Bucks County Historical Society 2013 Annual Report Photo: Carla Klouda

It is the mission of the Bucks County Historical Society to educate and engage its many audiences in appreciating the past and to help people find stories and meanings Mission relevant to their lives – both today and in the future. Photo: Carla Klouda Chairman’s Message They say a picture is worth a thousand words. If that’s true, then the images of the Mercer Museum, Castle, and the fascinating collections contained within can speak volumes about the people and places of our past. In fact, telling the stories of our past is what we do best.

In 2011, we completed a major expansion of the Mercer Museum. Over the past three years, we have seen many new exhibits, programs, and learning opportunities in the new wing, demonstrating the depth and breadth of historical topics available for exploration. With each new year, the energy and excitement around the Mercer Museum and Fonthill Castle keep growing. Just ask my fellow Trustees, or any of the legions of volunteers. We are blessed to have these places and artifacts in our community. The concrete castles and singular collections Photo: Allure West Studios West Photo: Allure give our community a unique sense of place, making Bucks County truly unlike any other place in the world.

As Chairman of the Board of Trustees, it is my honor to lead a group of incredibly passionate volunteers and professionals, dedicated to preserving the stories of our past, for the benefit of our future. It is also my honor to share our deepest gratitude to those who have given their time, their talent, or their treasure (and often all three!) to make the Mercer Museum and Fonthill Castle as relevant, exciting, and dynamic as they are today. Without the embrace of thousands of donors, volunteers, members and visitors, we could not continue to tell the stories.

So, again, I say “thank you,” and we look forward to seeing you at one of our exciting programs or events coming soon!

William D. Maeglin 1 Director’s Message As Executive Director of the Bucks County Historical Society, one of my most enjoyable tasks is the opportunity to introduce new friends to this wonderful institution. The National Historic Landmark Castles—Mercer Museum and Fonthill—are mesmerizing structures to first time visitors. I never tire of seeing expressions of amazement when visitors walk into Mercer Museum’s Central Court and look up to find a hanging whale boat and so many artifacts of our cultural heritage, or to watch as Fonthill visitors anxiously await every turn in the house to uncover another of Henry Mercer’s creations.

Today, the Mercer Museum and Library & Fonthill Castle welcome more than 100,000 visitors annually. As leading cultural destinations, our sites support more than 8,000 school children Photo: Allure West Studios West Photo: Allure annually in their pursuit of history exploration. We offer enriching opportunities as we present four to six exhibitions every year, bringing wonderful traveling exhibits and discovery to so many individuals throughout Bucks County and the surrounding region. The Library serves as an unparalleled resource for thousands of researchers, teachers, archivists and genealogists. One cannot drive through Doylestown in the summer without seeing young explorers enjoying Wizarding Camp. We help future leaders build their creations through our Mercer Robotics classes, and, what would Fourth of July be without the fun filled activities at Fonthill’s old-fashioned celebration!

Henry Mercer had a vision and a dream he wanted to share with future generations. His quest to impart knowledge and showcase history from a new point of view is at the center of everything we do. Our 2013 report highlights our achievements in education, preservation, exhibitions and community services. These achievements are made possible because of the support we receive from our members, donors, contributors and volunteers. Together, we are making a difference, every day!

Douglas C. Dolan Mercer Museum and Library Programs and Exhibitions The Mercer Museum generated a wide variety of programs for school, camp, adult and general audiences in 2013. Providing both on-and off-site learning experiences for children in the Greater Philadelphia area and in New Jersey, our school and youth group programs included our popular Lego™ Robotics and the “Wild World of Wizarding” camps, the long-running Dolls’ Day Out, and the Bucks-Mont Regional History Day competition. The museum sponsored special programs for a variety of audiences during African-American History Month, Presidents’ Day, the Halloween season, and the December holidays, plus annual walking tours, genealogy workshops, craft activities, and storytelling programs. We produced and scheduled an array of programs related to our special exhibitions, with numerous speakers, artists, performers and others enhancing shows related to women’s baseball, the Civil War, and traditional Mayan culture.

