These words stand at the heart of our Shabbat morning liturgy. They describe how each individual Jew may find their personal Shabbat of joy and happiness within the communal experience. Up until now, we have worked hard to provide op- portunities for prayer, study and social interaction each and every Shabbat. Through our conversations with you and through the strategic planning initiative, we have grown in our appreciation of what this should and could mean for Har Zion Temple. We are a proud community that is built on longstanding and deep-rooted traditions. We are also committed to deepening our spiritual practice through innovation and experimentation. As Conservative Jews we have always valued the pairing of tradition with change, and take seriously the need to remain anchored in our sacred heritage even as the expressions of those commitments evolve. This past year, we have introduced instrumentation to our Friday night services, explored the role of meditation in prayer, communal text study, breaks for snacks and socializing, changes of prayer space and seating configuration. Through your en- gagement and response to all of these, the clergy team has had conversations about the next best steps to advance our spiritual exploration and growth. To provide our community with the firm anchor to which we have grown accustomed, our sanctuary service on Shabbat morning will continue in its current form and will be led by Cantor Vogel and one of our Rabbis. Addition- ally, babysitting will continue every week beginning at 9:30 AM and Tot Shabbat every other week at its usual time. Our Junior Congregation services, led by Norman Einhorn, will continue on a bi-weekly basis with the alternating weeks featuring a new family service led by Rabbi Allen. This service will follow the basic outlines of the Shabbat morning liturgy and will contain joyous singing and instrumentation, storytelling, snack time, Parshat Hashavua activities and much more! Page Two  June, 2015  www.harziontemple.org  The Bulletin of Har Zion Temple Joint Clergy Message (continued from page 1) Noise is encouraged and families of all ages are welcome. Twice a month Rabbi Allen will be conducting a learning service whose aim is to uncover the meaning in our siddur towards deeper appreciation and understanding of our tefilah. This service will be part text study, part communal singing, part experimentation laboratory. No previous prayer knowledge or experience required. This service will conclude by 10:30 AM. At 10:45 AM, Parshah study will be offered by a rotating group of our clergy. Refreshments will be served. Additionally, opposite the weeks of Junior Congregation, our teens will take ownership of their Shabbat morning service. Rabbi Marshall and Norman Einhorn will serve as their guides as they craft a peer-led Shabbat morning experience. Every week, all of these Shabbat morning offerings will converge so that the community can enjoy one Kiddush together. On Friday night we are also offering a new model. We will begin the second Shabbat of each month with an instrumental Kabbalat Shabbat and Maariv Service. Recognizing that the inclusion of instruments at a Shabbat service is not comfort- able for all, we are committed to supporting more traditional prayer options on those weeks should there be sufficient interest. Planning is in process to create new young family opportunities on Friday night, as well. One of the important messages that we took away from our strategic planning process is that our members want oppor- tunities to joyously come together as a community to engage in the richness of Judaism and all it has to offer. We see this new model (Sample month is below) as a path that will keep us growing and celebrating together with deeper meaning and greater joy. As we begin down this new road, we know you will join us so that each of us can feel the goodness and contentment of Shabbat together.

Reflections Message from Jane Fishman Grinberg Rabbi Nogah Marshall, Educational Director Religious School/PTA Sometimes the lessons one learns in Junior Congregation life stem not from the classroom or from Saturday, June 6 – Heh Transition Ceremony our teachers, rather the best lessons in Chai Five and Seventh Grade life are learned through experience. Recognition Over the course of the past nine years Har Zion Temple has been part of my School everyday life. I know that the major- Sunday, June 7 – Last Day of Elementary and ity of these moments were and are the Middle School shehechyinau moments. Moments that Youth allow us to hear God’s voice and instruction, experience Sunday, June 7 – Kadima and USY Trip to sacredness, holiness, and specialness. Moments such as Hershey Park morning minyan, B’nai Mitzvah celebrations, the Purim Shpiel, Scholar in Residence programming, model Sedarim, and baby namings. God tells us, “You shall be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy.” For the past nine years as the Educational JFGRS Director, I have tried to instill in the lives of my students of all ages a sense of holiness, a sense of kedushah through 2015 Jewish text, uplifting and informative life experiences, and a nurturing community rooted in Jewish values and Mitzvot. And throughout life, we experience triumphs and victories, and sometimes failures and disappointments. But for some of us, the Promised Land remains just that, a promise. But sometimes just the journey itself is worthwhile and affirm- ing. And I truly believe we have taken one step closer to reaching the Promised Land. As we get ready to go on summer vacations, what I hope we carry with us as a plan for the coming year is my optimism in our future. I am excited to continue thinking outside the box in creating a culture and environment in which we will not be afraid to dream new dreams; to realize those dreams and dream even more dreams that brings a sense of kedushah into each and every one of our lives. And as I reflect upon this year, together I would like to take this opportunity to offer up some words of thanks to three special hard working women who are completing their terms: Michele Perlstein, Youth Committee Chair, Dorene Karasick, the Vice President of Education and Youth and Michele Levin, the Vice President of Religious Affairs and Adult Education. Thank you for your vision, dedication and commitment to Har Zion Temple and the Jewish community. It has been a pleasure working and learning with you. As Rabbi Tarfun, in Pirkei Avot teaches, Lo Eleicha Ham- lacha Ligmor, V’lo Atah Ben Horin Levatel Mimena. “You are not obliged to finish the task but neither are you free to neglect it.” No, we as Jewish people have not yet reached the Promised Land. We have not finished our task as a Jewish people or here at Har Zion Temple, but I am confident that we have the skills to continue enriching the lives of Har Zion Temple with kedushah. Have a wonderful summer and I look forward to another year filled with kedushah.
