The Story

It is seven o’clock on a warm evening in the Seonee Hills in India. Father Wolf is getting ready to go hunting. Mother Wolf is putting her cubs to bed in the wolf cave. Cubs are baby wolves. Suddenly they hear a noise. “Grrr!” It’s Shere Khan, the tiger. He’s outside the wolf cave and he’s angry. Fortunately, Shere Khan can’t get into the wolf cave because his head is too big.

Suddenly a little baby boy, just 18 months old, walks into the wolf cave. He is not afraid. He laughs. At first, Mother Wolf thinks the baby boy is a frog because he doesn’t have any hair on his body. “He’s all bald!”, she says. Father Wolf is very surprised. “It can’t be!”, he says. “Yes, it is. It’s a man cub!” He picks the baby up very carefully in his mouth and shows him to Mother Wolf.

Shere Khan is furious. He wants to eat the man cub! Mother and Father Wolf protect the man cub and they decide to call him because it means frog.

The Wolves follow the “jungle law”. Almost all the animals in the jungle obey this law. The law is complicated and the wolf cubs have to learn it. Their teacher is a bear, called Baloo.

When Mowgli is old enough, Mother and Father Wolf bring Mowgli to meet the Wolf Council and the wolf leader, Akela. The wolf council can decide if they want to accept a new cub into their pack or not. It is very important because if the wolf council accept Mowgli, he will be safe. If they do not accept Mowgli, then Shere Khan the tiger can eat him.

Shere Khan tries to persuade the wolf council not to accept Mowgli but Baloo promises to teach him the jungle law. Bagheera, a black panther, appears. He says that he will give the wolves a delicious bull to eat if they accept Mowgli. Finally the wolves accept him into their pack.

Mowgli grows up in the jungle. He learns how to run fast, how to identify the sounds and smells of all the creatures in the jungle. Mowgli learns the “master word” so he can speak to all the different animals. He is very happy. He loves Baloo and Bagheera and his wolf family. He builds a little house with sticks.

Most of the animals love Mowgli but some of them are afraid of him because he is different and wise. Mowgli stares at the animals, he looks into their eyes for a long time. The animals don’t like this. They think he wants to eat them.

One day, Mowgli meets the monkeys. He likes playing with them but Baloo is very angry. Baloo says the monkey people are bad because they do not follow the jungle law. Baloo doesn’t like saying the word “monkeys”, so he calls them the “you know who’s”. 5

After many moons and rains Akela comes to visit Mother and Father Wolf. Akela is now very old and weak. He is worried that soon he will “miss the kill”, and then he will not be the leader of the wolf pack any more. (When the wolves are hunting together the leader of the pack hides and waits. The pack run after a deer until it is very tired. Then they chase it towards their pack leader. At the last minute, the leader jumps out and kills it. If the leader misses, and the deer escapes, it means that the pack can choose a new leader. ) The problem is that Shere Khan is always telling the wolf pack bad things about Mowgli. If there is a new wolf pack leader they might not protect Mowgli. Mother and Father Wolf are worried. They want Mowgli to be careful.

Mowgli often has a nap in the afternoon. One afternoon, the monkeys kidnap him while he is sleeping. They carry him through the trees to a ruined city called “The Cold Lairs”. On the way Mowgli hears Chil the kite and asks for help. (A kite is a big bird with very good eyesight, a bit like an eagle.)

The monkeys lock Mowgli into their secret chamber at the Cold Lairs. Chil tells Baloo and Bagheera. Baloo and Bagheera ask Kaa the snake to come and help rescue Mowgli. At first Kaa says no. Baloo and Bagheera tell Kaa that the monkeys were very rude about him. They say the monkeys call Kaa a worm and a slug. Kaa is very offended. He agrees to help. He comes to the Cold Lairs, hypnotises all the monkeys and then escapes with Mowgli.

Eventually Akela misses the kill. Bagheera knows that Mowgli is in danger now. He tells Mowgli to go to the man village and get the “red flower”, (red flower means fire). The jungle animals are all very scared of fire. Bagheera knows that Mowgli can use fire to protect himself.

Mowgli runs through the jungle to the man village. When he arrives he sees that the villagers look like him. He asks them for something to eat but they can’t understand him because Mowgli speaks the language of the animals and not the language of men. Mowgli steals the fire and runs back into the jungle.

When Mowgli arrives at the council rock he finds Baloo and Akela. They are very scared of the fire. Then Shere Khan arrives. Shere Khan wants the wolf pack to choose him as their new leader. He says that Mowgli must return to live with men. Mowgli uses the fire to fight Shere Khan. Shere Khan is terrified and runs away.

It is time for Mowgli to leave and return to live with the man villagers. Mowgli is very sad and he starts to cry for the first time in his life. He is confused. He doesn’t understand what is happening to him. He thinks he is dying! The animals promise they will never forget him and Mowgli returns to live with men.

The Wolf Council at Council Rock

(Enter Baloo)

Yeah.. yeah… I know I’m a bear. But just bear with me.. get it? BEAR with me? I am an EXPERT on Jungle Law. Now let’s give a very warm wolf welcome to Akela - the leader of the pack. Everyone, Awoo.

Audience: Awoo!

Baloo: Yeah! Pretty good. Warmish! One more time. Everyone Awoooo!

Audience: Awoo! 16

Baloo: Yeah! Beary Good.

Akela: Thank you. Thank you. Free People. Wolves. We are here tonight to decide whether or not to accept this new, ahem, “cub” into our pack.

Baby Mowgli: (laughing) Ahee ahee ahee

Akela: Men are very wise. What a good idea to have one in our pack. Look well, O Wolves, look well!

