K1 A, R, 102-1-15 ( C -1) "Activities t.Jhich are sponsored, accredited or con ducted by educational institutions, by professional associations, or by private institutions which are nationally or regionally accredited for training. "

Activities in this category are sponsored or accredited by such groups as the Kansas Psychological Association, the Midwest Psychological Association (any of the regional psychological associations or state psychological associations), the American Psychological Association or activities offered by other disciplines/associations wherein the content is specifically and directly related to psychology. Such organizations might include those for nurses, physicians, social workers, activity therapists, and the like. These activities include workshops, seminars, and other events that are advertised as continuing education offerings

by these organizations/associations. >

Documentation of participation in CATEGORY 1 activities will include or be in the form of a letter from the offering institution/agency/ association indicating the title of the activity, the presenter, the num ber of hours, and the type of association. CATEGORY 2 - MAXIMUM 50 HouRs (5 UNITs)

K1 A, R1 102-1-15 ( C-2) "Activities conducted by agencies and groups which do not meet the requirements of national or regional accreditation, if the content is clearly related to the enhancement of psychology skills and knowledge. " Activities in this category are identified as nonsponsored or nonaccredited activities. These activities are presented or conducted by agencies or groups which do not meet the CATEGORY 1 requirements. Basi cally, these activities are seminars, workshops, and inservice training sessions held in various agencies or offices where the content and the structure is clearly related to psychology, but the provider has not sought external accreditation for the activity: typically an internally provided event including book and journal clubs, and staff enrichment activities.

The distinction between CATEGORY 1 and CATEGORY 2 is that CATEGORY 1 activities carry formal accreditation and CATEGORY 2 tends to be in-house activities provided by groups that have not sought accreditation.

Written documentation from the sponsoring institution or agency should include details regarding dates, agency providing the activity, hours, and nature of activity. -45- There may be instances where an agency will be providing continuing education credit in both categories. For example: a private psychiatric hospital could be providing a four-day workshop that is approved for social work, the American Psychological Association, the American Medical Association, etc., and be CATEGORY l credit. Within that same agency, a staff psychologist could be requesting CATEGORY 2 credit for attending an on-going case conference about a psychological topic for which the agency did not seek external credit, but that is clearly continuing education activity.

CATEGORY 3 - MAXIMUM 50 HouRs (5 UNITs)

K.A.R, 102-l-15(c-3) 11PY.esentation of courses, workshops, or other formal training activi.ties, when the content is clearly related to the enhance ment of psychology skills and knowledge. Continuing education credit shall be allowed only for the initial presentation. A maximum of two continuing education units (20 hours) shall be allowed for providing super vision. A maximum of two units (20 hours) shall be allowed for receiving supervision. 11

Activities in this category are teaching, supervising, and pro viding other training activities. This activity is presentation of courses, workshops, and other types of training activities with the content being clearly related to psychology. Included herein is college course prepara tion and teaching. It should be noted that in all cases of presentation, credit can be claimed only for the first presentation of a course, work shop, etc.

Credit for the presentation of the workshops, etc., will be allowed for the actual contact time of the presentation; i.e. , if a psychologist is teaching an 8-hour workshop that provides 3 hours in the morning, 3 hours in the afternoon, and 2 hours in the evening, the psycho logist should receive credit for the full 8 hours of presentation. The psychologist may not c1 aim credit for preparatory time. l'lhen the content is clearly related to psychological knowledge and skills, it does not matter for what group the workshop or the course is offered, only the content is relevant.

Documentation includes, in the case of a course, a course outline or a course description. If the activity was a college course, the descrip tion of that course from the college catalog should be provided. The focus is, again, on the content, which shall be relevant to psychological know ledge and/or skills. The emphasis is on the first-time presentation of such activities so that someone who has developed and presented a course in 1984 at the university and then again teaches the course in 1985 will not be allowed continuing education credit for both presentations.

