The purpose of this research, in large part, is to show that punk has in fact been a persistent and consistent tradition in the decades since. -

Trinity Church in the City of Boston The Rev. Morgan S. Allen September 13, 2020 XV Pentecost, Matthew 18:21-35 Come Holy Spirit, and enkindle in the hearts of your faithful, the fire of your Love. Amen. Good morning, Trinity Church! And, oh, people of God: may we hear the Gospel this morning, and may we abide it always: God calls us to devote ourselves to affection, rather than indignation … God calls us to devote ourselves to affection, rather than indignation. For many years now, my family has spent special summer evenings watching Hollywood franchises in sequence, often in the same sitting: beginning when the kids were little with the foundational Star Wars films and continuing through solidly-PG standards Back to the Future and the Christopher-Reeve Superman movies. We incrementally graduated in maturity, eventually advancing through the Star Trek films and their recent reboots, the Christopher Nolan-directed Batman series and the James Bond catalogue, until, this July, we made our way through all 24 – twenty-four! – movies comprising the current “Marvel Universe.” For these American-cinema primers we pop popcorn, settle into our preferred seats on the sofa and in the comfy chairs, and fuss good-naturedly about when to pause the action for an ice-cream break. These experiences have built for us a common vocabulary of characters and places, bits of dialogue and short arcs of storyline that we can share around the supper table and on our morning drives to school as live-action gifs exchanged without context: “1.21 gigawatts!” when expressing incredulityi … or “I’ve got a bad feeling about this!” when urging cautionii … or “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few … or the one,” when conceding a package’s last Oreo.iii This pandemic summer we added Netflix shows to our pop-culture classroom. -
EXPLODING STARS, DEAD DINOSAURS, and ZOMBIES Commitment in a Body Bag
1. Introduction: When Ministry Meets Science If the Internet is good for anything—besides streaming TV shows, movies, and music—it is lists. Top ten lists are every- where, and about everything. Recently I clicked on one (when, of course, I should have been doing something else): “Greatest Movie Rivals.” The list included Happy Gilmore vs. Shooter McGavin from Happy Gilmore, Woody vs. Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story, Daniel LaRusso vs. Johnny Lawrence from The Karate Kid (remember, “Sweep the leg, Johnny!” “Put him in a body bag!!”), Harry Potter vs. Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter, Neo vs. Agent Smith from The Matrix, Maverick vs. Iceman from Top Gun, and controversially, number one . (drum roll) . Rocky Balboa vs. Apollo Creed from Rocky. If you add sports rivals to your search you’ll find more lists with a heightened level of debate. The comment threads often convey that this rivalry is for keeps, as Michigan fans tell Ohio State fans to die a slow death. Rivalries seem an essential part of the human drama; a way we make sense of our world. We’ve been living with another rivalry that’s had a major impact on our ministry—the rivalry between faith and science. Some people have the perception that science is out to “sweep the leg” of faith, putting our young people’s Christian 4 EXPLODING STARS, DEAD DINOSAURS, AND ZOMBIES commitment in a body bag. Many of us respond by seeking to avoid the rivalry altogether, never creating space for our young people to discuss how scientific findings affect their faith. -
