It was founded by UBC graduates Peter Shinobu Hayashi, Edward Ouchi, Kunio Shimizu, and Thomas Shoyama, with Peter and Tommy as co-editors. Since its first issue in November 1938, it had been our voice, our guide, and our source of community news. The Japanese Canadian National Museum is happy to announce that thirty-one bound volumes of the original copies, covering most of the years from 1942 to 1977, are now deposited with them. Moe’s latest book is a gold mine of information not only for Japanese Canadians who are curious about the pioneers and their society, but also for mainstream history buffs. Everything is well documented so fastidious academics can check the sources. My only reservation is that Moe has made a number of references to NIKKEI IMAGES and although he cites the page and the volume, he does not specify the exact article, its writer, or the JCNM. Moe has assured me that he is going to see to it that copies will be deposited in various suitable locations. However, my greatest concern is that fifty years hence, tracing those articles may become very difficult unless there is clearer documentation. I urge everyone to read the book, learn about the past, and feast your eyes on the great collection of photos. Moe is to be highly commended for retrieving a most vital part of our JC history.
