This year marks the silver jubilee of the Graduate School of International Development (GSID) at Nagoya University. GSID set off twenty‐five years ago to pioneer development research and teaching in Japan. The country’s own rapid economic development had swiftly turned it into one of the largest foreign aid donors in the world and it needed to find and train the expertise required to fulfil this leading role.

In the twenty‐five years that have passed since then, the world of international development has undergone a significant transformation. Most recently, the adoption by the United Nations of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in New York in September 2015 has radically changed our understanding of what ‘development’ means. With this set of 17 new global goals, the old agenda of rich countries helping poor ones address development problems is giving way to a new vision. Thus, ‘development’ has become a global agenda for both rich and poor countries designed to balance a sustainable planet with economic prosperity and social justice.

As a pioneer development research institution in Asia, GSID would like to seize the opportunity of its silver jubilee to think more deeply about how we should re‐orient ourselves to a new era of development research and teaching. We have invited a key‐note speaker from the Global Development Institute (GDI) at the University of Manchester (UK), who is also the president of the Development Studies Association, to share his Institute’s experience with us. We are also organizing round‐table discussions to examine what specific roles development research institutions in Asia should play in addressing the new global development agenda, and what research priorities exist for promoting a sustainable world economy and a just society.
