The Loudon-clear guide to… Rally Sweden Hello. So, snow. Except this time the story’s about the snow’s Swedish no- snow. It’s a huge shame that the recent warm weather has conspired to take the edge off what has to be one of the biggest sporting spectacles of the season: World Rally Cars dancing on ice. The World Rally Championship is full of stop-you-in-your-tracks moments and the sight of a World Rally Car on the lock-stops – front corner nibbling a snowbank at the apex while the opposite corner leans on a wall and fires powder 15 feet in the air – is right up there. Right up there. But it’s not to be this time. The warm weather has forced a complete rethink of the route and even blizzard conditions for the rest of the week wouldn’t be enough to deliver the perfect winter rally. Recipe for perfect winter roads: heavy (like heavy, heavy) snow, semi-melt, deep-freeze, light snow shower. The semi-melt puts moisture into the road and snow base which, when frozen hard, provides a rock-solid ice base for the studded tyres to dig into. The freeze will also pack the snowbanks really hard, allowing the guys to go a gear higher through some corners. We’re missing a couple of elements of that recipe this week! This week will be about staying out of trouble and keeping as many studs in place as possible. That in itself provides an intriguing event, however. Let’s see who can drive smart as well as super-quick in these compromised and challenging conditions.

  • The Loudon-Clear Guide To… Rally Poland Two Rallies Stand
The Loudon-clear guide to… Rally Poland Two rallies stand head and shoulders ahead of the rest of the World Rally Championship when it comes to speed. The first one? That’s easy, everybody knows about Finland and its 1,000 lakes. The second? Sweden, maybe? No. Australia, that was fairly quick last year. Wrong again. Poland. This week’s race around the Masurian lakes, 250 kilometres (160 miles) north of Warsaw is not for the faint hearted. It’s super-quick: Finland without the jumps. Last year, the average speed in Poland was 121.41kph (75.44mph) – just four kph (2.5mph) ‘slower’ than the stages around Jyväskylä. Speed and spectators are what this Polish spectacle is all about as fans from across central Europe turn out to watch the fastest go faster. These are the rallies where the crews really earn their stripes. With speeds so high, everything has to be 100 per cent perfect – particularly the relationship between driver and co-driver. Poland’s a place which really sorts the men from the boys. Inside the car, it’s eye-wateringly quick in places, and on the outside it’s an absolute demonstration of what modern rallying at its pinnacle is all about: pace, precision and shocking performance. The rally has been around for a very long time – some reporting it to be the second oldest in the world (after Rallye Monte-Carlo) – with local star Tadeusz Heyne guiding a Dodge to an inaugural Rajd Polski victory in 1921. A regular in the FIA European Rally Championship, this is only the fifth time it has been included in the World Rally Championship.

  • Che Guevara Energy Drink Tour De Corse This Event Conjures
The Loudon-clear guide to… Che Guevara Energy Drink Tour de Corse This event conjures so many evocative and emotional memories: a Bernard Darniche-driven Lancia Stratos, incredible French dominance, Petter Solberg’s unforgettable zero to hero fightback win in 2003 and, of course, Sébastien Loeb’s perfect rally to win every single stage two years later. The Tour de Corse is a special rally with a special place in the history of the World Rally Championship. And the good news is that this week’s event goes a long way to really recreating what the original events were all about; this week is a real tour of Corsica including mileage from top to bottom of this beautiful island. Granted, a round-island itinerary sets France’s round of the championship aside from its fellow WRC qualifiers, but it’s great to have a bit of variety, not to mention a huge challenge to the crews competing. And, for the first time, I’m delighted to say that includes me. I’m co-driving Mohamed Al Mutawaa in an Abu Dhabi Racing Citroën DS 3 R3T. We tested together for the first time in France last week and everything went well – it’s fair to say we’re both very excited about getting into those 10,000 corners. One thing everybody’s hoping for this week is good weather; you really had to feel for the organisers last year, with so much rain falling in the run-up to the rally. This time we’ve enjoyed sunshine during the recce, but as the rally approaches there are some clouds gathering over the mountains… The rally ahead… FIA World Rally Championship round 10/14 WRC – WRC2

  • Rally Isle of Man When Elfyn Evans and Craig Parry Clinched the British
The Loudon-clear guide to… Rally Isle of Man When Elfyn Evans and Craig Parry clinched the British Rally Championship title last time out on the Ulster, there must have been a few folk worried about the potential entertainment value of the final round. Those people have clearly never visited the Isle of Man in September. What’s more, those same folk certainly hadn’t counted on entries from Rally Finland podium finishers Craig Breen/Scott Martin and Manx legend and local hero Mark Higgins, who will be co-driven by Darren Garrod. What might have been looking like a parade lap for the DMACK British Rally Championship pair is anything-but. This week’s series finale has become one of the most eagerly anticipated and exciting rounds of what’s been a sensational comeback year for the BRC. Breen will drive the same DGM-run DS 3 R5 he used to win the Circuit of Ireland in April, while Higgins lines up alongside Evans in a second DMACK Ford Fiesta R5. But don’t be fooled into thinking it’s going to be just those three at the sharp end. There’s a season-long silver medal on offer here and a very long list of determined and capable crews chasing that runners-up spot. Elsewhere in the series, Rob Duggan and Gerard Conway have already sealed the DMACK Junior BRC title in their Vauxhall Adam R2, but the National Rally Cup’s still up for grabs with Mitsubishi Mirage driver Robert Blomberg needing a top-four finish to clinch that award.

  • The Loudon-Clear Guide To… Circuit of Ireland When I Did
The Loudon-clear guide to… Circuit of Ireland When I did the Circuit of Ireland with Robert Barrable a couple of years ago, there was a real feeling the event was growing; the legend had definitely been reborn. And now? Well, there’s no doubting the fact that its back. Granted, it’s not the full, five-day, north-south tour of the Seventies and Eighties, but the organising team – led by Bobby Willis – has worked wonders with this event and the profile is arguably higher than it’s ever been. And that profile is reflected in the event’s standing as a shining light in three major series - the British, Irish and European Rally Championship - for the first time since 1991. The cream of European rallying will gather in Belfast with an astonishing field of almost 40 top-line R5 cars. And before them lies some of the best asphalt rallying in the world. Stages like Hamiltons Folly and Torr Head are part of the fabric of our sport – they’re fantastic to watch and even better to drive. Growing up with a family involved in rallying, there were some fantastic stories about Jimmy McRae on the Circuit of Ireland. It’s still an absolute treat to listen to a tale or two about his seven wins – even if I was just about getting ready for my first birthday when he and Rob Arthur took victory number seven in 1989! It was those kind of stories, and the knowledge that this rally has been running since 1931, that made it so special when I finished third with Rob in 2014 (in a Ford Fiesta R5).
