Th e Concordia University, Nebraska football team enters the 2008 season with optimism despite a 4-6 record in 2007. Th e team theme is “Passion with a Purpose.” With the off ense needing to replace two of the top-skill backs in the Great Plains Athletic Con- ference (GPAC) and depth returning on the defensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs will look to contend for one of the top spots in the GPAC.

Head coach Courtney Meyer, who enters his 19th year, anchors a staff that returns Scott Hoff man as off ensive coordinator and Vance Winter as defensive coordinator. “We are excited to get the season started,” said Meyer. “We feel good about the depth of the guys returning, as well as the number of newcomers making their way to campus.” Th e Bulldogs return 15 starters off of last year’s squad, including 7 on the defensive side of the ball. “We have a solid core of de- fenders returning,” said Meyer. “I think our defensive line is improved with Matt Baller and Brock Simonsen anchoring the line.” On the defensive side of the ball Concordia will rely on the abilities of senior nose guard Matt Baller. He established himself as one of the top defensive lineman in the GPAC over the last two seasons.

Off ensively the Bulldogs must replace two All-GPAC selections, running backs JaMaine Lewis and Jeff Neujahr. Both 2008 gradu- ates, Lewis was the leading rusher in the GPAC as the only back to average over 100 yards per game while Neujahr was the top punt returner and the number two kick returner in the conference. Concordia opens the season at home, hosting GPAC opponent Midland Lutheran College on Sept. 6 for a 7 p.m. contest. Th e contest against Midland is the only game scheduled to take place under the lights in 2008. Off ense In 2007 the Bulldogs were defi nitely a rushing team, averaging 161.8 yards on the ground and only 114.8 yards through the air. Off ensive coordinator Scott Hoff man would like to see those numbers go up, as Concordia fi nished ninth in the GPAC in total off ense. Th e Bulldogs will continue to utilize multiple sets on off ense including spread, I-formation and one back looks. Quarterback Junior Kyle Schmidt saw time under center last year and took the majority of the reps during spring ball. Also fi guring into the mix is senior Christian Spaulding. “It will be wide open heading into camp,” said Hoff man. “We are looking for the guy that can manage our off ense and give us the best opportunity to win.” Running Back Th e Bulldogs will look to the incoming crop of freshman and transfers to fi ll the void left by Lewis and Neujahr at running back.

When the Bulldogs utilize the fullback it will likely be either Chad Harmon or Austin Th ies. “Chad and Austin will battle at fullback,” said Meyer. “I think we can use them both. Th ey each have diff erent skills and are tough kids, and between the two of them, we will be fi ne.” Wide Receiver/Tight End At the wide receiver spot Dayton Daberkow, a 6-5 senior, showed signs of being a big play receiver and could be a favorite target for Bulldog QBs. Derrick Woods is making the switch to wide out to add a deep threat for the Bulldogs. At tight end Barry Eitzmann looks to have the inside track, and James Refenes is also going to fi gure into the mix. Refenes is also on the Bulldog track team and missed out on spring ball but has potential to be a solid contributor with good size at 6-7 and 250 lbs.

Concordia will also utilize a “fl ex” tight end, where junior Bryant Schweers, who is not a prototypical tight end, will step in. Schweers was one of the top threats in 2007, scoring two of the Bulldogs nine touchdowns through the air. 1111 22008008 OOUTLOOKUTLOOK

“Bryant has a lot of ability and size,” Meyer said. “We like to spread him out in order to utilize him.” Off ensive Line Concordia has the luxury of returning four of fi ve players on the off ensive front – all of whom started at one time last season. Th ree of the projected starters for the Bulldogs are seniors. “I think the off ensive line will be strength for us” said Meyer. “We really have some solid guys returning and they work together well.” In recent years the Bulldogs have been shuffl ing off ensive line players during the season but in 2008 the Bulldogs have the luxury of having solid starters returning at 4 of the 5 line positions.

Junior Dustin Ehlers will anchor the line from the center position for the second straight year with seniors Jordan Hinrichs and Jon McDaniel as the guards with returning All-GPAC selection Andrew Sunderman at one of the tackle positions with sophomore Marc McPhillips slated to start at the opposing tackle position. Defense Vance Winter, in his second year as defensive coordinator, is faced with the task of slowing down the Bulldogs opponents. In 2007 Concordia had a middle of the road defense allowing 21.4 points per game and will look to be one of the top defenses in the GPAC. Fortunately the Bulldogs return a strong nucleus of players up front that have experience and have put a lot of time in the weight room. Th e Bulldogs will continue to run a three-man front, with variations in the secondary. “Our strength is going to lie in the line,” said Meyer. “We don’t have a lot of depth up front but carry a lot of depth at the Linebacker and Secondary positions.”

Returners are: Jim Landers, Jeremy Walrath, Preston Harris, Luke Staab, Daniel Crowe and Casey Makey, all who saw action last season. Walrath showed signs of being a force, with 4.5 sacks. Defensive Line Th e line will be led by seniors Matt Baller and Brock Simonsen. Baller notched 11.5 tackles for a loss last year and led the GPAC with 8.5 sacks. Linebackers Th e Bulldogs are faced with the task of replacing All-GPAC linebacker Trent Laune who had 51 tackles as the number two tackler for Concordia. Th e Bulldogs will also have to replace Nate Hannemann who saw signifi cant action in 2007. “At linebacker we have guys we can count on – Walrath, Crowe, and Staab” added Winter. “We also have some freshmen who can come in and make an impact.” At times the Bulldogs defensive scheme blurs the line between linebackers and safety/cover players. Secondary Senior Jim Landers will handle one of the corner positions and should do a good job of it. Last season he was third on the team in tackles and broke up six passes and picked off another three. Th e Concordia secondary is also bolstered by the return of Preston Harris and Casey Makey each of which was slowed in 2007 by injury.
