ARTS & CULTURE Jez Bond and Melli Marie spent six years looking for a space for a thriving theatre for the community. They found it in a vacant office block next to Finsbury Park station. Designed by David Hughes Architects at a cost of £2.6 million, The Park on Clifton Terrace has staged plays like Oliver Cotton’s Daytona, starring Maureen Lipman. In the former Hornsey Road Baths is the Platform Arts Centre hosting a theatre and a dance studio. Also check out the small galleries like Further afield, in the old McKenzie Pavilion in Finsbury Park which explores the relationship between art and technology. AUTHENTICITY LOCAL FAVOURITES Start the day at Lara’s on Blackstock Road, an Italian café with a lovely little courtyard. On Stroud Green Road, alongside the concept coffee shop Common Ground, is Season Kitchen. Specialising in dishes like Nettle Soup and Smoked Salmon with Crispy Seaweed it is in the words of Time Out “a place to be celebrated”. Another Stroud Green favourite is Dolsot. With Hangui calligraphy adorning the walls, this intimate Japanese and Korean serves the freshest cuts of Sashimi. Then there’s My Cottage Café, a friendly Lebanese where healthy mezes match the homely surrounds. At the equally welcoming Vegan Yes, an Italian and Korean couple create inventive fusion dishes like Kimchi Lasagna. Also take time to explore the attractive old Victorian back streets, home to local pubs like The Brownswood just down from the HQ of DJ Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM radio station.
9 AUTHENTICITY PARKSIDE On the streets around the 100-acre Finsbury Park, you will find eateries like the Greek grill house Pure Cyprus, traditional Ethiopian café Hamer, and the cosy Osteria Tufo, one of Grace Dent of the Evening Standard’s favourite Italian restaurants.
Filled with bric-a-brac and vintage posters, The Faltering Fullback is one of many characterful pubs nearby. Try the World’s End, with its table football and live music nights, or The Old Dairy in a Grade II Listed building with murals that hark back to its time as a creamery.
10 Shopping
BENEATH THE ARCHES In the converted Victorian warehouse that is now Coal Drops Yard, King’s Cross, you will find distinguished clothes shops like A.P.C. and Paul Smith next to Tom Dixon’s futuristic furniture store. The arches here are also home to eateries like Vermuteria, the creation of designer, Michael Sodeau, and chef, Anthony Demetre. You will need to book well in advance for The Coal Office. A collaboration between Chef Assaf Granit and Tom Dixon Studio, this inventive Middle Eastern received Fay Maschler’s only 5-star review. Or head to the canal side heart of King’s Cross, Granary Square, home of Central Saint Martins art school and Caravan the masters of the perfect brunch. VIVACITY

THE FOOD CRITICS’ CHOICE A favourite of the Evening Standard’s Fay Maschler, Islington’s OLDROYD is the brainchild of former Chef Director at Polpo, Tom Oldroyd. The contemporary European menu stands out for dishes like Pig’s Head Croquetas and Crab Tagliarini. Doubling as a fishmonger and restaurant, Prawn on the Lawn takes inspiration from its original location in Cornwall. Small plates of Ox Heart and Oysters are what Highbury’s Brooklyn style Westerns Laundry has built its reputation on. Also visit Crouch End for Bistro Aix, serving classic French dishes beneath Renaissance style murals.
INVENTIVE VENDORS Paul and Nicky Campbell began serving pies to Arsenal fans from their front garden in 2011. Piebury Corner now has three outlets including a match day stall by the old Highbury Stadium.
Broadway Market is the perfect place to try out London’s famous street food. There are over 20 traders along this stretch, ranging from the Vietnamese baguettes of Banh Mi 11 to Butchie’s New York style fried chicken and the renowned Ghanaian stew experts Spinach & Agushi.
