JESUS’ RESURRECTION, THE EUCHARIST AND OUR BELIEF IN THE RESURRECTION OF THE BODY All through this wonderful season of Easter we hear so many accounts of the appearances of Jesus to his disciples after he has risen from the dead. They are always very touching and human encounters, such as the meeting of Jesus with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24: 13-35), or with as she tries to cling to our Lord (John 20: 11-18). In these encounters, Jesus always speaks to his disciples and gives them that special “resurrection” gift of peace: an inner tranquility of spirit that also gives strength and perspective (John 20: 19-21).

Have you also noticed though that these encounters also frequently involve Jesus eating with his disciples…? This is no coincidence, for it also helps us to make a connection between the resurrection and the Eucharist. After all, in the Eucharist, we receive the body and blood of the risen Lord and the Eucharist is sometimes referred to as “the fore- taste and promise of the paschal feast of heaven.” In every Eucharistic prayer we pray for all those who have gone before us and this helps us to recall that whenever we celebrate the Eucharist, we are joined not only with those around us in the church, or those in our parish community or Diocese, or even with all Christian around the world. No, we are also joined with those who have passed from this life to the next: the Eucharist is very much about the resurrection and the life to come.

But perhaps there is another reason why the risen Jesus so often eats with his disciples. It is to show that he is not a ghost or a spirit, but rather that he appears in his risen body. He tells his disciples this in the Gospel today. “Why are you troubled…? Why do questions arise in your hearts? Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” Then, as if to make the point further, Jesus asks them if they have anything to eat and he eats a piece of fish in front of them. A ghost or spirit would not do this presumably!

Jesus indeed rises from the dead and in this form: not just as some sort of phantasm or spirit, but bodily. This is the foundation of our faith in the resurrection of the body and not just in some sort of spiritual resurrection. As we say in the last part of the Apostles’ Creed: “I believe in the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.” We do not know exactly what sort of form this resurrected body will be, but we do believe in the resurrection of the body. When we think about it, this also makes a great deal of sense. After all, our bodies are so much part of how we experience life and people, how we react to things, and how we act. Our body is very much part of being human and we are indeed both body and spirit. We might also add that how we use our bodies here and now in this life, will certainly affect things in the life to come. For example, do I use my hands to help and welcome or to hurt or push away? Do I use my eyes to see the good and to see as Jesus sees, or do I use them to see in a bad way?

So, as we celebrate Mass, let us remember that we too not only encounter the risen Lord, but we actually receive him too under those physical appearances of bread and wine. Let us also renew our faith in the resurrection of the body and pray for our loved ones who have gone before us. Finally, let us remember that our body is indeed a “temple of the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 6: 19) and so let us always use our bodies and our senses well and for the good; that is in love and service of God and our neighbor.

Fr. Anthony
