2 Dear Friends,

“What” shouted a heckler to Lord Soper (the famous Methodist orator) at Speakers’ Corner in Hyde Park, “What has the Church ever done for the working class?” Quick as a flash Lord Soper shouted back “Given ‘em the weekend”.

Of course, he could have added “and holidays”, though the idea of holidays predates Christianity. The word, as you all no doubt know, is derived from “holy days”, and long before Christianity, there were great religious festivals which included having time off work to enjoy them. Many of these festivals were taken over by the Church and linked with Christian celebrations such as Christmas or saints’ days. In fact, in earlier times the only holidays that working people had were the Church’s holy days. My father’s father always dug his garden and sowed various seeds on Good Friday, because that was one of the few days off he had as a farm worker. He had to milk the cows, but apart from that the day was his own.

Perhaps it’s not a bad thing that holidays were associated with the Christian religion, because it did make clear that our faith wasn’t an austere religion which frowned upon the simple pleasures of life and that neither Christianity nor Christians were killjoys.

The word holy indicates something set apart or different. So in what ways are holidays different, or set apart?

The primary purpose of a holiday is to give us an opportunity for relaxation and renewal. The fourth Commandment tells us that the Sabbath day is a day of rest, and this informs us that rest is a duty and that God is concerned about our bodies as well as our souls. Many people are suffering from strain and stress caused by the absurd pace of life. I cannot understand why, when people go on holiday, they are constantly checking their mobile phones about work. A holiday is about being away from work. As a doctor said to me once “Well, Rector, you will know better than me, but your churchyard is full of people who thought themselves indispensable”.

The value of a holiday is a chance to slow down, to enjoy time with your family and friends away from the hectic pace and din of work. It is a chance to have more sleep and to enjoy meals without the telephone interrupting all the time (well, it is for me). A tired mind needs as much rest as a tired body. So we must also have opportunities for mental relaxation. Read that novel you’ve been promising yourself to read for the past year; listen to music; go out visiting the countryside; just sit on the beach and listen to the waves and let them carry all your cares and worries away.

One blessing of a holiday is that it often gives us time to think, to reflect about our faith, and sometimes a visit to another church gives us an opportunity to experience God in a new way. So let’s make the best use of our holidays so that we can return home strengthened in spirit as well as renewed in mind and body.

I do hope that you will be able to have an enjoyable and restful holiday.

May God bless you. Your Priest and Friend, Edward Ward 3

FROM THE EDITOR

Firstly, we send our very best wishes and many congratulations to our Rector Edward and his wife Jane on their Ruby Wedding Anniversary on 7th August. May they enjoy many more happy years ahead.

The lovely photos on the front cover illustrate Edgmond’s enthusiastic celebrations for the Queen’s 90th birthday. The Quiz Night party at the Village Hall (top left) was a great success, and below it are two pictures of the excellent Queen’s birthday lunch held at St Peter’s Church. On the right is Anne Green toasting the Queen at the Village Hall alongside the magnificent birthday cake made by Anne.

The next edition of the Parish Magazine and Village News will cover the month of October 2016 and the deadline for contributions is Sunday, 4th September. I would be very grateful if you can deliver your contributions in good time to me at the address on the inside front cover – or you can email them to me at [email protected]. And I’m always delighted to receive your photos (preferably by email) not just for the front cover, but also to illustrate your articles and contributions inside.

Don’t forget that you can also read this magazine online on both the village and church websites (addresses on the front cover).

COFFEE AND CHAT

The next Thursday Coffee Mornings at St Peter’s Church will be on August 18th and September 15th following the 9.30 am Holy Communion Service. You don’t have to attend the service to be able to have a cup of coffee. Just turn up at the church at about 10.00 am or thereabouts, and join us for coffee (or tea) and a chat. We shall look forward to seeing you.

HEALING SERVICES

Just to remind you all that the next monthly Healing Services at St Peter’s, Edgmond will be held on 14th August and 11th September, both at 6.30 pm.

RECTOR’S 25TH ANNIVERSARY

We’ve discovered, thanks to the Archdeacon, that this year will be the 25th anniversary of the Rector’s Induction as our Rector. It was on November 6th 1991 at St Peter’s that Edward was inducted as Rector of Edgmond, Kynnersley and Preston upon the Wealdmoors. It is rather rare these days to find a Parish Priest who has stayed so long in one parish or group of parishes, so let’s organise a celebration.

We’ve also discovered that the Rector and Jane celebrate their Ruby Wedding Anniversary on August 7th - another reason for a party!

