A new age: life insurance securitisation By Perry J. Shwachman, Anthony J. Ribaudo and R. Bradley Drake, Sidley Austin LLP In the past five years, the United States life insurance industry has begun a new phase in its management of risk. The industry has adopted and developed securitisation techniques to address challenges raised by its regulatory regime and strengthen return on equity. At the same time, securitisation has provided investors the ability to receive exposure to risks uncorrelated with traditional investments. To date the life insurance industry has utilised three basic securitisation transaction types: redundant reserve, embedded value and catastrophic mortality. Redundant reserve securitisations have grown most party investors. It was a common practice for ancient caravans to split up goods and take different routes to the delivery point. In this way, the risk of losing the full cargo to thieves was lessened. During the 12th and 13th centuries, artisans in Europe worked in guilds. They’d pay money into the guilds and if their shop burned down (common because most dwellings were made of wood), the guild would help them rebuild. If they were injured or killed, the guilds would pay for the care of their widows and children. A NEW STORY. Gloria was a 65-year old widow. She worked hard all her life in the tourism industry. She started as a waitress at the age of 15, and for the next fifty years worked many jobs, with very little time off. She worked as a waitress, a maid, and a hostess in a large hotel. Gloria had just retired. With a paid off home, she was looking forward to a mortgage-free retirement. One January morning, the wiring in her walls caught fire. When she returned from running errands, her home was nearly gone. She didn’t know it at the time, but her dog had escaped into a neighbor’s backyard. At 65, Gloria didn’t have the time or the strength to start over. QUESTIONS: What can Gloria do? Do you agree with this statement? l . The Universal Life Insurance Policy James C. H. Anderson Published in EMPHASIS in November 1975. Reprinted with perraission from Tillinghast ~ A Towers Perrin Company. Editor's note: This issue of EMPHASIS breaks with tradition, since it represents not the collective view of the staff of Tillinghast & Company but the outlook of an individual staff member. James C. H. Anderson, president of the firm, presented the paper from which this article is taken before the Seventh Pacific Insurance Conference in Septem- ber 1975. Mr. Anderson's approach is provocative, and his perceptions may be con- troversial to some; but, in the current climate of concern over the future of the life insurance industry's traditional products and distribution systems, they deserve care- ful consideration. Here, then, is one man's blueprint for a "universal" life insurance policy --for what the author calls "a fully flexible alternative to conventional life insurance contracts, designed to meet the needs and demands of the life insurance market in 1975 and beyond." • Using Cash Value Life Insurance for Retirement Savings
One Resource Group 13548 Zubrick Road Roanoke, IN 46783 888-467-6755 [email protected] Using Cash Value Life Insurance for Retirement Savings August 03, 2017 Page 1 of 6, see disclaimer on final page Using Cash Value Life Insurance for Retirement Savings What is using cash value life insurance for retirement savings? One of the more popular uses for cash value life insurance is to save for retirement. Cash value life insurance refers to a wide variety of insurance policies that provide both a death benefit and the potential accumulation of cash value over a period of time. Cash value life insurance can range from a traditional level premium whole life policy to a single premium whole life policy to a universal life policy to a variable life insurance policy or a variable universal life policy . In today's insurance marketplace, there are a wide variety of cash value life insurance policies that a consumer can buy. These types of insurance policies are in contrast to a term life insurance policy in which the insured makes a series of premium payments and the beneficiaries collect the death benefit if the insured dies while the policy is still in effect. There is no buildup of cash value with a term life policy. Many people use a cash value life insurance policy to save for their retirement and to provide a death benefit to their beneficiaries. In very rare instances, companies may offer their employees an option under their retirement plan to purchase life insurance. Under a qualified retirement plan, amounts contributed to the plan by the employer will be tax deductible.
