“Impossible things are happening every day!” ~ Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella Saving Delaney & Other Wonderful Possibili es! As we look back on 2018, we have many success stories, but none quite like Delaney’s. He was a shy mixed breed rescued from hoarding in August of 2017. In the early fall he was adopted, but ran away from his new owner the same day. Weeks later he surfaced several miles away in the neighbor- hoods of Hillsborough, Pebble Beach, and The Villages of Wellington. His plight inspired the neighbors to save this elusive creature as winter was approaching. Paofeng Tsai, the Fleming Family, Dale Woodall, and a host of other area residents along with HSPC stepped up. Food and temporary shelters were put out and plan a er plan was made and executed for Delaney’s rescue. No ma er what, Delaney always seemed to be running away… un l spring. He began to take an interest in Carla Smith’s home. Carla was pa ent and allowed Delaney to come and go as he pleased on his terms un l he finally decided he no longer wanted to go. He was home with his special person at last! Maybe he was never running away, but running to the place he belonged. Maybe there was something more to this survivor who traveled miles through heavy traffic enduring the elements of winter and parasites of an Arkansas spring. Maybe Delaney’s purpose was to unite neighbors on a mission of compassion. It’s Possible! On behalf of the Board of Directors, we wish you all the possible wonders of the season! A pet crisis can bond neighbors and build camaraderie to help with future issues facing a neighborhood. In general pets help us form friendships by making beloved dogs and cats centerpieces of conversa- on. Studies show that pet ownership is a factor in developing connected, healthy neighborhoods. Bonuses to these connec ons include: x Walking your dog at various mes of the day allows you to connect with a variety of neighbors forming and maintaining friendships. x Knowing the pet owners in your neighborhood opens the door to poten al pet si ers nearby. x Dog friendly neighborhoods create the need for establishing a neighborhood dog park for further interac- on between your pets and your neighbors. x Pets help protect the neighborhood by serving as deterrents to criminal ac vity. Likewise, dog walkers are also likely to keep a watchful eye out for suspicious behavior during their rou ne walks. There are various ways to join or form neighborhood groups. Nextdoor.com is a private social network that connects over 185,000 neighborhoods. You can check their site to see if there is already an associa on in your neighborhood. Neighborhoodlink.com has excellent informa on on how to form groups. MAILED HOLIDAY CARDS Make a dona on in honor of a person or pet, and we’ll mail out a lovely holiday card acknowledging your kind gi . You can donate from our website or Facebook page, mail in a check, or call or drop by the shelter. Just provide the name of the honoree and the address to which we should mail the holiday card. We are fortunate to have formed many alliances with other rescues and shelters over the years. Here are some of those:
Paws in Prison is a special program that places shelter dogs within the prisons for approximately 8 weeks of 24/7 obedience training and socializa on by ADC inmate handlers in prepara on for the dogs' adop on through CARE (Central Arkansas Rescue Effort for Animals). We were thrilled when our Blanca, now Ellie, was chosen for the program! However, none of us could predict the des ny of this once starving stray found on a country road. Not only is she a trained assistance dog, but she is also a loving companion to a young lady with special needs. jjjj
Rocky was deaf, visually impaired and passed over at our shelter for several months un l we reached out to a na onal group called Blind Dog Rescue Alliance. Like us, they fell in love with his picture and circulated it throughout their foster groups. It wasn’t long un l a foster in New Jersey spo ed him and decided he would fit in perfectly with her Aussie with the same issues. A er a kindness makeover performed by a groomer at Chenal Pet Palace, Rocky departed on an 18 leg personal vehicle transport from Li le Rock to Sayreville, New Jersey! On his adventure of a life me, he met 18 admirers, posed for selfies, poured on the smooches and became a celebrity on his two day journey. At the end of the trip he met his family! Foster? Doubt that… Rocky fit right in! jjjj Some mes it is our turn. We are proud to be a partner with Best Friends Animal Society in Utah widely known for their na onal rescue efforts. Recently they reached out to us for help. They were transpor ng 50 animals from a crowded shelter in Texas to a receiving shelter in Illinois, and they needed someplace in between to stop and rest for the night.
We were happy to “leave the lights on” and accommodate their precious passengers for a warm overnight stay at our shelter. Fall/Winter 2018 Newsle er warmhearts.org Page 4 jSpotlight on Warm Hearts j HSPC’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the Buzzcut Champs! Since 2012, Bill Paddack and a number of his friends have successfully run what has come to be called the Buzzcut Challenge benefi ng the Humane Society of Pulaski County. Bill has put his hair on the line – well, actually, on the floor! – a couple of mes, in 2012 and again this past summer. Along the way, other shavees have also included Jeff Johnson, Sco Harris, Steve Bullington, BJ Davis and Mark Zoeller. That first year raised $1,000 in much-needed funds for the HSPC and the guys have successfully increased the amount each year. Addi onally, Charlo e and Ron Workman and Mary Alice Easterling have played a huge role in making these annual charity haircuts successful, both in terms of helping contact possible donors as well as providing gen- erous gi s each year themselves in support of the animals. Here are some photos from hair, um, gone bye-bye! Including one of Bill, a er the deed was done in 2012, with his loyal best friend Gracie, who was a HSPC alum. Sco ’s cut was featured in the Arkansas Democrat- Gaze e, and Steve had his hair shorn live on KATV, Channel 7. And for a minute or two, Jeff looked like he was audi oning for the TV show “Vikings” as he endured an ini al Mohawk before the rest of his hair was shorn. Bill says they’re not sure just what – or who – will be the focus in 2019. The enchanted evening began with a champagne toast to our sponsors conducted by our Master of Ceremonies, Renee Shapiro and Auc oneer, Camille Blackshire. The band The Howlers then serenaded our royal court of canine Princesses and a Prince as they walked the red carpet in glitzy formal wear. Guests enjoyed a royal spread provided by Next Level Events, over 260 great auc on items, a wine raffle, live music and great fellowship with animal rescue lovers! Before the night was over, this generous crowd pledged and raised several thousand dollars for The Cinderella Fund to purchase needed medical equipment for HSPC! The money raised for this fund combined with the proceeds from the event dedicated to replenishing the emergency medical fund broke all other previous Reigning records. It really was possible!

All recovered from the neglect and were adopted except Kilgore. The wounds to his soul were deep and he trusted only a few including his foster mom, Dee Sadler. She faithfully cared for him for three years. In her words, “This pup was a tower of strength and uncondi- onal love towards me.