CELEBRATING THE QUEEN’S 90TH BIRTHDAY

St Peter’s Church celebrated the Queen’s Birthday in grand style. The church was decked in bunting and Union flags as well as the flags of the other nations in the U.K. The church service contained suitable hymns, including the National Anthem, all of which were sung with great gusto. During the service the Church Choir sang an anthem. 10 After the service the congregation sat down to a Bring and Share lunch in the church, and during this lunch patriotic music was played, which added to the joyful atmosphere of the gathering. After the lunch the Bell Ringers rang a peal to mark the Queen’s birthday.

Grateful thanks must be given to all who provided such delicious refreshments; and the drinks; those who moved the pews on Saturday following the wedding; those who cleaned up afterwards and who moved the pews back, and special thanks to Jane who did most of the organisation.

It really was a very enjoyable, informal, and fun event.

BELLRINGING FOR THE QUEEN’S 90TH BIRTHDAY

On Sunday 12 June the local bellringers completed the task they set themselves early in the year, of ringing two full peals and a quarter peal to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. The idea was to give everyone in the band who wished to, and was capable enough, a chance to ring something special for the occasion. As described in the June edition, we rang a quarter peal on her actual birthday, 21 April, and a full peal on Saturday 23 April. The 12 June peal was rung on the weekend of the official celebrations of the Queen’s birthday. Rung in 2 hours 48 minutes, it consisted of 5120 changes of Bristol Surprise Major and was rung by the following: Biff Patterson, Edric Broom, Chloe Darby, Maurice Ingram, Gail Lawrence, Paul Lewis, Matthew Lawrence and Christopher Wulkau (conductor). It was the first peal of Bristol for Chloe.

In order to give the newest recruits to the band, Annette Bailey and Robert Herbert, plus Vernon, a chance to ring something special, on 11 June we also rang a touch of Devon style Call Changes, ’60 on thirds’. The band was Edric Broom (conductor), Annette Bailey, Barry Lewis, Robert Herbert, William Deason and Vernon Blakeman, and it took 18 minutes.

We are very fortunate to be able to call so many skilled and experienced ringers who are attached to the Edgmond band. Edric Broom Tower Captain.

THE CLYPPING

The annual Clypping service was held at St Peter’s Church on Sunday 26th June. The preacher was John Trudgill, who stepped in at very short notice to replace Fr Allen Roberts who was unable to come because of a family emergency. John preached a very interesting and humorous sermon, and made the point that clypping can be translated as meaning to throw your arms around someone. And he said that this was what God, through Jesus, has done to the whole world and all people.

In spite of the threat of rain the congregation processed out and, while a light drizzle fell, the circle around the church was formed. The clergy and choir processed around St Peter’s as everyone sang the traditional Clypping hymn (sung at all the 149

11 services) “We love thy place, O God”. After the service refreshments were served in the church. Very many thanks to those who made and served these.

So once more this ancient ceremony, unique to Edgmond, was held and completed. Next year will be the 150th celebration so let’s hope that there will be a large gathering to mark the occasion and that Edgmond will continue to be the only place in the world with such a long continuous tradition of clypping its church.

MOTHERS’ UNION

The next meeting will be on Thursday 15th September at 2.15 pm in St Peter’s Church, Edgmond, when we will celebrate 25 years of the Revd Prebendary Edward Ward’s service to Edgmond Mothers’ Union and his ministry at St Peter’s Church. This will take the form of a service when the address will be given by the Ven Paul Thomas, Archdeacon of Salop. This will be followed by refreshments. Everyone is welcome.

For further information and/or help with transport please contact Margaret Matthews on 825976.

THE FRIENDS OF ST PETER’S CHURCH EDGMOND

Friends of St Peter’s Church Annual General Meeting

The Friends of St Peter’s Church second Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday 21st June 2016. We heard a finance report from our treasurer and an update on the Friends of St Peter’s Church membership. There are currently 84 Friends and the account stood at £4,000 after recent expenses. The election of committee members took place and the following were re-elected:

Chair – Dr Julia Brown Vice Chair – Mr John Ingram Secretary – Mrs Stephanie Egleston Treasurer – Rod Bunyan

Other elected committee members included Mr Malcolm Brigstock, Mr James Cooper and Mrs Margaret Roberts (Madge).

12 The membership form is currently under review and will be updated soon; this will be circulated through the parish magazine in the Autumn. A newsletter will be produced for existing members to outline current and planned projects. We thank everyone who attended the meeting for re-electing the committee and for all of the suggestions for fundraising and their ideas for future projects that the Friends could support. One project that everyone should be aware of is the plan to produce a St Peter’s Church calendar for 2018. Everyone will be able to submit their photographs to the exhibition that will take place in church during St Peter’s weekend 2017. We are looking for photographs that represent the church and its activities all year round so start taking your photos now.

