SECTION 062023 - INTERIOR FINISH

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Section Includes:

1. Interior trim. 2. Interior paneling (for beadboard ceilings in 3113 Warsaw and 3117 Warsaw). 3. Shelving. 4. handrails.

2.1 MATERIALS, GENERAL

2.2 INTERIOR TRIM

A. Lumber Trim and Moldings for Transparent Finish (Stain or Clear Finish):

1. Species and Grade: Match existing. 2. Maximum Moisture Content: 10 percent. 3. Finger : Not allowed. 4. Gluing for Width: Allowed. Use for lumber trim wider than 6 inches. 5. Veneered Material: Not allowed. 6. Face Surface: Surfaced (smooth). 7. Matching: Selected for compatible grain and color.

B. Lumber Trim for Opaque Finish (Painted Finish):

1. Species and Grade: Any closed-grain hardwood or Eastern white , sugar pine, or western white pine. Premium, Select, or Custom grade Maximum Moisture Content: 15 percent with at least 85 percent of shipment at 12 percent or less.

C. Moldings for Opaque Finish (Painted Finish): Made to patterns included in WMMPA WM 12.

1. Softwood Moldings: WMMPA WM 4, P grade, 15 percent maximum moisture content. 2. Hardwood Moldings: WMMPA HWM 2, P-grade, 9 percent maximum moisture content. 3. Patterns: As indicated on Drawings.

2.3 PANELING

A. Hardwood Veneer Plywood Paneling: Manufacturer's stock hardwood plywood panels complying with HPVA HP-1.

1. Basis-of-Design Product: MURdesign; HDF Ultra True Primed Panel (available at Home Depot). 2. Material: HDF (high density ). 3. Style: Beadboard. 4. Size: 4 ft. by 8 feet. 5. Thickness: 1/4 inch. 6. Joint Type: Tongue and . 7. Finish: Manufacturer’s standard primed finish.

2.4 OPEN SHELVING (APARTMENT UNITS)

A. Exposed Shelving: Baltic plywood with solid-wood edge.

B. Shelf Thickness: 3/4-inch.

C. Shelf Cleats: 3/4-by-3-1/2-inch boards as specified for lumber trim for opaque finish.

D. Glue: Aliphatic-, polyurethane, or resorcinol recommended by manufacturer for general carpentry use.

E. Finish: Opaque, painted.

2.5 OPEN SHELVING (3120 WARSAW)

A. Exposed Shelving: Baltic birch plywood with solid-wood edge.

B. Shelf Thickness:

1. 5/8-inch for shelves with 1 by 2 edge. 2. For shelves indicated, provide plywood bottom between the edge trim and the cleats.

C. Shelf Cleats: 3/4-by-1/3/8-inch hardwood boards.

D. Glue: Aliphatic-resin, polyurethane, or resorcinol wood glue recommended by manufacturer for general carpentry use.

E. Finish: Opaque, painted.

2.6 INTERIOR WOOD RAILINGS

A. Wood for Opaque Finish:

1. Species: Any closed-grain hardwood. 2. Wood Moisture Content: 5 to 10 percent.

B. Handrail Brackets: Cast stainless steel with wall flange drilled for exposed anchor and with support arm for screwing to underside of rail. Size to provide 1-1/2-inch clearance between handrail and face of wall.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 PREPARATION

A. Before installing interior finish carpentry, condition materials to average prevailing humidity in installation areas for a minimum of 24 hours.

3.2 INSTALLATION, GENERAL

A. Install interior finish carpentry level, plumb, true, and aligned with adjacent materials. Use concealed shims where necessary for alignment.

1. Scribe and cut interior finish carpentry to fit adjoining work. Refinish and seal cuts as recommended by manufacturer. 2. fasteners, fill surface flush, and sand unless otherwise indicated. 3. Install to tolerance of 1/8 inch in 96 inches for level and plumb. Install adjoining interior finish carpentry with 1/32-inch maximum offset for flush installation and 1/16-inch maximum offset for installation.

3.3 STANDING AND RUNNING TRIM INSTALLATION

A. Install with minimum number of joints practical, using full-length pieces from maximum lengths of lumber available. Cope at returns, miter at outside corners, and cope at inside corners to produce tight-fitting joints with full-surface contact throughout length of joint. Use scarf joints for end-to-end joints.

3.4 INSTALLATION OF PANELING

A. Hardboard Paneling: Install according to manufacturer's written instructions.

1. Leave 1/4-inch gap to be covered with trim at top, bottom, and openings. 2. Butt adjacent panels with moderate contact. 3. Wood Stud or Furring Substrate: Install with 1-inch annular-ring shank hardboard nails. 4. Plaster or Gypsum-Board Substrate: Install with 1-5/8-inch annular-ring shank hardboard nails. 5. Nailing: Space nails 4 inches o.c. at panel perimeter and 8 inches o.c. at intermediate supports unless otherwise required by manufacturer. 6. Do not use beadboard paneling in areas where matching existing historic beadboard.

3.5 RAILING INSTALLATION

A. Install rails with no more than 1/8 inch in 96-inchvariation from a straight line.

B. Wall Rails: Support rails on wall brackets securely fastened to wall .

C. Space rail brackets not more than 4 feet o.c.

3.6 SHELVING INSTALLATION

A. Cut shelf cleats at ends of shelves about 1/2 inch less than width of shelves and sand exposed ends smooth.

B. Install shelf cleats by fastening to framing or backing with finish nails or trim screws, set below face and filled. Space fasteners not more than 16 inches o.c.

C. Cut shelves to neatly fit openings with only enough gap to allow shelves to be removed and reinstalled. Install shelves, fully seated on cleats, brackets, and supports.
