After back-to-back NCAA titles for South Carolina and numerous defections to the professional ranks in ‘11, the 2012 projected team may be a mini-view of the NCAA World Series next June. The defending champ Gamecocks landed pitcher Matt Price, who led the nation with 20 saves and kept USC in the running throughout the CWS with clutch relief appearances, on the first unit, along with starting ace Michael Roth (14-3, 1.06 earned run average, 112 strikeouts in a workhorse 145 innings pitched. Also off of Ray Tanner’s title crew is 1B Christian Walker, a second team selection, after posting a .358 batting average with 10 home runs and 62 RBIs. Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings March 19, 2016 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 2014 - A Cactus League game between the Reds and Royals is abruptly stopped in the 6th inning when Reds closer Aroldis Chapman is struck in the face by a line drive off the bat of Salvador Perez. Chapman is taken off the field on a stretcher, with fractures above his eye and in his nose, as well as multiple lacerations. The two managers then elect not to continue play, with the blessing of home plate umpire Chris Guccione. MLB.COM Adam Duvall, Tyler Holt bookend Reds' win By Adam McCalvy / MLB.com | @AdamMcCalvy | March 18th, 2016 + 166 COMMENTS PHOENIX -- Adam Duvall had three hits for the Reds, including a long, two-run home run, and Chris Carter hit his third homer for the Brewers as the teams battled back and forth Friday at Maryvale Baseball Park. The Reds ultimately prevailed, 7-6. Carter hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a tying triple in the fifth and Rymer Liriano lifted a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the sixth as part of a middle-inning comeback for the Brewers, who had won four of their previous five games. But the Reds quickly tied the game at 5 in the seventh inning on Jake Cave's two-out single. Duvall, a candidate for Cincinnati's left field vacancy who manned third base in this game, homered to cap the Reds' three-run first inning. Joey Votto also delivered an RBI single in the inning, but all three runs were unearned against Brewers starter Chase Anderson because of an error charged to left fielder Ryan Braun.

The Boston Red Sox Saturday, April 1, 2017 * The Boston Globe Ben Taylor makes Red Sox’ Opening Day roster Nick Cafardo WASHINGTON — Rainy days aren’t so bad after all. While the Red Sox-Nationals exhibition game at Nationals Park was postponed Friday, the sound of the rain was like a symphony to Ben Taylor. The hard-throwing youngster who impressed with his poise and stuff throughout spring training will be the 12th pitcher on the staff when the Red Sox open against the Pirates Monday in Boston. Taylor, 24, made it because Tyler Thornburg, Drew Pomeranz, and David Price are starting the season on the disabled list. The Red Sox could have gone with a more seasoned pitcher such as Noe Ramirez, but the brass huddled during the rain delay and made the call. Taylor made the team as a nonroster invitee, which is rare. “I was very surprised,” said Taylor. “I came into camp not really expecting to make the team, but all the pieces fell into place. Perfect timing. “I’ve been feeling really good this spring. All my pitches have been working really well. I’m throwing the ball well and it paid off.” Manager John Farrell was impressed by the righthander’s 19 strikeouts over 13 innings, but more important, he said, “It was the poise and mound presence he showed as a young pitcher.” Taylor’s time with the major league team could be short-lived, depending on when Thornburg is ready, but who knows? “The hope is always to make the big league club,” Taylor said.

JUNE 24th SYRACUSE (30-42) at PAWTUCKET (36-37) 1:35 pm Syracuse Chiefs RHP John Simms (2-3, 3.48) vs. Pawtucket Red Sox LHP Jalen Beeks (4-4, 2.65) The Last Sunday in June - The Pawtucket Red Sox play their final home game in the month of June (rather amazingly) when they host the Syracuse Chiefs (AAA-Washington) in the rubber game of their 3-game weekend series this afternoon at 1:35 pm at McCoy Stadium (live on myRITV). Five has been the lucky number thus far in the series…the PawSox won the opener on Friday, 5-4 but the Chiefs evened things with a 5-3 victory last night. That loss snapped Pawtucket’s 4-game winning streak – one shy of their season- long 5-game winning streak. A little more than a week and a half ago the PawSox swept a 3-game series in Syracuse from June 11-13 by scores of 3-1, 5-3, and 5-1. Pawtucket’s 4-game winning streak vs. the Chiefs was stopped last night. This Homestand - This 7-game homestand – Sox are 4-2 thus far after taking 3 of 4 from Buffalo last week and going 1-1 vs. Syracuse this weekend) concludes today with this remarkably being the last Sunday in June already. After today, the PawSox will be gone all of this week for a 7-game roadtrip that begins with 4-games in Buffalo tomorrow (Monday) night vs. the 2nd-place Bisons. Just over a week ago the PawSox swept a 3-game series in Syracuse from June 11-13 by scores of 3-1, 5-3, and 5-1. The teams also met in Syracuse from May 10-13 with the Chiefs winning 3 of 4 during that series. Their next two series against each other will both come here at McCoy – this weekend and then for a 4-game set just after the All-Star break from July 12-15. This Homestand - This 7-game homestand (3-1 thus far after the Sox took 3 of 4 from Buffalo this week) will continue with another exciting weekend on tap at McCoy to conclude Pawtucket’s second of two homestands here in June. AUGUST 27th PAWTUCKET (63-68) at BUFFALO (61-68) 7:05 pm Pawtucket Red Sox RHP William Cuevas (9-7, 3.44) vs. Buffalo Bisons RHP Zach Stewart (2-0, 4.26) One Week to Go - The Pawtucket Red Sox begin the final full week of the season (the regular-season ends next Monday afternoon at McCoy Stadium) when they play the finale of this 4-game series in Buffalo - and their 8-game roadtrip - tonight at 7:05 pm at Coca- Cola Field in downtown Buffalo. The PawSox – winners of 11 of their last 18 games – have won the last two games of this wrap- round weekend series against the Bisons (AAA-Toronto) by 8-5 and 8-3 scores over the weekend after dropping the opener on Friday, 13-4. The Sox have split each of their last two series – both 4-game sets vs. Durham from August 16-19 and at Rochester from August 21-23. They have a chance tonight to capture this series outright with a victory over the Bisons. The PawSox are 15-20-6 in their 41 series this season (15 wins, 20 losses, and 6 splits) pending tonight. Three’s Company - This series has proven to be a battle for 3rd-place in the IL North as the clubs came into play on Friday in a virtual tie for the third spot in the division. Buffalo took over sole possession of 3rd with their victory on Friday but the PawSox have bounced back over the Bisons with their two wins over the weekend.