Shere Khan (off) Grrr. That cub is mine. Give him to me.

Akela: Shere Khan? (looking around) Where ARE you? Can anyone see Shere Khan? Oh. There you are. WHAT are you doing here?

Shere Khan: That is not a wolf. Grrrr Why is it here? It is not the same as us. Look at it. It’s all bald. Everybody agrees. Don’t you? You – you look very intelligent. Read this

Audience Member 1: The tiger is right.

Shere Khan: Oh very good. Well done. (to Akela) See? (to audience member 2) And you, I can tell you’re a genius – What do you think? (gives card) Read this.

Audience Member 2: I agree with the tiger.

Shere Khan: Oh very good. You see? They all agree with me. (to audience member 3) What about you? You look super brainy. What do you think we should do with the man cub? (gives card) Read this.

Audience Member 3: Let’s eat him.

Akela: Silence. I have heard you. There are voices amongst us who do not wish to accept the man-cub into our pack. In cases like this we must follow the Jungle Law. And the Law says two people, NOT his parents, must now support this cub. Who speaks for this cub? Which two people speak for him?

Baby Mowgli: (laughing) Ahee ahee aheee

Baloo: Err. Me. I will. I, Baloo, will speak for the man cub. Look at him! He’s harmless. Let him run with the Pack. Why not? I’ll teach him. Yeah! I speak for him. Accept him into your pack!

Baby Mowgli: Ahee ahee aheee

Shere Khan: Foolish bear! Grrr.

Baloo: Don’t you BARE your teeth at me.

Shere Khan: Grr

Akela: So that is one.

Trunk: Then there is a terribly long silence. A looong pause. 17

Baloo: Paws. Ha Ha Ha!

Shere Khan: Ha! I knew they wouldn’t accept him. Give him to me!

Baloo: Get away from him, Shere Khan.

Shere Khan: Grr

Baloo: Get back! Come on everyone. Accept the man cub. Mowgli! Mowgli! (with audience) Mowgli! Mowgli!

Shere Khan: Fools! Idiots! Dogs! Don’t listen to Baloo.

Trunk: Then suddenly Bagheera, the black panther appeared.

(Enter Bagheera)

Bagheera: Wolf Pack. Jungle law says that the life of a new cub may be bought - at a price – and it doesn’t matter who pays that price. So here’s the deal – I’ll give you a freshly killed bull in exchange for the man cub’ s life.

Baloo: Yay! Free food! Beary nice.

Bagheera: (to the audience) Free People, do YOU accept this man-cub, to be a member of your pack?

Baloo: (to audience) Come on everyone. Do we accept him?

Audience : Yes!

Baloo: Do we?

Audience: Yes!

Baloo: Everyone. Awooo!

Shere Khan: Grrrr You pack of howling fools!

(Exit Shere Khan)

Trunk: And that’s how Mowgli was entered into the Seonee Wolf Pack.

When I’m not learning I sit out in the sun and sleep, and eat and go to sleep again. When I feel dirty or hot I swim in the forest pools.

Creeper/Vine/Baloo: Now this is the / – as old/ and as true/ as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it shall prosper,/ but that Wolf that shall break it must die./As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk /the Law runneth forward /and back/ –For the strength of the of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack

(Longtail drinks)

Mowgli: Hmm… now I just need to tie these together and..

(Enter Coconut, pulls Longtail’s tail)

Mowgli: Hey! That’s my drinking shell. Give it back!

Mowgli: Hey! Leave them alone!

Coconut : Hey! Leave them alone!

Mowgli: (laughs)

Coconut: Nuts!

(Enter Baloo)

Baloo: Er.. What’s going on?

(Exit Longtail and Coconut)

Mowgli: Oh hi Baloo! Do you want to play with me and.. hey? Where did they go?

Baloo: PLAY? With the Monkey People? Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

Mowgli: But Baloo..

Baloo: No, no, no, no!

Mowgli: But they PLAYED with me Baloo. They like playing chase. Just like me. And they drank from my shell. They’re more like me than any of the other Jungle folk.

Baloo: Shhhh!.. (angry ) What do I teach you man-cub?

Mowgli: The Jungle Law.

Baloo: Have you EVER heard me speak of the Monkey People?

Mowgli: No.

Baloo: Exactly. And that is because the “You Know Who’s” do not follow the Jungle Law.

Mowgli: (quietly) I see. 25

Baloo: They are evil. And dirty. They boast about all the things they’re going to do to help everyone in the Jungle because they want to get noticed. But the next minute they see a nut falling off a tree and start laughing. And then they forget all about their promises. So we do NOT notice them. Even when they throw things.

Mowgli: Sorry, Baloo.

Baloo: The Monkey People are forbidden.

Mowgli: Ok.

Baloo: We do not notice them. Now get in there and think about it.

(Exit Baloo)

Mowgli: Yes Baloo. No Baloo. But they’re fun! Bad Baloo! (sits in stick house)

Shere Khan: What is this? Where did it come from? (sniffs) It’s the man-cub. Pah! I knew it.

Bagheera: We be of one blood thou and I.

Mowgli: What does that mean?

Bagheera: It means that we’re all different. But we’re kind of the same too inside.

Father Wolf: Why are you telling us this?

Akela: Because next time. I might miss the kill.

Father Wolf: So?

Akela: If I miss. If I miss… that’s the end. I’m not head of the wolf pack any more. It’s the Jungle Law.

Mother Wolf: (to Mowgli) Mowgli, go out and play. But .. what about Mowgli? Will the pack still protect him?
