This electronic edition has been amended for the errata noted by Dr. MacPhee. - i - THE LIVES OF OUR FATHERS PREFACE TO VOLUME II In Volume I the author has established the surnames of most of our Clan and has proposed the sources of the peculiar name by which our Gaelic compatriots defined us. In this examination we have examined alternate progenitors of the family. Any reader of Scottish history realizes that Highlanders like to move and like to set up small groups of people in which they can become heads of families or chieftains. This was true in Colonsay and there were almost a dozen areas in Scotland where the clansman and his children regard one of these as 'home'. The writer has tried to define the nature of these homes, and to study their growth. It will take some years to organize comparative material and we have indicated in Chapter III the areas which should require research. In Chapter IV the writer has prepared a list of possible chiefs of the clan over a thousand years. The books on our Clan give very little information on these chiefs but the writer has recorded some probable comments on his chiefship. -

Clan Donald Lands Trust: The First Steps A recollection from the Right Honourable Godfrey James Macdonald of Macdonald, 8th Lord Macdonald and 34th High Chief of Clan Donald, March 2019 Introduction It is now nearly fifty years since our Clan embarked on the latest chapter of our great history, namely the establishment of the Clan Donald Lands Trust. What we created then was without precedent - a Clan owning its own lands, administered by a board of Trustees from all parts of the English speaking world, for the benefit of all clansmen worldwide. This was a truly gargantuan undertaking, and as there are now only two of the original Trustees still alive, Clanranald and myself, I think that it is important to place on record those exciting, nail-biting, terrifying and sometimes desperate early days that have enabled the Clan Donald Lands Trust to become a reality. Background Following the death of my father in November 1970 and the inevitable sale of the Macdonald Estates to cover two lots of Death Duties and other inherited honourable debts some dating back to 1812, I was approached by Donald J Macdonald of Castleton, then President of the Clan Donald Society of Edinburgh. It had always been his dream that the Clan should acquire a small piece of the original Kingdom of the Isles, and that it should be held in perpetuity for all clansmen, while also concentrating on the historical and educational aspects associated with the Lordship of the Isles. The family were under enormous pressure to conclude a sale of the estate by the end of July 1971, so the Clan had less than six months to raise sufficient funds to enable it to make a meaningful offer for the estate. -

The following chapters appeared in the pages of " The Scottish Chronicle " in 1915 and 1916, and it is owing to the courtesy of the Proprietor and Editor that they are now republished in book form. Their original publication in the pages of a Church newspaper will explain something of the lines on which the book is fashioned. The articles were written to explain and to describe the origin and de\elopment of the Armorial Bearings of the ancient Dioceses of Scotland. These Coats of arms are, and have been more or less con- tinuously, used by the Scottish Episcopal Church since they came into use in the middle of the 17th century, though whether the disestablished Church has a right to their use or not is a vexed question. Fox-Davies holds that the Church of Ireland and the Episcopal Chuich in Scotland lost their diocesan Coats of Arms on disestablishment, and that the Welsh Church will suffer the same loss when the Disestablishment Act comes into operation ( Public Arms). -

With maturity came the desire for dependable records of its history, and I was disappointed at finding only incomplete accounts, here and there in published works, which were at the same time often contradictory. My succession to the Chiefship, besides bringing greetings from clansmen in many lands, also brought forth their expressions of the opinion that a complete history would be most desirable, coupled with the sug gestion that, as I had considerable data on hand, I com pile it. I felt some diffidence in undertaking to write about my own family, but, believing that under these conditions it would serve a worthy purpose, I commenced this work which was interrupted by the chaos of the Great War and by my own military service. In all cases where the original sources of information exist I have consulted them, so that I believe the book is quite accurate. -

March 2013 ANZAC CONFERENCE OF CLAN DONALD 2013 The first ANZAC Conference of Clan Donald was held on the fourth member High Commissioner Emeritus Donald the 7th to the 10th of February 2013 at the Spencer on Webster are unfortunately both deceased. They would have Byron Hotel in Takapuna, Auckland, New Zealand. had great satisfaction that Clan Donald has progressed to the stage that there is now the first ANZAC Conference. Around 50 members of Clan Donald from Australia and New Zealand, gathered at 5.30pm, on Thursday evening the 7th of February, at the Spencer on Byron Hotel for Harold McIsaac the pre-conference Cocktail Party. This gave the New High Commissioner Zealanders the opportunity to meet and chat with the Australian members from Queensland, New South Wales, Our first ANZAC Conference Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria. There was has come and gone and from all also a visitor from Scotland. reports and comments was a great success. Three excellent papers were presented:- Neil MacDonald, President of Clan Donald (1) Allan of Vallay address on:- Queensland and his brother Jim. “Clan Donald Worldwide” and “The Clan Donald Lands Trust” (2) Ian MacDonnell address on:- “The Lords of the Isles and Iona” accompanied by visual presentation and question time. (3) Clan Donald Historian Carl Alison Williams, Treasurer of Clan Donald Auckland, Andrew Bradley address on:- Wilkie, President of Clan Donald Auckland and Harold McIsaac, High Commissioner for Clan Donald New Zealand. “Scotland after the 45” Malcolm Nicolson from Clan Donald New South Wales, I have been requested to publish Pam McDonald, Commissioner for Western Australia and distribute them in a conference and Lachlan MacDonald, Commissioner for NSW. -