Supervision of students or uncertified assistants--maximum of 20 hours (2 units). Supervision under these circumstances would constitute the provision of continuing education to the student, intern, post-doctoral resident, etc. Documentation surrounding the provision of supervision would be in the form of identifying the individual being supervised and the dates on which supervision is provided. Supervision need not be restricted to psychologists or psychology students but may include representatives of other disciplines being supervised in an activity which is clearly psycho logical in nature, for example; supervision of a psychiatric resident or a social work student in psychotherapy would constitute appropriate claim

-46- of credit under this category. Credit given is for direct hours of con tact that are counted so that if 10 hours of superv1s1on over a 2-year period are claimed, there should be 10 one-hour episodes of supervision documented by providing dates of supervisory contacts.

CATEGORY 4 - MAXIMUM oF 50 HouRs (5 UNITs) K,A,R. J.Q2-.l-15(c-4) "Publications and professional presentations. One and one-half units (15 hours) may be claimed for each publication or book chapter authored by the applicant and one unit (10 hours) may be claimed for each scientific or professional paper presented."

The documentation within this category may be: a full copy of the article as published, a letter from the publisher indicating acceptance of the article, or a copy of the article with an accompanying letter (a photocopy of the letter sent to the publisher). It should be noted that in this category, one may not claim double c~edit for presentation of a publication.

Appearances on talk shows, question and answer sessions on public television or radio, etc., will not be given credit. Nor should a psychologist be given credit for listening to them. Writing newspaper columns, appearing on talk shows, making television appearances, etc., constitute a display of professional competence, not an acti~ity designed to further the psychologist's continuing education.

CATEGORY 5 - MAXIMUM OF 50 HOURS (5 UNITS) K• A • R • 102-1-15 (c-5) "Non-supervised, self-programmed activities. Such activities include, but are not limited to, the follmdng:"

CATEGORY B - Preparation for Specialty Board Exams: K.A.R. l02-1-15(c-5B) "Pr>epai'ation by the applicant for a specialty board examination. The maximum number of units allowed shall be two units (20 hours) and shall be allowed only for the applicant's initial preparation for such an examination."

This activity includes preparation for a specialty board examina tion. Exams of this nature would include those which are provided by the American Board of Professional Psychology, the Academy of Child and Family Therapists, etc.

Documentation includes the name of the examination for which the psychologist is preparing and the intended time of the year in which the examination is intended to be taken. Passage of the examination is not necessary for the claiming of credit. However, it is to be noted only the initial period of preparation can be claimed for credit. -47- CATEGORY C

Activities of this nature require the review of peers, of activities, or of agencies that are related to diagnosis treatment typically of patients/clients. Do~umentation shall include dates on which these meetings occurred. Documentation of case consultation with another psychologist shall include the name of the other psychologist and the dates on which the consultations took place.

CATEGORY D - Participation in Professional Organizations

K.A.R. 102-1-15(c-5D) "Participation in pr>ofessional organizations, if the organization's goals are clearly related to the enhancement of psycho logy values, skills, and_knowledge. Such participation may include, but is not limited to, holding office or ser>ving on committees of the or>ganiza tion. The maximum continuing education credit allowed shall be one unit (10 hours)."

Documentation shall include the photocopy of the letter of appointment to committees, a photocopy of the holding of the office of an organization, or a photocopy of that organization's or association's pub lication indicating the psychologist is an elected officer or official of that group.

Documentation shall include the name of the therapist and the schedule of appointments. Personal therapy shall include individual psycho therapy, group psychotherapy, and counseling. Personal psychotherapy as it is intended refers to individual and not family per se, although occasion may be made for any for psychotherapy in which the psychologist is engaged. Uses of this category may require an evaluation review.

K,A,R, 102-l-15(n) "If continuing education credits ar>e claimed within par>a graph (1) of this r>egulation, at least one-fifth shall have been earned in activities sponsor>ed by an agency or institution other> than where the psychologist is employed."
