Review Men’s 62kg Kim (PRK) sets championship record, Chen breaks world records · Kim Un Guk (PRK) extended his record gold medal haul in the men's 62kg to eight and his total medal amount in this weight division to 15 as he won gold in the Snatch and silver in the Clean & Jerk and Total. · That last achievement saw him beat the record total by Hossein Rezazadeh (IRI, 14) who was the only lifter with more medals at world championships since the current categories were implemented in 1998. · Kim has now won the last five world titles in Snatch and became the second lifter after Li Hongli (CHN) to claim five consecutive gold medals in Snatch in a specific weight category. Li took five Snatch golds in a row between 2002 and 2007 in men's 77kg. · Kim became the first lifter to win at least one medal in this event in five different world championships. · Chen Lijun (CHN) won the Total world title in 2013 and the Clean & Jerk and Total this year. He won those last events in world record breaking fashion improving the mark of 182 by Le Maosheng (CHN) at the 2002 Asian Games to 183 and improving the total of 332 by Kim Un Guk at the 2014 Asian Games to 333. · Chen became the third lifter after Kim and Qiu Le (CHN) to claim multiple gold medals in Total in this category. LC Paper No. CB(2) 1263/03-04(01) PROPOSED RESEARCH OUTLINE The Economic and Social Impacts of Hosting Selected International Games 1. Background 1.1 The Panel on Home Affairs (Panel), at its meeting on 12 December 2003, requested the Research and Library Services Division (RLSD) to conduct a research study on the possible impacts for Hong Kong to host the 2009 East Asian (EA) Games based on the experience of the previous EA Games. 2. Proposed international games to be studied 2.1 RLSD originally intended to study the EA Games held in 1997 and 20011. For comparison, the Asian Games held in 1998 and 2002 were also considered for the study2. Apart from thorough in-house and Internet research, enquiries have been made to the relevant organizing committees and government departments in the host countries for providing the required information. However, only scanty information from official sources has so far been successfully collected on the impacts of hosting the EA Games and the Asian Games. As such, the research will study the 2002 Asian Games and make use of information available from newspapers, magazines and other secondary sources where appropriate. In addition, the 2000 Olympic Games3 and the 2002 Commonwealth Games4 will be included in the study for a better understanding of the impacts of hosting international sports events. 2.2 The study of the 2000 Olympic Games should help reflect the extent of the economic and social impacts that hosting an international sports event could have on a host country, although the scale of a mega sports event such as the Olympic Games is larger than that of the EA Games.

Sport is an integral part of the culture of almost every nation. However, its use to promote gender equity and empower girls and women is often overlooked because sport is not universally perceived as a suitable or desirable pursuit for girls and women. Today the empowerment of women in games and sports has become one of the most important concerns of 21st century. But practically women empowerment in games and sports is still an illusion of reality. It is observe in our day to day life how women become victimized by various social evils. Women empowerment is the vital instrument to expand women’s ability to have resources and to make strategic life choices. Empowerment of women in games and sports is essentially the process of upliftment of economic, social and political status of women, the traditionally underprivileged ones, in the society. Today sports and physical activity as a strategy for the empowerment of girls and women has been gaining recognition worldwide. Women could be empowered through education, sports and physical activities and by giving them equal opportunities in different walks of life. Research on sport, gender, and development indicates that sport can benefit girls and women by: Enhancing health and well-being, fostering self-esteem and empowerment, facilitating social inclusion and integration, challenging gender norms and providing opportunities for leadership and achievement.
