Manager’s Report 2021 Semi Annual Report to Unitholders (31st December 2020 to 30th June 2021)

Fund Review

The Allianz Global High Payout Fund (the “Fund”) investment objective to provide for a total return from dividend income and capital appreciation that should lead to sustainable distributions to investors. The fund has the opportunity to create additional income from selling call option on its holdings to generate option premium income. Call options could be sold on a total return consideration taking into account opportunity and risks.

The Fund outperformed its official benchmark1 as well as global equity markets as measured by MSCI World Index.

Total stock selection effects were positive in 2021. Regional allocation effects were slightly negative mainly due to the overweight of Emerging Markets in Asia, and a structural underweight of North America. Underweighting Japan could only slightly add to performance. Sector allocation effects were positive over the period mainly due to overweighting Energy. Defensive Value rebounded in 2021 and positively contributed to the equity underlying.

Market Review

Global equities surged over the first half of 2021 as the roll-out of COVID-19 vaccines boosted the outlook for a global economic recovery from the pandemic. US president’s Joe Biden’s plans for massive fiscal stimulus further bolstered sentiment although concerns grew about rising inflationary pressures. European equities were among the strongest performers as the reflation trade led to a rotation into cyclical companies out of technology stocks. In addition, energy companies soared, as oil prices rallied on expectations of strong demand. Banks also rebounded as higher long-term bond yields lifted the outlook for their profit margins.

US equities delivered robust gains, with both the broad S&P 500 Index and technology-focused Nasdaq Index hitting a series of fresh highs. The rally was underpinned by a swift recovery in corporate earnings, with the start of 2021 proving to be one of the best quarters for earnings growth in a decade as restrictions were eased given the US’s accelerating inoculation campaign. President Joe Biden’s plans for massive fiscal stimulus were also supportive, although the size of the measures sparked inflation concerns, causing investors to rotate out of richly valued growth stocks into out-of-favour value shares.

European equities surged the first half of 2021 (in EUR terms) and were among the best performers on a global basis as investors rotated into out-of-favour value stocks. The EuroStoxx 600 Index hit a series of fresh highs, with sentiment buoyed by hopes of a swift economic recovery as an accelerating vaccine roll-out and falling COVID-19 infection levels allowed restrictions to be eased. Corporate earnings growth was also supportive, with earnings almost doubling on a year-on-year basis in the first quarter as company profits rebounded after the sharp shock of the pandemic. At a sector level, almost all sectors advanced, led by banks, consumer discretionary and technology stocks. Utilities was the only sector to lose ground over the period.

Market outlook & Fund‘s strategy

The environment for equity investments remains favourable overall. While US growth momentum seems to be approaching its peak, the euro area is probably still some months away from this turning point. Data from Asia are mixed, as many countries are making slower progress with vaccinations than the western developed economies. The Chinese services sector is catching up, but domestic consumption remains subdued. Against this background, most companies are likely to continue to register strong earnings growth. Nevertheless, a slowdown in US growth and increasing concerns among market participants about the future path of monetary policy could raise the probability of an equity market correction. This applies even more as valuations in some regions and segments of the equity market appear quite ambitious.

For our strategy, we expect the solid performance backdrop for our investment styles as seen in H1 2021 to continue. Historically, mid-cycle markets have been the strongest environment for our strategy where all investment styles have been contributing.

2 Allianz Global Investors Premier Funds – Allianz Global High Payout Fund

We remain particularly positive for the investment style Value, our most important investment style. The investment style Value remains exceptionally cheap, and exceptionally cheap valuation of Value stocks is coupled with exceptionally strong earnings upgrades for Value stocks, typically a powerful combination to predict future outperformance for Value stocks. Also, higher interest rates speak for the investment style value.

However, so far, Value stocks have only rather reluctantly reacted to the sharp improvement in earnings revisions. Hence, there is more to expect from the performance of Value stocks, which is adding to our conviction for Value stocks, and to the conviction for our strategy.