Shortly before the War broke out a Dr von Guthry. of Posen, came to see me on his way to Edin- burgh, where he wished to make some in- vestigations into the family history. He was able to give certain assistance to Mr A. Francis Steuart in editing the "Scots in Poland" for the Scottish History Society. By cutting off their tails, as it were, a number of Jews have passed into something Scots, thus Rosenberg, Rosenbloom, Rosen- thal, and so on, have become simple "Rose." though not of the Kilravock type. No doubt it is true as ever that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, except when its stalk is: -berg, -bloom, or -baum. From time to time during the War pro- posals have been made to deal more dras- tically with changes of name than we have hitherto done, but it may be questioned whether anything will be done to stop the practice altogether. As it is, the custom must lead to a great deal of confusion for genealo- gists, and the writing of family history will become more difficult than ever. BATTLE OF GLENLIVET. A paper on the Battle of Glenlivet was contributed by Rev. R. H. Calder— The Name. Altahoolachan is the big name of a small stream between three and four miles in length near the eastern boundary of Glen- livet parish. -

The woman, traditionally known as Janet Horne, warmed herself, thinking the fire had been lit to take the chill from her bones and not, as was actually intended, to burn her to death. Or so the story goes. This case is well known as the last example of the barbarous practice of burning witches in Scotland. It is also infamous for some of its more unusual characteristics – such as the alleged witch ‘having ridden upon her own daughter’, whom she had ‘transformed into a pony’, and of course, the memorable image of the poor, deluded soul warming herself while the instruments of her death were being prepared. Impressive materials, though the most familiar parts of the story did not appear in print until at least 92 years after the event!1 Ironically, although Gaelic-speaking Scotland has been noted for the relative absence of formal witch persecutions, it has become memorable as the part of Scotland that punished witches later than anywhere else. -

ORTHOGRAPHIC PRACTICES AND CULTURAL IDENTITIES This article owes its origins less to the paper by Kathleen Hughes (1980) suggested by this title, than to the interpretation put forward by Professor Derick Thomson (1968: 68; 1994: 100) that the Scots- based orthography used by the scribe of the Book of the Dean of Lismore (c.1514–42) to write his Gaelic was anomalous or an aberration − a view challenged by Professor Donald Meek in his articles ‘Gàidhlig is Gaylick anns na Meadhon Aoisean’ and ‘The Scoto-Gaelic scribes of late medieval Perth-shire’ (Meek 1989a; 1989b). The orthography and script used in the Book of the Dean has been described as ‘Middle Scots’ and ‘secretary’ hand, in sharp contrast to traditional Classical Gaelic spelling and corra-litir (Meek 1989b: 390). Scholarly debate surrounding the nature and extent of traditional Gaelic scribal activity and literacy in Scotland in the late medieval and early modern period (roughly 1400–1700) has flourished in the interim. It is hoped that this article will provide further impetus to the discussion of the nature of the literacy and literary culture of Gaelic Scots by drawing on the work of these scholars, adding to the debate concerning the nature, extent and status of the literacy and literary activity of Gaelic Scots in Scotland during the period c.1400–1700, by considering the patterns of where people were writing Gaelic in Scotland, with an eye to the usage of Scots orthography to write such Gaelic. -

Troubled Times John MaIden The period between 1520 and 1620 was one of radical change on the religious front when not only did the method of worship alter, but also the administration of the local economy moved into secular control. By 1520 the Monastery and Abbey of Paisley were under the control of Abbot Robert Shaw who was elected Bishop of Moray in 1525. Shaw was the nephew of the previous Abbot, the builder George Shaw, and saw the position of Abbot and the worship in the Church at its height of power, ceremony and colour. It is often forgotten that the churches were full of colour, as today we are used to the austere plain stonework and lack of ornament. An example of the richness of the fittings in the Abbey at this period is given by the printed, and coloured, Missal presented by one of the Monks, Robert Kerr, to the altar of the Virgin in the early 1550's. The high quality of the text, printed in Paris, and the jewel-like appearance of the illustrations gives a hint of the grandeur on public view. Now in the care of the National Library of Scotland, this Missal is the only known service book to survive from the Monastery. Shaw was succeeded, as the last religious Abbot, by John Hamilton, a young monk from Kilwinning, who was the illegitimate son of the Earl of Arran. Hamilton became one of the outstanding figures during the time of crisis which led to the dissolution of monasteries in Scotland. -

By three centuries he anticipated that parochial system of education which has lately become the law of England; by nearly half that period he set forth those principles of civil and religious liberty which culminated in a system of constitutional government. To him Englishmen are indebted for the Protestant character of their "Book of Common Prayer;" Scotsmen for a Reforma tion so thorough as permanently to resist the encroachments of an ever aggressive sacerdotalism. Knox belonged to a House ancient and respectable; but those bearing his name derive their chiefest lustre from 1eing connected with a race of which he was a member. The family annals presented in these pages reveal not a few of the members exhibiting vast intellectual capacity and moral worth. \Vhat follows is the result of wide research and a very extensive correspondence. So many have helped that a catalogue of them ,...-ould be cumbrous.
