Welcome to BritishFlora’s InformaƟ on Pack. Our species lisƟ ng includes comprehensive informaƟ on on each species such as fl owering colour, height and fl ower period. We include our full range of products, pot and tray sizes. A technical note and explanaƟ on of our tray and pot sizes provides product informaƟ on for our customers. It is our intenƟ on that this inclusion will make our client’s task of quoƟ ng for projects and jobs much quicker and easier and our sales and technical team are there to help with any further queries you may have.

2 BritishFlora has always been at the forefront of innovati on and research for producing high quality Briti sh nati ve from seed and vegetati ve material. We produce commercial quanti ti es of nati ve plants for a diverse range of applicati ons such as remediati on, reed beds, wildlife habitat creati on and latt erly nati ve species green roofs.

BritishFlora off ers a complete range of Briti sh Nati ve fl ora with full Briti sh provenance that is grown exclusively on a purpose built nursery. We do not import plants in from Holland or elsewhere and we guarantee that all our plants are grown by us. We produce Nati ve Wildfl owers, Grasses and Sedges, Aquati c and Marginals including vast quanti ti es of Phragmites communis. We also grow submergents or oxygenati ng plants, including Nati ve Water lilies.

As always at BritishFlora we only grow Briti sh Nati ve plants that are derived from fully known Briti sh provenance, either from our own seed bank or from trusted fellow Flora Locale subscribing sources. We also collect seed and vegetati ve material with full permissions from various organisati ons such as the Environment Agency and Local Authoriti es. We pride ourselves on our commitment to enhance our environment and preserve our indigenous fl ora for generati ons to come, be it by remediati on, habitat creati on or nati ve species green roofs.

In 2012 BritishFlora completed its own in-house environmental policy by switching to PEAT FREE COMPOST for all our sowings and transplanti ng. We have researched and trialled the make up of our new compost alongside Alfa Aggregates and now have a formulati on that gives consistent germinati on, controlled growth and is importantly, environmentally friendly. Our compost contains a starter charge ferti lizer that ensures a controlled release of nutrients to ensure rapid establishment be they plugs or more mature plants.

We have a Technical Team that can assist you with planti ng details, species choice for specifi c areas and have a dedicated Ecologist and Technical Manager, who are available for site visits. We off er highly professional expert advice and have a wealth of knowledge covering all aspects of habitat management, planti ng advice and problem solving. Our experti se in nati ve species green roofi ng is well known in the industry and we conti nue to see a rapid expansion of this arm of our business.

Our Sales Team are highly dedicated, with strong people skills and are there to make your life easier. BritishFlora strives to be the best we can be and we believe in the products we sell and why we sell them. We are driven by more than the need to make a profi t and that makes us stand out from the crowd.

BritishFlora stands for quality, integrity and a commitment to the environment.

3 TRAY and POT SIZES AND EXPLANATION

We aim to make our customers lives easier by using multi-cell trays and root trainers to reduce the number of individual pots for ease of handling both on our nursery and by the end user. Much thought has gone into the choice of trays to propagate, grow on, transplant and finally ship to the customer. We have taken into account the volume of substrate (Peat Free from 2012), the area of optimum root growth and thus area and the encouragement of strong root formation.

Multi-trays are easy to pick up and put down, they lend themselves to automation in filling and seeding and they reduce labour extensively when planting out. All our trays are designed to fit

Bri Ɵ shFlora Wildfl ower 65cc Plug 84 Cell Tray: Tray is 52 x 31cm. The depth of each cell is 4cm and there are 620 cells to 1m2. Each cell holds 65cc of substrate. These trays are ideal for wildfl owers and seedlings that may require further transplanti ng. We have found that plugs produced in these trays make rapid root formati on and produce a healthy disease free plant that will establish well when planted out either for meadow enhancement or green roofs.

28cc Leucanthemum vulgare plug showing uniform, strong root mass.

BriƟ shFlora 110cc Jumbo Plug 77 Cell Tray. Tray is 56.5 x 36cm. The depth of each cell is 6.2cm and there are 379 cells to 1 m2. Each cell holds 110cc of substrate. These trays are ideal for the producti on of jumbo plugs and for stock items used for the coir log industry as the robust yet manageable plugs can easily be pushed into predrilled holes. Crops such as, Phragmites, , Juncus and Phalaris lend themselves to this regime with rapid growth occurring in the spring and summer. Jumbo plugs of any species can be ordered and there is an increasing demand for this size plant

A 5cm 77 Jumbo plug of Ajuga reptans produced from cutti ngs ready to be shipped.

BriƟ shFlora 7cm 45 Root Trainer tray: Tray is 53 x 30cm. The depth of each cell is 15.7cm and there are 252 cells per 1 m2. Each cell holds 233cc of substrate. These trays are ideal for plants that require rapid and sustained root growth. The tapering cell encourages strong root development ensures that plants get away quickly and thrive. Carex, Juncus, Phalaris, Lythrum and other species also do extremely well in the 45 cell format and it directly replaces 7cm pots. It saves space, ti me and importantly labour. When planti ng in shallow water in the case of Phragmites, the tray will fl oat in a fl at bott omed crate increasing the hourly rate of planti ng substanti ally when compared to planti ng single 7cm pots.

