SPECIAL REPORT Thursday, August 16, 2018 GO ASIA SINGAPORE TROPICAL BEAUTY HUB Singapore is transforming into a ‘City in a Garden’ with lush gardens, nature parks and state-of-the-art green architecture 2 Thursday, August 16, 2018 ¢ GO ASIA SINGAPORE ¢ NATURE CITY GROWS INTO TROPICAL BEAUTY HUB The state is packed with lush gardens, nature parks and green architecture, and is a short ferry ride from the turtles and fine beaches of neighbouring Indonesian islands, writes Michelle Lam Singapore is within easy reach of some beautiful islands and lots of homegrown nature spots. Indeed, almost half of the city state is covered in greenery, thanks to charming urban parks, unspoilt nature reserves and a Unesco World Heritage Site. The Lion City has long been the place to be if you enjoy an urban lifestyle but love nature. “Our first prime minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, [was] the architect of Singapore’s transformation,” says Masagos Zulkifli, Singapore Minister for the Environment and Water Resources. “He focused on creating a ‘Garden City’ [and] planted the first tree in 1963, which kick-started the annual Tree Planting Campaign. Today, we are building on the legacy of our pioneer leaders and transforming Singapore into a ‘City in a Garden’.” Locals and tourists also enjoy Singapore’s easy sea links to neighbouring islands such as Bintan, which is the largest island in the Riau archipelago of Indonesia. An hour’s ferry ride from Singapore, Bintan is famous for its luxurious resorts, turtles and the charming rocks of its Trikora Beach. There are also “pristine mangrove forests” on Bintan’s “meandering, clear river of Sungei Sebung”, says Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism.

3rd Quarter • 2012 They'll lay on their laurels and stick to what they've done on the next album. We're not look- ing at what anyone around us is doing. Since we're not paying attention to any of that, we were able to find unique music within ourselves. We tried to break some boundaries and stretch the genre open. We keep redefining ourselves." The musical prowess of the band members is becoming more evident beyond the metal world, as Spreitzer and Kendrick released signature ESP guitars. Boecklin has also been prominently featured in all drum magazines, namely Modern Drummer and DRUM!, as his kit work continues to turn heads. Featured Writer... Fafara concludes, "These five souls make this band what it is. It lies in the salt and pepper from everyone. What's most important is our fans get delivered the kind of music, stage show and energy that they're expecting from us. • The Underrepresentation of Female Personalities in EDM
The Underrepresentation of Female Personalities in EDM A Closer Look into the “Boys Only”-Genre DANIEL LUND HANSEN SUPERVISOR Daniel Nordgård University of Agder, 2017 Faculty of Fine Art Department of Popular Music There’s no language for us to describe women’s experiences in electronic music because there’s so little experience to base it on. - Frankie Hutchinson, 2016. ABSTRACT EDM, or Electronic Dance Music for short, has become a big and lucrative genre. The once nerdy and uncool phenomenon has become quite the profitable business. Superstars along the lines of Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Avicii, and Tiësto have become the rock stars of today, and for many, the role models for tomorrow. This is though not the case for females. The British magazine DJ Mag has an annual contest, where listeners and fans of EDM can vote for their favorite DJs. In 2016, the top 100-list only featured three women; Australian twin duo NERVO and Ukrainian hardcore DJ Miss K8. Nor is it easy to find female DJs and acts on the big electronic festival-lineups like EDC, Tomorrowland, and the Ultra Music Festival, thus being heavily outnumbered by the go-go dancers on stage. Furthermore, the commercial music released are almost always by the male demographic, creating the myth of EDM being an industry by, and for, men. Also, controversies on the new phenomenon of ghost production are heavily rumored among female EDM producers. It has become quite clear that the EDM industry has a big problem with the gender imbalance. Based on past and current events and in-depth interviews with several DJs, both female and male, this paper discusses the ongoing problems women in EDM face.