1 The Benchmark for the Fund is a customized benchmark – 60% MSCI World + 40% Dividend Yield.

Note 3 The expense ratio has been computed based on the guidelines laid down by the Association of Singapore (“IMAS”). The calculation of the expense ratio at 30 June 2021 was based on total operating expenses of US$923,728 (2020: US$910,915) divided by the average net asset value of US$55,146,133 (2020: US$54,860,375) for the year. Note 4 On 28 December 2006, the Central Provident Fund Board (CPF Board) announced changes to the CPF Investment Scheme. One of these changes is that from 1 January 2008, the expense ratio for funds included under the CPF Investment Scheme has to be within the median expense ratio in their respective risk classes, in order to continue accepting CPF monies. The CPF Board has set a revised CPF expense ratio cap of 1.75% in 2016. The compliance with the expense ratio cap for each fund will be based on the audited report for the last financial year of the fund.

Note 5 The portfolio turnover ratio is calculated in accordance with the formula stated in the Code on Collective Investment Schemes. The calculation of the portfolio turnover ratio was based on the lower of the total value of purchases or sales of the underlying investments, being sales of US$24,969,555 (2020 purchases US$16,911,178) divided by the weighted average daily net asset value of US$58,988,261 (2020: US$50,633,180).

8 Allianz Global Investors Premier Funds – Allianz SGD Income Plus

Manager’s Report 2021 Semi-Annual Report to Unitholders (1st January 2021 to 30th June 2021)

Fund Review Allianz SGD Income Plus returned 0.93%2 (AM, SGD net) from the period 1 February 20212 to 30 June 2021. Over the period, the Fund’s allocation to fixed income and Asian REITs have both contributed positively to overall performance.

While the rise in government bond yields have weighed on the fixed income segment of the portfolio, the Fund’s flexible approach to duration management has helped to mitigate some of the duration impacts. SGD credits have also remained relatively more resilient amidst the rising rate environment and the heightened volatility in the broader Asian USD bond market.

Within the REITs portfolio, our selected Australian REITs outperformed Singapore REITs, spurred by the better economic and earnings backdrop. The Fund’s positions in Singapore REITs on the other hand, posted only modest positive returns after the sector was weighed down by the slowdown in economic activity after tighter COVID- related measures were imposed.

Market Review Globally, economic news supported growing optimism over the global economic outlook, with several countries returning to pre-pandemic growth levels in the first half of 2021. The US economy was particularly strong, helped by massive fiscal support. The stronger growth was however accompanied by a rise in inflationary pressures, sparking speculation that central banks would start to scale back the extraordinary support measures implemented in 2020. In Asian, the economic picture was mixed, with several countries having once again to impose pandemic lockdowns during the second quarter.

With the rise in inflation expectations US Treasury yields rose sharply, with the 10-year yield rising to almost 1.8% in March, before closing June just below 1.5%. Singapore government bonds (SGS) also rose in tandem with Treasury yields, with the 10-year SGS bond yields rising to 1.56% at end June.

Asian USD bond market saw a similar performance reversal from last year, posting negative returns for the 6 months ending June 2021. Aside from the rise in Treasury yields, investors were rattled by the various idiosyncratic headlines in China USD bond segment of the market. In contrast, SGD-denominated credits held up well, delivering +1.5%1 in total return terms over the first half of this year, as credit spreads remained supported.

Asia Pacific REIT markets have also delivered strong performance, despite bouts of volatility driven by higher Treasury yields and renewed lockdown measures in various countries. Australia REITs were amongst the better performers, delivering close to 10% in total returns since the start of the year, brought about by strong earnings results and revaluation gains as economic activity continued to recover. The Singapore REIT market on the other hand, was hurt by the resurgence in COVID cases which led to the government re-imposing tightening measures.

Market Outlook In view of lower 10 to 30Y US Treasury yields, we have been extending spread duration with the purchase of longer dated bonds. Relatively speaking, credit spreads have turned more attractive for longer dated bonds. They also provide some spread buffer amid the volatility in Treasury yields. All in all, we are turning more bullish on our duration positioning. Given the relative underperformance of SGS as compared to US Treasury, it also implies that our SGD corporate bond exposure could possibly benefit from a price catch up to USD assets.

REIT sentiment will continue to be governed by re-opening dynamics, which in turn are dependent on the pace of vaccine rollouts and the pervasiveness of new Covid variants. Whilst short-term volatility is expected arising from intermittent lockdowns and restrictions, the outlook is positive as value opportunities emerge. Inflationary concerns, which impact long-term government bond yields have somewhat abated.
