Father Wolf is getting ready to go hunting. Mother Wolf is putting her cubs to bed in the wolf cave. Cubs are baby wolves. Suddenly they hear a noise. “Grrr!” It’s Shere Khan, the tiger. He’s outside the wolf cave and he’s angry. Fortunately, Shere Khan can’t get into the wolf cave because his head is too big. Suddenly a little baby boy, just 18 months old, walks into the wolf cave. He is not afraid. He laughs. At first, Mother Wolf thinks the baby boy is a frog because he doesn’t have any hair on his body. “He’s all bald!”, she says. Father Wolf is very surprised. “It can’t be!”, he says. “Yes, it is. It’s a man cub!” He picks the baby up very carefully in his mouth and shows him to Mother Wolf. Shere Khan is furious. He wants to eat the man cub! Mother and Father Wolf protect the man cub and they decide to call him Mowgli because it means frog. The Wolves follow the “jungle law”. Almost all the animals in the jungle obey this law. The law is complicated and the wolf cubs have to learn it. Their teacher is a bear, called Baloo. When Mowgli is old enough, Mother and Father Wolf bring Mowgli to meet the Wolf Council and the wolf leader, Akela. The wolf council can decide if they want to accept a new cub into their pack or not. It is very important because if the wolf council accept Mowgli, he will be safe. If they do not accept Mowgli, then Shere Khan the tiger can eat him. Shere Khan tries to persuade the wolf council not to accept Mowgli but Baloo promises to teach him the jungle law. Bagheera, a black panther, appears. He says that he will give the wolves a delicious bull to eat if they accept Mowgli. Finally the wolves accept him into their pack. Mowgli grows up in the jungle. He learns how to run fast, how to identify the sounds and smells of all the creatures in the jungle. Mowgli learns the “master word” so he can speak to all the different animals. He is very happy. He loves Baloo and Bagheera and his wolf family. He builds a little house with sticks. Most of the animals love Mowgli but some of them are afraid of him because he is different and wise. Mowgli stares at the animals, he looks into their eyes for a long time. The animals don’t like this. They think he wants to eat them. One day, Mowgli meets the monkeys. He likes playing with them but Baloo is very angry. Baloo says the monkey people are bad because they do not follow the jungle law. Baloo doesn’t like saying the word “monkeys”, so he calls them the “you know who’s”. 5 After many moons and rains Akela comes to visit Mother and Father Wolf. Akela is now very old and weak. He is worried that soon he will “miss the kill”, and then he will not be the leader of the wolf pack any more. (When the wolves are hunting together the leader of the pack hides and waits. The pack run after a deer until it is very tired. Then they chase it towards their pack leader. At the last minute, the leader jumps out and kills it. If the leader misses, and the deer escapes, it means that the pack can choose a new leader. ) The problem is that Shere Khan is always telling the wolf pack bad things about Mowgli. If there is a new wolf pack leader they might not protect Mowgli. Mother and Father Wolf are worried. They want Mowgli to be careful. Mowgli often has a nap in the afternoon. One afternoon, the monkeys kidnap him while he is sleeping. They carry him through the trees to a ruined city called “The Cold Lairs”. On the way Mowgli hears Chil the kite and asks for help. (A kite is a big bird with very good eyesight, a bit like an eagle.) The monkeys lock Mowgli into their secret chamber at the Cold Lairs. Chil tells Baloo and Bagheera. Baloo and Bagheera ask Kaa the snake to come and help rescue Mowgli. At first Kaa says no. Baloo and Bagheera tell Kaa that the monkeys were very rude about him. They say the monkeys call Kaa a worm and a slug. Kaa is very offended. He agrees to help. He comes to the Cold Lairs, hypnotises all the monkeys and then escapes with Mowgli. Eventually Akela misses the kill. Bagheera knows that Mowgli is in danger now. He tells Mowgli to go to the man village and get the “red flower”, (red flower means fire). The jungle animals are all very scared of fire. Bagheera knows that Mowgli can use fire to protect himself. Mowgli runs through the jungle to the man village. When he arrives he sees that the villagers look like him. He asks them for something to eat but they can’t understand him because Mowgli speaks the language of the animals and not the language of men. Mowgli steals the fire and runs back into the jungle. When Mowgli arrives at the council rock he finds Baloo and Akela. They are very scared of the fire. Then Shere Khan arrives. Shere Khan wants the wolf pack to choose him as their new leader. He says that Mowgli must return to live with men. Mowgli uses the fire to fight Shere Khan. Shere Khan is terrified and runs away. It is time for Mowgli to leave and return to live with the man villagers. Mowgli is very sad and he starts to cry for the first time in his life. He is confused. He doesn’t understand what is happening to him. He thinks he is dying! The animals promise they will never forget him and Mowgli returns to live with men. 6 Pair Work. True or False? Say why.