We continued our program of special exhibitions in the Martin & Warwick Foundation Galleries with two traveling and two internally generated exhibits. These included, Linedrives and Lipstick: The Untold Story of Women’s Baseball; Turning Points: Civil War, 1863-1864; The Mystery of the Mayan Medallion; and our annual, Under the Tree: A Century of Holiday Toys. Both traveling exhibits, Mayan Medallion and Linedrives and Lipstick, were augmented with artifacts and graphics from the museum collections. Several of the shows also featured special “in-gallery” programs. Civil War re-enactors appeared as “people of the past,” engaging visitors in the Turning Points exhibit, while our popular Expedition Cart – staffed by volunteers – provided family activities related to the Mayan Medallion and Under the Tree exhibits. The museum’s exhibit program extends also into the original Mercer “castle,” where our long-term Animals on the Loose Photo: Allure West Studios West Photo: Allure Fuego Nuevo gallery – appealing especially to pre-school children – received a facelift. Of course, the 2 performs at Mayan permanent Mercer galleries, with their eccentric and dense displays of tools and other Medallion preview reception artifacts, remained a major draw for museum audiences.

2013 Highlights: • More than 6,200 school children, ranging from pre-school to high school, experienced Mercer Museum programs such as “Log House Life,” “Simple Machines,” “A Civil War Soldier’s Life,” and “Meet Henry Mercer.” • The presentation of two original theatrical productions related to the Civil War and Underground Railroad to 1,300 8th graders from four Central Bucks School District Middle Schools. • The scripting and debut of a new first-person outreach program, “Meet Henry Mercer,” featuring an actor-interpreter portraying the Mercer Museum’s founder – a program designed for both youth and adult audiences. • The development and launch of a new website for the Bucks and Montgomery Counties’ National History Day regional competition, with funding provided by an “IPromise” grant from the firm Volpe-Koenig P.C. Intellectual Property Law. • The installation and opening of the first major interpretive exhibit in the museum’s changing galleries based on new and original research, Interpreter teaches children about Log House Life featuring numerous artifacts and documents from the collections. Turning Points: Civil War, 1863-1864, focused on Bucks County’s experience on the war front and on the home front during the Civil War. • Collaborations with the Civil War Institute at Manor College, and the Mexican Cultural Center in Philadelphia, to present programming related to the Turning Points and Mayan Medallion exhibits respectively. Appropriate to our mission, the collections of the Mercer Museum and Library reflect and illustrate three broad aspects of our past: (1) Bucks County history and culture up to the present day, (2) the history of everyday life and work in pre industrial America, to circa 1850, and (3) the contributions and achievements of , archaeologist, collector, architect, tile maker and museum founder.

The continued stewardship of the collections is a major responsibility of the Bucks County Historical Society, and an important task for both curatorial and library staff. Stewardship involves both the care and preservation of collections, as well as improving documentation and providing access to collections information for researchers and other users – both on- and off-site. In 2013, for example, 1,100 researchers visited the Mercer Library, while another 1,100 received answers to their queries by mail, telephone and e-mail.

Ongoing stewardship activities include maintenance of our historic and other structures, processing and cataloging collections, photographic documentation, housekeeping, inventory maintenance, tracking object movement, and monitoring environmental conditions to name a few. Many new acquisitions to the collections are received annually and must be accessioned and entered into the institution’s database. Researchers may gain access to information about a portion of the collections through the museum’s website, via the “RolloPAC” on-line catalog portal. In 2013, projects were completed to catalog and re-house the library’s collection of 155 rolled wall maps, to relocate 350 woodworking tools to improved off-site storage, and to acquire a flat file cabinet for storage of original museum floor plans and blueprints.

