Book History in Australia since 1950 Katherine Bode Preprint: Chapter 1, Oxford History of the Novel in English: The Novel in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the South Pacific since 1950. Edited by Coral Howells, Paul Sharrad and Gerry Turcotte. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2017. Publication of Australian novels and discussion of this phenomenon have long been sites for the expression of wider tensions between national identity and overseas influence characteristic of postcolonial societies. Australian novel publishing since 1950 can be roughly divided into three periods, characterized by the specific, and changing, relationship between national and non-national influences. In the first, the 1950s and 1960s, British companies dominated the publication of Australian novels, and publishing decisions were predominantly made overseas. Yet a local industry also emerged, driven by often contradictory impulses of national sentiment, and demand for American-style pulp fiction. In the second period, the 1970s and 1980s, cultural nationalist policies and broad social changes supported the growth of a vibrant local publishing industry. At the same time, the significant economic and logistical challenges of local publishing led to closures and mergers, and—along with the increasing globalization of publishing—enabled the entry of large, multinational enterprises into the market. This latter trend, and the processes of globalization and deregulation, continued in the final period, since the 1990s. Nevertheless, these decades have also witnessed the ongoing development and consolidation of local publishing of Australian novels— including in new forms of e-publishing and self-publishing—as well as continued government and social support for this activity, and for Australian literature more broadly. -

My argument is that the sense of displacement and preoccupation with "other" worlds which characterise these novels reflect a national tradition which positions Australian life at the "edge" of a culturally and politically dominant "centre." Such a perspective is not so much geographical as discursive; Australia was first defined, after all, through a European discourse which assumed its own centrality. -

These spaces are no longer understood in temporal tenns, but as discursive formations; rather than one spatial moment succeeding an other in time, each dominant moment, as it emerges in history through discourses of power, is shadowed by its radical or familial alterities.1 The understanding that postcolonial conditions be considered in terms of co-existent formations of power rather than in terms of a linear temporal shift perhaps has a particular relevance to ex-settler colonies like Australia, where the triangulated relation between the governing body, the colonial settlers and the indigenous dispossessed forged a complex social hier archy. -

Reviewed by Jean-François VERNAY Tim Winton has written his way to become the darling of Australian readers who enjoy his rich prose evocative of the south-western landscape which he calls home. He can be regarded as a left-leaning writer who has a close affinity with the people and es- pecially the land which he celebrates in his stories. His coastal narratives invariably viv- idly depict rural communities functioning in harmony with the beach culture. Winton’s focus is domestic, if not personal, fathoming the cultural and psychological impact of the Australian land. -

<<Please read the copyright notice at the end of this article>> Robert Dixon: Tim Winton, Cloudstreet and the field of Australian Literature Author: Robert Dixon Title: Tim Winton, Cloudstreet and the field of Australian Literature Journal: Westerly Imprint: 2005, Volume 50, November, Pages 240-260 Let me begin by saying what I'm not going to do in this paper: I'm not going to do what used to be called a “close reading” of Tim Winton's Cloudstreet. I'm not going to wheel out a theoretical approach through which to interpret the text, as if the reading I could produce by that means were somehow more authoritative than any other. Instead, what I will do is situate Winton's career and this particular novel in what can be called the field of Australian literature. In using this term field, I mean to indicate the whole system involved in the production and reception of Australian literature. This is now a very broad spectrum of institutions, personnel, practices and values that is surprisingly complex and diverse. It is now so extensive that it isn't even confined to Australia. And academic literary criticism — in the sense of theoretically-driven textual analysis — is only one part of that field. Many would say that it's not even the most important part. This idea of a “field” derives from the work of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu.1 Much of Bourdieu's work was done on French art culture of the nineteenth century, but it has been widely used in recent years as a tool for thinking about how other culture industries work, including print culture, cinema and music. -