BritishFlora 7cm 40 Cell tray: Tray is 52.5 x 31.5cm. The depth of each cell is 6.5cm and there are 250 cells to 1 m2. Each cell holds 190cc of substrate. These trays are used to grow mainly aquatic plants where root growth is often confined to the surface of the substrate or needs longer to establish fully. Plants such as Butomus, Caltha, Myosotis and Apium etc do exceptionally well in the 40 tray size which directly replaces a 7cm pot.

BritishFlora 9cm 28 Root Trainer tray: This tray is 53 x 30cm. The depth of each cell is 15cm and there are 176 cells to 1 m2. Each cell holds 370cc of substrate. These trays are a direct replacement for 9cm individual pots where strong root development is required for example Phragmites or Typha. All 28 trays have 1 year old plus species.

BritishFlora 9cm Shuttle trays: These carrying trays with flush rimmed pots are designed to hold 18 individual pots and are specifically used to hold larger size wildflowers such as ^ƚĂĐŚLJƐ officinalis, Succisa pratensis and Leucanthemum vulgare etc. Other species can be grown to order including native flowering bulbs.

A 7cm 45 Root Trainer tray of 1 year old Phragmites communis showing extensive root growth and fully developed new shoots. These are ideal for Spring and Autumn planting and quickly establish themselves. The tapering cell has encouraged roots to the bottom of the tray and these plants will get away very quickly once planted.

Our plant species are available in whole trays in the following formats. The minimum order for a single species in a plug tray is 1ϰϰ x 2ϴcc and for a root trainer is 77 x 5cm, 45 x 7cm or 28 x 9cm. For single species of multi-cell trays the minimum order is 40 x 7cm and for 9cm pots in shuttle trays is 18 x 9cm. For 1L, 2L, 5L and 10L pots minimum order quantities may apply.

7 Greenwich Peninsula Regeneration Area Biodiverse greenroof awarded ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating

Lend Lease commissioned BritishFlora to install a biodiverse greenroof on a prestigious building in the Greenwich Peninsula Regeneration Area.

BritishFlora supplied and installed over 40 species of British Native wildflowers, a diverse wildflower blanket and rockery areas to provide suitable habitat for con- servation priority species. Bat boxes and black redstart boxes were installed on the roof and native sympa- thetic planting for these species will further encourage priority species to this habitat.

BritishFlora have been appointed to provide a mainte- nance contract and long-term botanical monitoring of the site, in addition to monitoring for priority conserva- tion species. This monitoring will provide much needed ecological data on greenroof habitats and provide infor- mation on the effective methods of vegetation instal- Planting wildflower plugs into greenroof lation on greenroofs. substrate

8 The habitat and ecological enhancement works on the greenroof gained maximum Land- scape and Ecology Credits, and lead to an excellent BREEAM rating awarded to this devel- opment. This biodiverse greenroof will act as a flagship for the Greenwich Regeneration Area, where biodiverse roofs will play a significant role in the landscape and ecological en- hancement commitments within this Regeneration area.

BritishFlora designed a sustainable solution for enhanced aquatic planting in the hard engineered waterways at Hampton Court. This is part of a wider pond and waterway restoration scheme across the Park to im- prove biodiversity, water quality, erosion prevention and aesthetics of these formal and natural water ways across Hampton Court.

As an initial trial a 20m section of marginal planting was installed along Klon Dyke Hampton Court staff installing coir rolls using planted coir rolls, fagots and back- filling with site won silt taken from Klon Dyke. This backfilled area was planted with a diverse mix of marginal plants.

Finished backfill planting behind coir rolls at Klon Dyke Assembling floating islands

10 BritishFlora, assisted by Verdant Sol- utions and Hampton Court staff, in- stalled 16 linear metres of biodiverse floating islands that lined either side of theformal Long Water Canal with the Palace providing a fine backdrop to this planting.

Biodiverse floating islands and coir rolls were planted up with bespoke British Native and local provenance biodiversity mix designed by BritishFlora and were pre-established in our wet beds on the Floating Biodiverse Islands, Long Water Canal with nursery. Training of Hampton Court staff Hampton Court Palace in the background by BritishFlora technical team in mar- ginal planting techniques will ensure the sustainability and feasibility of further marginal planting throughout Hampton Court with ongoing support from the BritishFlora team.

As a result of these works further marginal planting enhancements have been undertaken in the Paddocks area of Hampton Court. Through consultation with BritishFlora Hampton Court Grounds Team restored an area of eroded bank using coir logs and backfilled with silt from the ditch thus increasing depth and narrowing the waterway to increase flow rates and enhance macrophyte diversity. The backfilled area was planted with a Native biodi- verse mix provided by BritishFlora.

The following Seed Mixtures are bespoke blends of 100% perennial wildflowers (unless otherwise stated) of British Provenance seed specific to a variety of soil and environmental conditions. These mixes represent natural plant communities and have been developed over many years based on our experience in the field of habitat creation, ecology and horticulture. We are always looking to develop our seed mixtures and increase the diversity of species available to enhance the restoration our flower rich habitats and our mixes reflect this dedication.

BFS Seed Mixtures can be also be ordered as Grass & Wildflower Mixtures and our technical team can advise you on the proportion of grasses to wildflowers required that is suitable for your specific project and site conditions.
