Adventurous Reading

We all get into reading ruts. This summer, why not venture into the new world of literary otherness? How many different genres have you tried? The collections of the Goffstown Public Library have a little something for everyone, as reflected in the lists below. Overly fond of fiction? Try a biography (even though you probably already know how it ends). Never read a graphic novel? Give one a gander. Aren't westerns just a different kind of historical fiction? Don't have much time for reading? Give poetry or short stories a try. Throw away whatever prejudices or preconceived notions you may have about genres you haven't picked up lately -- you might be pleasantly surprised! For recommendations, contact our librarians. Complete 3 out of 16 activities to earn 50 points.

In an interview describing her memoir, author Jacqueline Winspear wrote the following: "The elements of endurance and resilience are woven into the fabric of my memoir... So many of us grew up with those traits drummed into us, and we're learning them anew this year [2020], drawing upon the strengths passed down to us. I think that's something for us to remember—the very fact that we are on this earth is a result of our ancestors enduring the worst of times. Plagues have come and gone before—and our ancestors made it through. They persevered through wars, social unrest, prejudice and sickness; they drew upon powers of survival to pull through all those yesterdays, and they took the bad with the good. Our existence is testament to their fortitude—now we have to draw upon that hardiness woven into our DNA as we throw out our line into the future and play a part in the crafting of a better tomorrow for everyone.” Over the last year, we have often heard the term 'unprecedented' in relation to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic; how do the challenges we continue to face compare with those endured by our forebears? What's up with the night sky? Summer's warmer, longer days invite us to linger a little longer outside; the heat indoors, so marvelous in winter, is far less alluring come July. This mission provides you with the perfect mind-expanding excuse to loiter out-of-doors: take the time to breathe deep, look up, and learn all you can about the stars. Complete 3 out of 5 activities to earn 50 points.

The night sky has been a source of fascination since the dawn of humankind; like bird-watching, it is unpredictable, rewarding, and costs you nothing. All you need for successful stargazing is a little knowledge. Learn more about the cosmos and what it is you're actually looking at when you tilt your head to take in the skyscape above you! To complete this activity:

1. Learn about the 88 recognized constellations26, or the most famous star patterns among them27. For more information, search for books in the library catalog28 or contact our librarians. 2.
