Christmas bulldogs rep- resenting the Altus High School’s mascot, a nativi- ty scene and Santa Claus along with his counterpart, the Grinch. Christmas in the Park will run through Christ- mas Day, Dec. 25, each eve- ning from dusk to 10 p.m.