St Peter’s weekend 2016

Saturday 25th June - We ran a very enjoyable “Come and Sing” at St Peter’s Church. We focused on hymn suggestions that had been received throughout May and June. Two hours of singing was followed by a lovely lunch – with grateful thanks to Jane Ward and Margaret Matthews for the refreshments. Four of the hymns were sung twice with the second run through being recorded. We plan to work on a number of hymns for the production of a CD in the future. The church tower was open to visitors in the afternoon for guided tours. Thank you to all the bell ringers who gave their time to show people around. There was also a table top sale and an opportunity to buy plants, bric-a-brac and also copies of the “From the Edge” DVD.

The table top sale is still in church, so if you want a copy of the DVD, postcards, greetings cards, a book or anything else please help yourself. There are envelopes on the table to put your money in and there is a wall safe to put the envelope in – thanks in advance for your generosity.

St Peter’s C of E School fete 2nd July

The Chair of St Peter’s School governors invited the Friends of St Peter’s Church to have an exhibition stand at their school fete on Saturday 2nd July. Unfortunately we were unable to join them this year due to a lack of available volunteers. We look forward to being able to participate next year.

PARISH WARDEN’S REPORT

By courtesy of PC Lee Thomas of “our” Safer Neighbourhood Team, I can advise that there were several reports of crime in, or near, Edgmond. Fortunately only one was in the village. That was a burglary which occurred on 3rd June in Chetwynd Road. Entry to the property was through a rear kitchen window, after it was broken. A neighbour went to investigate and may have disturbed the offenders.

The other reports of crime concerned nearby locations:- 7th June, near Howle – farm outbuilding broken into overnight and a £20,000 “Skid Steer” machine was stolen. 22nd June – Adeney - two decorative sandstone troughs and some stone mushroom shaped garden ornaments were stolen during the day. 26th June, – burglary in the early hours, during which a set of house keys were taken but then discarded.

Also in June:

Two speed enforcement exercises have been carried out along the 40 mph section of the B5062 on the edge of the village. Six drivers were stopped and advised of their speed, although none were fast enough to warrant formal enforcement. These exercises will continue, together with some in the village.

Two recently advised “scams” are worthy of mention. 1. The advertisement of non-existent vehicles for purchase on line with payment via Amazon Payments and/or Amazon Flexible Payment Service through an “ESCROW” account” (which Amazon does NOT provide). 2. The placing of false letter boxes in residential properties to obtain incoming mail. Such mail is then used to set up various lines of credit with finance providers in the name of the innocent resident. (More information on the above scams can be found on the village website.)

Found in Sports Pavilion

Some money was found in the Sports Pavilion recently. Although reported to the Police and and Wrekin Council, no one has yet claimed it. If it is yours, please ring 01952-813125 and say exactly where you left it and how much it was, and I will gladly return it. If it remains unclaimed, it will be donated to a charity or similar organisation.

NEWS FROM EDGMOND PARISH COUNCIL

Edgmond Parish Council has been accepted for a second project to tackle dog fouling in the Borough. The first was in Newport and it was very successful. Local residents have kindly agreed to lead this project and to identify significant areas of concern where dog fouling on the roads and footpaths is a problem. We have included numerous articles in the magazine and have, in the past, put up notices. We have even engaged the Dog Warden to speak with some dog walkers, but we still have a serious problem within the village. Everyone is aware of the dangers of dog fouling, particularly to older and younger people. We want to work with you and encourage everyone to pick up after their dog and to put the dog poo bags in a bin, if there are no nearby bins, please take it home.

The project will focus on two areas of the village. A deep clean will take place where all evidence of dog fouling is removed. Special ‘We are Watching You’ signs will be erected. The volunteers are provided with spray paint, they patrol the areas regularly and highlight the waste whenever it appears. This raises awareness and often dogs are identified by local people and reported. At the end of the project period, the dog waste is collected and you will be surprised at how much it amounts to – this is then used as publicity.

Watch Out – You are being watched!

Neighbourhood Development Plan

Edgmond Parish Council has taken a major step forward in representing the community by embarking on the process to create a Neighbourhood Development Plan for the Parish.

At a recent meeting, Councillors resolved to designate the area for the Plan as the Parish Boundary and a submission has been sent to Telford & Wrekin Council. Telford & Wrekin Council will consult widely on this proposal which takes around 8 weeks.

15 During this time, your Parish Councillors have set up a Steering Group and we have already received a number of offers of support from members of the community to work with us.

