SWEET SOUL MUSIC REVUE A Change Is Gonna Come It is August 1955 in Mississippi and a 14-year-old African American, Emmet Louis Till, is being dragged out of his bed by white men. They brutally torture and then drown the boy, because Emmet had whistled at the white village beauty queen and called Bye, bye babe after her. The court acquits the murderers. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, an elderly African American lady, refuses to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. She is arrested and taken to court for violating segregation laws. These events in 1955 mark the beginning of the African American Civil Rights Movement, which will grow into a proud political force under the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King. By 1968 it will have put an end to arbitrary injustice caused by racial segregation in the U.S. There have been times that I thought I couldn‘t last for long / But now I think I‘m able to carry on / It‘s been a long time coming, but I know a change is gonna come – This soul anthem, composed by Sam Cooke in 1963, speaks of the hope for change during these times. Sam himself had been arrested for offences against the laws relating to civil disorders and rioting, because he and his band had tried to check in to a “whites only” motel. Closely linked to the Civil Rights Movement, soul music delivers the soundtrack for this period of political change and upheaval in the United States. -

Reprinted with permission from Echoes of the Past magazine, Issue #116 (Summer, 2016), pp. 13 - 19. Charles Diamond Pennywell & the Fairlanes / Sunlover's Shreveport Doo Wop to West Coast Soul By Charlie Horner With Contributions from Pamela Horner city, next to New Orleans and Baton Rouge. It's always been an important music city, though it of- ten doesn't get the recognition it deserves. At one time or another, the Shreveport area was the home to important singers and musicians of all genres, including blues (Lead Belly), gospel (Ever Ready Gospel Singers), country & western (Hank Wil- liams, Johnny Horton, Jim Reeves) and rock-a-billy (Dale Hawkins), along with rhythm & blues, rock & roll and of course Cajun music. Shreveport's "Louisiana Hayride” broadcasts played a pivotal role in the music careers of both Hank Williams and Elvis Presley. Shreveport was the home of Stan Lewis's Paula, Jewel and Ronn record labels and the birthplace of Nashville music mogul Shelby Sin- gleton. Shreveport was a major hub in black mu- sic's “Chitlin’ Circuit”. Still, precious little research has been done on Shreveport's 1950’s African American music scene. Charles Pennywell began singing at the age of ten but really began to take it seriously when he got to high school. Influenced by r&b vocal groups like the Spaniels, Dells, Five Royales and Five Sat- ins, Charles and some friends formed a singing group of their own. "We were in high school Transitioning between 1950's doo wop, six- ties soul and seventies funk music is not easy. -

To Code at Home? Orget the Year
TO CODE AT HOME? orget the year. Voltair processor-induced questions about PPM encod- ing may be the biggest radio story of the last decade. Moving from di- Fary ratings to meter technology in 2007 was intended to remove much of the ambiguity from radio’s audience report card – at least in the top 50 markets. Programmers were confident in the technology and quickly adopted its les- sons, one of the most dramatic being listen- THE YEar’s ers’ aversion to talk. Spoken word formats saw declines and music format morning shows began upping their song count. And then Voltair came along. Introduced in mid-2014 by Telos, the TOP $15,000 processor was aimed at a previously unknown gap in PPM’s audio watermark- StORIES ing encoding. In short, its developers claimed that programming that was quiet, marked by silence or weak in a certain frequency range did a poor job of carrying PPM code – and that their box “enhanced the detectability.” Better encod- ing, the thinking went, meant better ratings. Radio’s response was swift. By summer 2015, hundreds of the units were in use. Even PDs who didn’t have Voltair were taking notice. “You see meter counts jump and think it’s a fluky week, but the next week it goes even higher,” one programmer told Country Aircheck. “When 6+ numbers jump two shares, that’s your first clue.” With many convinced Voltair was doing exactly what it proposed, questions turned to years of decision making based not on programming content, but its audio characteristics. “Where it gets [hairy] is when we decide not to do artist interviews and stay away from any longer talk seg- ment regardless of how compelling,” consultant Becky Brenner said in July. -

'And I Swear...' – Profanity in Pop Music Lyrics on the American Billboard Charts 2009-2018 and the Effect on Youtube Popularity
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SCIENTIFIC & TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH VOLUME 9, ISSUE 02, FEBRUARY 2020 ISSN 2277-8616 'And I Swear...' – Profanity In Pop Music Lyrics On The American Billboard Charts 2009-2018 And The Effect On Youtube Popularity Martin James Moloney, Hanifah Mutiara Sylva Abstract: The Billboard Chart tracks the sales and popularity of popular music in the United States of America. Due to the cross-cultural appeal of the music, the Billboard Chart is the de facto international chart. A concern among cultural commentators was the prevalence of swearing in songs by artists who were previously regarded as suitable content for the youth or ‗pop‘ market. The researchers studied songs on the Billboard Top 10 from 2009 to 2018 and checked each song for profanities. The study found that ‗pop‘, a sub-genre of ‗popular music‘ did contain profanities; the most profane genre, ‗Hip-hop/Rap‘ accounted for 76% of swearing over the ten-year period. A relationship between amount of profanity and YouTube popularity was moderately supported. The researchers recommended adapting a scale used by the British television regulator Ofcom to measure the gravity of swearing per song. Index Terms: Billboard charts, popularity, profanity, Soundcloud, swearing, YouTube. —————————— —————————— 1 INTRODUCTION Ipsos Mori [7] the regulator of British television said that profane language fell into two main categories: (a) general 1.1 The American Billboard Charts and ‘Hot 100’ swear words and those with clear links to body parts, sexual The Billboard Chart of popular music was first created in 1936 references, and offensive gestures; and (b) specifically to archive the details of sales of phonographic records in the discriminatory language, whether directed at older people, United States [1]. -
