“Tell us something interesting about your regional literary productions,” Barrett Wedall asked his 1906 American Literature class. Enrolling as a Master’s student in an effort to right his listing career with the University of Texas and then Texas A&M, the question stirred John A. Lomax, Sr.’s, long-standing interest in the vernacular music of his childhood Texas. With further validation from the Lyman Kittredge, heir to Francis J. Child, Lomax embarked on a course that would make field work a Lomax family vocation. His 1908-1910 wax cylinder recordings would form the basis for the landmark Cowboy Songs and other Frontier (1910).

For a time, however, Lomax’s ethnography was largely put on hold as his academic and then finance careers blossomed, and it wasn’t until 1932 that his interest in collecting was renewed. It came from a period of loss: Lomax’s wife passed in 1931 and his work selling bonds dried up. At sixty-four, a circuitous path led him to the office of Herbert Putnam, Librarian of Congress, the man who would authorize his new title, Honorary Curator of the Archive of American Folk-Song. Lomax’s late-blossoming would facilitate the firm establishment of what is now the .

The Lomax art of documenting culture may be divided into two categories. Best known are the months-long winding trips that surveyed regional singing traditions. In 1938 Alan drove 8400 miles for three months in Michigan. In 1952 he spent six months winding through Spain. ’s trips were typically long sloughs between Washington and Dallas. The ethonographers maintained no base camp, instead carrying their lives— recording machines and accoutrement, tape or disc stock, notes, research materials, clothes, bedding—in often unreliable automobiles. retained many of his repair bills from 1952 and his Peugot appears to have been entirely rebuilt by the time he emerged from the Pyranees headed north to his home in London. Other sessions were more controlled and succinct. These were made in the Library of Congress recording studio in the early days, and in later times at the performer’s home, usually just a few hours in duration. Both types posed particular challenges, but the Lomaxes possessed what we might call ambiguity tolerance and a joy for the open road.

This guide documents recording sessions and field trips made by members of the Lomax family, 1908–1991. Information sources include the original recordings and manuscripts in the Lomax collections, as well as secondary sources such as Nolan Porterfield’s Last Cavalier: The Life and Times of John A. Lomax, 1867–1948 (1996). More than 200 entries provide detailed information about each event providing a chronological look at the output of an exceptionally influential family for American 20th century ethnography. Anchored by the work of John, Sr., during the 1930s, and continuation of that work by Alan Lomax from the 1930s to the 1960s, it includes contributions by John’s second wife, Ruby Terrill Lomax, and his children, Bess and John, Jr.