Over recent months, we have had no alternative but to be re-active to Planning Applications that have been submitted. The creation of our own Neighbourhood Plan will ensure that we, on behalf of the community are pro-active.

Telford & Wrekin has now submitted its proposals for a Local Plan and this will be considered by an Independent Inspector in the coming months. Their plan gives some reassurance to our Parish that development will be restricted and it clearly sets out the importance of the Conservation Area. However, our local Neighbourhood Plan will take this one step further and we can include more detail relating to the views of the people that live here.

At a drop in session held in the Village Hall on Saturday 2nd July, we were pleased to welcome local residents who attended and shared their views with us. Everyone’s views are important and there are many ways that you can let us know. Attend Parish Council meetings, website, email, telephone, letter, PACT box situated at the Village Hall or you can talk to your local Councillors – please do take time to get in touch, we need to know what you think.

In order to prepare a draft Plan, which will be circulated to all residents in the Parish, we have agreed five headings. These are:-

 Housing and Development  Local Character  Green Areas and Public Spaces  Getting Around  Amenities and Employment

This is really important, please do get in touch and discuss what is important to you. We will be holding further workshops, drop in sessions, information events – if you would like to be more involved, please contact me and be added to an email distribution list so that we can keep you informed.

Thank you for taking the time to read this; we look forward to hearing from you.

Events

Our First Farmers Market proved to be a success with lots of stalls and lots of customers. It was unfortunate that the signs that we put up on Cheney Hill to advise of the Market were taken down several times in the week prior to the Market - and indeed on Sunday itself. Notwithstanding, we had a large crowd and a healthy profit.

We had another successful Quiz Night raising about £600 for our funds. This will undoubtedly be put to good use in the near future as building work has started on the extension. The diggers moved in on Wednesday June 29th and have made progress on the groundworks. If you are visiting the site, do take care as although the dangerous bits are fenced off, some areas - particularly the car park - will be a little uneven. Do not attempt to get inside the barriers as this is a "building site".

17

We celebrated the Queen's 90th birthday at two events at the Village Hall. First was an Afternoon Tea on June 9th when we handed out cake and Prosecco and toasted the Queen at 3.00 pm. The second was the Quiz Night when we decked the hall in Union Jack bunting and made the theme a "Royal Party". Both events were well attended and very successful.

Our next event is a Summer Fun Day with Farmers Market on Sunday September 4th. Enjoy a day of fun and games before the new school term begins. Details of this event are available from Anne Green (01952 814312) or Denise Bishop (01952 812850).

Look out for future Table Top Sales. The first one is on 23rd July, but there will probably be more during the year.

Thanks

First of all we would like to thank Georgina Edge for her time over the last two years putting together the article for the Parish Magazine. Unfortunately due to family and other pressures she has decided to resign.

The Village Hall Committee would also like to thank everyone who supports us, either by attending events or giving up their time to help out, and we would especially like to mention:- Sam and Laura at The Lion for their recent donation via the Bonus Ball Competition they run. Harper Adams University College for their donations of various items, and for cutting the grass on the field throughout the summer. Derek Longstaff who hosted an auction at The Lamb and gave us a large donation. Edgmond Landscapes for cutting the hedges around the Village Hall.

Further details of all events are available at www.edgmondvillagehall.org.

U3A NEWPORT (SHROPSHIRE) BRANCH

The June meeting of the Newport U3A took place on Tuesday 21st June and 51 members attended. Mr David Bartley entertained us with an afternoon of Black Country poetry and banter. The poems and anecdotes covered a wide range of topics including aliens, films, false teeth, local comedians, bus drivers, scuba diving, budgies and snow – in fact nothing was immune from his comment and astute observation. There was much laughter resulting from his presentation and it was enjoyed by all.

Future meetings:

Tuesday 16th August – Rex Key will present a history of the clay pipe industry in and around .

Tuesday 20th September – Neil Rushton will talk about the geology of the Ironbridge Gorge.

The venue for all the above U3A meetings is the Royal British Legion Club, Audley Road, Newport. The meetings commence at 2 pm. Admission is only £1.00 and interested visitors are always welcome.

WELCOMING BISHOP MICHAEL

The Right Reverend Michael Geoffrey Ipgrave OBE, MA, PhD is currently Bishop of Woolwich in the Diocese of Southwark. He grew up in a small village in Northamptonshire. He studied mathematics at Oriel College, Oxford, and trained for the ministry at Ripon College Cuddesdon, Oxford after a year spent working as a labourer in a factory in Birmingham.