2013 Highlights: • The conservation treatment of nearly 50 Civil War artifacts and artwork from the collections for the Turning Points exhibit, with funds provided primarily through an “Adopt-an Artifact” initiative, and 3 through the 2013 Cocktails at the Castle special mission appeal. • The accessioning of approximately 70 new acquisitions into the museum collections, and more than 550 items into the holdings of the library and archives. • A comprehensive survey of collections, and development of an updated long-range conservation and preventive care plan for the museum and library, through a grant from the Philadelphia Stewardship Program of the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts. • Hosting the annual meeting of the Rushlight Club, an organization for collectors of historical lighting devices. Curatorial and Library staff provided access to the museum’s lighting collections for participants. • Loaning artifacts to exhibits at the National Constitution Center, the Landis Valley Farm Museum, and the National Museum of American Jewish History. Continuing exhibits at the National Building Museum and the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation also featured objects from the Mercer collections.

Added to the Mercer Collection in 2013: US Steel, Fairless Works Engraved Commemorative Plate, 1994, countertop display case for Landreth Company Seed Packets, Bristol, Bucks County c. 1910, Jacquard Coverlet, woven by John Kaufman of Hilltown Township, Bucks County, 1840, and Rohm & Haas Baseball Uniform, 1930s-1960s. Fonthill Castle Programs

As part of our efforts to preserve, research and interpret the life and legacy of Henry Mercer, Fonthill Castle presented a wide variety of programs and events in 2013. In addition to our regular guided tours, Fonthill presented Tower Tours for Families, Behind the Scenes Tours, Fonthill Park Walk, The Intimate Henry Tour, Candlelight Holiday Tours, Mercer’s Night tales and the New World Tile Tour. In order to provide non-tour opportunities to experience the castle and its story, Fonthill also offered a tile exhibit, photographic workshops, a Celtic music concert, a local beer tasting event and the Old-Fashioned Fourth of July celebration.

Students, youth groups and children with their families comprise a major portion of our visitation, and to continue our commitment to these audiences, we offered Castle Full of Treasures and The Concrete House school tours. Fonthill also presented a series of hands-on programs and workshops including Paint a Knightly Shield, Mustache Monday, Write Like a Babylonian, Towers and Trebuchets, and Make a Tile Mosaic. Archaeology and Medieval summer camps drew strong attendance, and our themed birthday parties were also very popular.

While our programs and services offered visitors extraordinary experiences, our ongoing commitment to preserve Fonthill for future guests was also an area of focus. A number of projects were undertaken, including a volunteer effort to continue to repair and paint the 200 windows in the castle, and an intern project comparing the 1930 inventory of Mercer’s 6000 books with what is currently on the shelves.

2013 Highlights: 4 • Over 28,000 guests participated in the tours, programs and events at Fonthill Castle. • More than 2,000 guests enjoyed the games, music and activities at Fonthill’s Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration. • The presentation of a tile exhibit “The Forest Calls: Tiles Inspired by Henry Mercer and Nature,” in partnership with four local ceramists. Tiles and other ceramics were placed along the main tour route of the castle in an effort to show how Henry Mercer’s ideas still resonate today with ceramic artists. • Fonthill staff participated in the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage’s Reinventing the Historic House Tour for the 21st Century workshop. The workshop provided Fonthill staff with the opportunity to explore “design your own tour” concepts to enhance the visitor experience

Inspired by the vision and creativity of Henry C. Mercer (1856-1930), the Bucks County Historical Society is a dynamic, educational organization that operates the Mercer Museum and Library, and Fonthill Castle. The organization involves its visitors in meaningful explorations of the past through active engagement with its Vision dramatic buildings and historical collections. We encourage our visitors to view history from multiple perspectives and multiple disciplines, and in relation to their own lives. The organization recognizes that it must offer innovative and participatory experiences in order to involve diverse segments of local, regional and national audiences. Our museums and library strive to offer the most exciting, engaging and unique history experiences in the Delaware Valley. The organization pledges its commitment to the highest ethical and professional standards. Watch over it, guard it, save it, prune it and water it until it spreads its noble shade not only over this little town and this state...but over the whole nation.” ~Henry Chapman Mercer Photo: Nic Barlow