BOOK REVIEWS Jean-François Vernay, Panorama du roman australien des origines à nos jours, Paris, Hermann, 2009, ISBN 978-2-7056-6803-7, 250p., rrp 25 €. Born in New Caledonia of an Australian mother and a French father, Dr Jean- François Vernay is a very active young scholar specialising in Australian literature. He recently completed his doctorate at the Université de Toulouse- Le Mirail with Professor Xavier Pons, where he carried out research on the novelists Peter Carey and Christopher Koch, and his thesis on Koch was published in New York in 2007.1 He has also published articles and book reviews on contemporary Australian fiction in journals such as AUMLA and Antipodes and serves as an international advisor and board member for the Australian Literary Compendium online project.2 He is currently teaching at the Institut universitaire de formation des maîtres in Nouméa. This new publication, the first survey of its kind to appear in Europe, is an ambitious attempt to give the French reader a thorough overview of the history and extent of the Australian novel. Though necessarily selective, the book is scholarly in its approach and does its best to avoid becoming merely a list of books and authors. In an interview published in The Age earlier this year,3 Dr Vernay says he did not want to establish a canon, but to put readers in a position where they can make their own choices: ‛I thought it would be a novelty in Australia that the book is a continuous account of Australian fiction trying to break up the evolution of the novel into six different stages and also give a sense of unity and some explanation for the metamorphosis of the Australian novel over the years. -

Australian Literature and China, Past, Present and Future ACIAC 12 April 2018 It isn’t every day that there is a launch of 10 volumes of Australian literature in Chinese translation. That’s without adding that the translations are the work of one man, Professor Li Yao, who is here with us. And that this is only a selection from a much longer list of some 30 Australian books he has worked on, including short stories, children’s books, Secrets and Spies by Mara Moustafine, Benang from the Heart by Kim Scott and Gould’s Book of Fish by Richard Flanagan. This is a special day. We celebrate our friend Li Yao, whose achievement earned him the Australia-China Council’s gold medal in 2008 and an honorary doctorate from the University of Sydney in 2014. Today’s event is also part of a wider commemoration. The Australia-China Council is marking its 45th anniversary this year. From the start the ACC has supported literary exchanges between Australia and China including translation and publishing. The Chinese Association of Australian Studies is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. It’s 40 years since 1988, the Australian bicentennial year, when the first Australian Studies conference in China was held, hosted by Beijing Foreign Studies University. BFSU is hosting this year’s anniversary conference in June. It is a great thing to see the continuity and growth of these initiatives, and to celebrate the many enduring relationships involved. 1 I helped organise that conference in 1988 and that’s when I first met Li Yao. -

“Twisted Ghosts” Settler Envy and Historical Resolution in Andrew McGahan’s The White Earth MARC DELREZ N A RECENTLY PUBLISHED SURVEY of contemporary Australian fiction, Andrew McGahan’s The White Earth (2004) is found to be I exemplary of the “rural apocalypse novel,” a specific subgenre which typically registers anxieties about political and religious extremism in outback Australia – usually by associating a Gothic element with the sedate routines of life in the country. It is the kind of literature where “remote country towns are imagined as parochial to the point of paranoia,”1 often with the consequence that an eruption of violence comes to disturb the mundane life-patterns or the natural rhythms apparently favoured by small-town communities. This cate- gory of apocalypse fiction in the country can be seen to encompass a number of significant recent Australian novels, such as Alexis Wright’s Carpentaria (2006), Tim Winton’s Dirt Music (2001), and Janette Turner Hospital’s Oyster (1996), but also to gesture further backwards to such classics as Ran- dolph Stow’s Tourmaline (1963), most of Thea Astley’s production, as indeed most of Patrick White’s. Projections and Utopianism in Contemporary Australian Fiction: Towards an Exploration of the Paranoid Mind In an age of anxiety where protection from putative nightmare scenarios is offered as a substitute for the dreams and hopeful promises of yesteryear, utopianism is waxing fruitful in contemporary Australian fiction. Had Australia‘s birth as a nation not been so painfully established on dissatisfaction with most of its population attempting to escape the British class system or being unenthusiastically transplanted, it would be quite unlikely that many Australian writers would have been so inclined to sprinkle their narratives with repetitive utopian impulses (see works cited section).
