1 ' ' Cimabue's Madonna carried through Florence 1 A l:oan by Her 11wst Gracious Majesty the Queen, tQ the Royal Cambrian Academy. For years previoue to 1855, Sir Fren. Leighton, Ba.rt ., P.R. a., Hon. lll:embe1• R. C. A., had b~en iu R-o~e devo~ing the bulk of his time f,ry painting the great picture of Cuna.hue s M.. d . onna. hei:ng carried in procession through the streets of Flore~ce. The large number of figures necessary for the subJe~t me.de this task of oompo~ition e. difficult one; the ~t of pu_blio homage paid to his Art, the enthusiitsm 11,wnkened lD the ~da of the Florentines by the skill of the earliest of the great Itahe.n masters, harl fired the young :Artist's fancy, 9;nd he ~eso~ved the.fl he too would do his pal't 1n commemorating the tnumph of Otmn.but). 12 No. ROOM. The painting of the Madonna by Cima.hue obtained a reputation for exceeding all earJjer pictures. "'!'he picture was hue to the front. This is added to bre,i,k tho line bP.tween the for the Chmcb of Santa. Maria Novella where it is su;,pended on white of the bier and the dress 0£ Cima.hue. Above is the high between tho Chapel of the Ttucelhi family and that of the pictnre of the Madonna, seen of course sidew01ys, or in profile by Bardi of Vernio. the spectator, but the perspective and treatment of whicn1 is This pi.:ture is of far larger size than any that had been absolutely perfect; it hangs a little forwa~d from a gold frame, painted down to a.bout 1780, and the angels surrounding it and has a gold background of its own. On this is painted the make it evident that although Cimgbue still retained the Virgin, in blue, holding on h(lr hi.pa child, who is in red. From Greek manner, be was nevertheless approaching the modes of the size of the picture, the angels, who made such au im outline and general method of modern times. Thus it happened pression on the l<'loreotines, are not visible. The picture is th-l.t this work was an object of so mua.nte play. Giotto, when a, boy, attended sheep in the fields, where leaning quietly against a. tree, and looking on witb the sardonic he used t<, amuse himself by drawing his flock after 1bo life upon and ,vo.ndering gaze of the man who had been in hell. sand. Cimabue tmvelling that way, found him at his ,vork and Sllllh "as the picture on which so much of Sir Frederick's conceived so good an opinion of his genius that he prevailed fnture was staked, and which very nearlv came to a prematnre encl. with his fatl1er to let hiiu go to Florence and be brought up spite of tho time and labour he bad given it the day rapidly under him. He became the greatest Artist of his time. .Behind approached when it would have to be dispatched to F:ngh,nd, and comes what we may call th bier, covel'ed in wrute, with a beau. something st.II remained to be done. The artist worked his fully painted piece of colour, of wbich red is the predominating hardest, but with ull his efforts the morning of the sending in day arrived, and the bea.uUfnl scarlet coat, of which we hs.ve spoken, 1 No, 1 ROO!\.f.