He was ordained Deacon in 1982 and Priest in 1983 in the Diocese of Peterborough. After more than twenty years’ ministry in Leicestershire and Japan, he became Archdeacon of Southwark in 2004. He was Canon Missioner at Southwark Cathedral from 2010 to 2012, Chair of the Southwark and London Diocesan Housing Association, and Anglican Borough Dean of Southwark. Prior to this he had been Inter Faith Relations Adviser to the Archbishops’ Council and Secretary of the Churches’ Commission on Inter Faith relations.

He was awarded the OBE in the New Year’s Honours List in 2011 for services to inter faith relations in London. Since 2012 he has been Area Bishop of Woolwich in the Diocese of Southwark. He chairs the Council of Christians and Jews, and is co-Chair of the Anglican-Lutheran Society and of the Church of ’s Mission Theology Advisory Group.

20 Bishop Michael is married to Dr Julia Ipgrave, a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Humanities at Roehampton University. They have three grown up sons, one with a German and one with a Russian wife, and are looking forward to the birth of their first grandchild in Germany.

Welcoming a new Diocesan Bishop to one of the largest dioceses in the Church of England will be an opportunity for many people to pray and meet throughout North Shropshire, Staffordshire and the Black Country. Bishop Michael will be the 99th Bishop of Lichfield and succeeds the Rt Revd Jonathan Gledhill, who retired last year.

The 'Season of Welcome' begins on 15 September as Bishop Michael prepares for his new ministry with a nine day pilgrimage of prayer and worship in parishes around the diocese.

Two formal services will take place in Lichfield Cathedral on Saturday 24 September and our links with the worldwide church will be celebrated through venues around the diocese on Sunday 25 September.

The formal Enthronement service takes place in Lichfield Cathedral at 11.00 on 24 September with an invited congregation of representatives of church and civic society; representatives of ecumenical and inter-faith bodies; and bishops of the Anglican Communion. In the afternoon +Michael will lead a special Diocesan Eucharist at which, hopefully, all parishes will be represented. This is our chance to greet our new Bishop in his Cathedral and his See City. He will want to interpret for us our mission under God and we will share the Eucharist together as the family of God in this place. The services will be streamed live via the Diocesan website and it is hoped that congregations and groups around the diocese will gather to watch and join the celebrations in spirit.

There will only be a very limited number of places for church members at the Bishop of Lichfield's welcome services on September 24th. BUT we are planning (technology permitting) to have ST ANDREW'S as a venue for ''streaming'' the services (11.00 am - the Enthronement and 3.30 pm – the Diocesan Eucharist ) on line onto a screen.

On the Saturday evening there will be a service of Reflection and Prayers at St Chad's Shrine in the Cathedral; this will be a more relaxed time with visual and interactive elements at which +Michael hopes youth groups in particular will participate.

The Cathedral's Sunday Morning Eucharist combines the ultra-local with the global faces of the church as the Cathedral's regular congregation hears from +Michael for the first time; and at the same event, Bishops and visitors from our Diocesan Link Dioceses and others from as far afield as Japan bring their greetings to the 99th Bishop of Lichfield.

On Sunday evening, churches and deaneries around the diocese will have the opportunity to make or refresh acquaintances with our link dioceses at a series of services around the Diocese as our overseas bishops enjoy our diocesan hospitality. 21

And finally – our Rector writes …

A WELCOME

At a recent Clergy Study Day, amongst other papers we were handed the following paper which I thought I might share with you. It comes from Coventry Cathedral, but it could apply to any church, anywhere.

A CATHEDRAL WELCOME

We extend a special welcome to those who are single, married, divorced, widowed, gay, confused, filthy rich, comfortable or dirt poor. We extend a special welcome to wailing babies and excited toddlers.

We welcome you whether you can sing like Pavarotti or just growl quietly to yourself. You’re welcome here if you’re just browsing, just woken up or just got out of prison. We don’t care if you’re more Christian than the Archbishop of Canterbury, or haven’t been to church since Christmas ten years ago.

We extend a special welcome to those who are over 60 but not grown up yet, to teenagers who are growing up too fast. We welcome keep-fit Mums, football dads, starving artists, tree-huggers, latte-sippers, vegetarians, junk-food eaters. We welcome those who are in recovery or still addicted. We welcome you if you’re having problems, are down in the dumps or don’t like organised religion. (we’re not that keen on it either)

We offer a welcome to those who think the earth is flat, work too hard, don’t work, can’t spell, or are here because granny is visiting and wanted to come to the Cathedral.

We welcome those who are inked, pierced, both or neither. We offer a special welcome to those who could use a prayer right now, had religion shoved down their throat as kids or got lost in the city centre and wound up here by mistake. We welcome pilgrims, tourists, seekers, doubters ….and YOU!
