Reflection from Rev. Andrew Orr Hello everyone, Last week, I wrote how the people of Tromso, Norway, 250 km above the Arctic Circle adapted to the long winter of endless darkness, when the sun never rises above the horizon from mid November to mid January. One of the crucial ways they do this is to “change the mindset”, to reframe stressful events as “challenges” with opportunities to learn and adapt. So the winter can be a chance for quiet walks in the snow, to go ice fishing, or skiing, or simply curl up in front of a big fire.

Reframing the stresses in our life as challenges is not always easy, but we can do this. One study showed that simply saying to yourself “I am excited” before a stressful event such as public speaking or an exam can actually help to reduce anxiety. So if you are faced with a stressful situation ask yourself “what can I learn from this?”, “what can I find in this that is interesting?”, “what can I achieve if get through this?”

All this helps to build our resilience as we face the days to come.

God bless, Canon Andrew Orr

Midleton College: Music Tuition Scheme

The College offers all students the opportunity to avail of ‘one to one’ instrumental and / or singing tuition - Piano / Keyboard, Guitar, Singing, Music Theory, Ukulale, Clarinet,

Saxophone, Button Accordion, Violin, Viola, Recorder & Tin Whistle.

Lessons are delivered by a team of highly qualified professionals and can be given either

after school, or during class time on a rota system at different time each week. Lessons are suitable for beginners (and are given in a kind and patient way) as well as students of all levels. Students may work towards accredited RIAM exams and enter festivals and

tours if they so choose. Many thousands of young people have learnt instruments and singing at the College

through this scheme over the eighty years or so that the scheme has been running; some have even gone on to musical careers of high distinction. Click the link below for further details, or contact Ian Sexton by email:

ONE WAY TRAFFIC FLOW Please see below the one way traffic system we encourage parents to use in order to enter and exit the back gate of the school. The road on which the gate is situated is 2-way but narrow. To ease traffic congestion and in respect of local residents, entry to the car park should be made from the Dungourney end, and exit past the National School. Your co-operation in this matter is appreciate d.

PTA

In the coming weeks, the PTA will host Zoom coffee mornings/wine evenings, and other PTA events. We realise zooms are far from ideal, but in the current circumstances they are a reasonable alternative to our traditional coffee mornings / drinks evenings, and are one of the ways we can try to support social connection for parents. As most of you know these are typically an opportunity for an informal catch up, help new parents to connect, etc. We can also discuss on the call, if there are other ways in which parents/guardians may be able to connect, and share and learn from each other, during this unusual year. The Zoom links will be emailed to each year group accordingly.

The following Zoom meetings are scheduled for Form groups I, IV & V. Form VI - Wednesday 7th October at 7.30pm

Form V - Friday 9th October at 10.00am

Form I - Tuesday 13th October at 7:00pm Form IV - Friday 16th October at 10.00am

All welcome, and we look forward to speaking with you. If you have any questions in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to let us know. Kind regards, Sally Drennan, PTA Secretary. Midleton College Newsletter Monday 5th October 2020

Midleton College Junior Cycle Corner

Message to all Form 2 and Form 3 pupils and their parents/guardians Please find below timeline of the Classroom Based Assessments (CBAs) for both Form 2 and Form 3. In consultation with the subject teachers, we spread the CBAs as evenly as possible over the course of the school year, taking into account departmental deadlines, too. While – as of now - there are no changes to the Junior Cycle programme for Form 2 pupils, Form 3 pupils will have a reduced programme as was outlined in our newsletter from 31 August. Should circumstances change at school or departmental level due to Covid 19, we will keep you informed. Please check this newsletter for regular updates, deadlines and further developments. Likewise, if you have any concern or feedback in relation to the CBAs or Junior Cycle, please feel free to contact us. Best wishes,

Andrew Levis & Melanie Henry

Modern Foreign Languages News

Library Grant for Foreign Language Books:

For the second time in a row, Midleton College has been awarded a €500 grant from the Post Primary Language Initiative (PPLI) to purchase foreign language books and resources for the school library. This is part of Ireland’s Foreign Languages Strategy 2017-2027 to promote foreign languages and to encourage pupils whose home language is not Irish or English to maintain and cherish their heritage language. The College's MFL teachers have been very busy selecting and ordering suitable books and DVDs in German, French and Spanish over the last few weeks. However, now we need the help of our (international) pupils and their parents! If there are any books written in your home language or a foreign language you would like us to get for the school library, please inform Ms. Henry by email [email protected] or the office by Wednesday 13th October 2020.

Leaving Certificate Exams in Lithuanian, Mandarin Chinese, Polish and Portuguese:

As you might be aware, new language specifications for Lithuanian, Mandarin Chinese, Polish and Portuguese have been recently published by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA). They are currently being implemented on a nationwide level with Fifth Year students for examinations in 2022. While Midleton College does not offer timetabled classes to prepare students for these Leaving Cert exams, there is support available from the Post Primary Language Initiative. Please check their website www.ppli.ie for further information or contact Ms. Henry by email [email protected], should you require further assistance. Midleton College Sunflower Competition 2020

Congratulations to our winners of the inaugural Midleton College Sunflower Competition 2020 organised by

Midleton College Horticulture. Lauren Murphy (TY, 1st Prize), Harry Ellis (Form 1, 2nd Prize) and Ben Troy (Form 1, 3rd Prize) proved themselves to be the champions of all sunflower growers and received their prizes, a voucher for the local cafe Monty's, for all their efforts. The competition started during lockdown to raise awareness for biodiversity and environmental issues and for pupils to enjoy the outdoors. It was great seeing so many pupils getting involved. In particular the First Years pupils deserve special praise. The competition will run again in Spring 2020. Let's get Midleton College growing!

Green Schools News September 19th – 27th was National Bike Week and we at Green Schools had an eventful one. As well as our weekly meetings, we took a group photo to enter a competition to win a bike shelter. Despite the drizzle, the turnout was good and we captured a lovely picture including some of our newbies, as well as our seasoned

Green Schoolers. Post photo shoot, we emailed the picture to An Taisce to be in with a chance to win. Fingers crossed folks! Having observed growing numbers of students cycling to school, we also applied for a grant from Green Schools for the supply and installation of increased cycle parking in the school. We applied for funding for a 10 space rack and shelter, as well as a shelter for our existing bike rack to the rear of the school. Thursday, October 1st was Tetra Pack Tree Day and to mark the occasion, we at Green Schools renewed our pledge to always do our best to be lifelong friends of the environment. We are awaiting a Scots pine sapling kindly supplied by the Tree Council of Ireland and Tetra Pack, which we will plant on the school grounds. As we continue our two-year journey on the theme of Travel, we hope to offer cycle safety training and bike maintenance classes to students during the 20/21 school year. We will also be keeping up the good work on other initiatives with biodiversity, waste, energy, water and litter. Pictured are some of our enthusiastic Green School Committee members braving the elements for a noble cause. #bikeshedchallenge

UCAS “Virtual University Roadshow” - Thursday 22nd October, 9am - 5pm UCAS are running the event on a bespoke online platform in which the students will have to sign up and pre- register prior to the event. The event will run from 9am-5pm for students to log in on their own time or if you would prefer to book a slot you can avail of this option as well if you wish to assign a particular class in the school day for your students to log on and participate.
